Our Mission: Create leadership
development opportunities to
maximize the potential of our
members, sponsoring organizations,
the Savannah River Site, and the
surrounding communities.
Message from President – Giving Back to the Community
This quarter was all about giving back to our community. Our new Vice President of Outreach, Lydia Boynton, worked overtime this quarter!! Her teams successfully orchestrated two annual outreach events for the future leaders of our community. SRSLA sponsored two special awards, a student choice award as well as a leadership award (chosen by us) in the South Carolina Future City Competition for middle schoolers. We also successfully hosted our first virtual speech contest to include providing valuable practice sessions for the competitors via Zoom.

General Membership Meeting – What’s In It for
Me (NMA)
Stephen Bailey, the former NMA National
Executive Director gave a wonderful talk on
leadership according to Steve to a small but
enthusiastic group of members. He provided us
with his 9 points of leadership:
1. Integrity 2. Accountability 3. Empathy (every leader is a baggage
handler) 4. Humility 5. Vision – develop buy in 6. Resilience 7. Influence not inflame 8. Positivity 9. Empowerment
A couple of us wore our ugly sweaters, suites, and/or ties to celebrate the Christmas holidays. 3 ‐ $10 Starbucks Gift Cards were awarded.
January 2021 Future City Competition
SRSLA sponsored
two special awards
this year at the
2021 SC Regional
Future City
Competition. This
year’s project was
for the middle
school youth
teams to develop a
city on the moon which was sustainable due to
the lack of resources from the earth. SRLSA
judges chose New Ellenton Middle STEM
Magnet School for their city “The Skeld” for
excellence in planning for educational and
career development special award. We had to
evaluate answers on questions on what
leadership lessons they learned and challenges
they faced while designing their city. They
discussed the different phases of teambuilding
and importance of listening to others as a
leader ‐‐ what a great lesson learned for middle
schoolers!! The student choice award went to
McCracken Middle School for their sustainable
city on the moon “Eagleton.” The awards
ceremony was virtual and can be viewed at

General Membership Meeting ‐ Vision Boards
VP Professional
Development
Yolanda Pelzer
hosted two
professional
development
sessions on
Vision Board
development.
Our 1st meeting
SRLSA Newsletter 3 | P a g e
had 9 members and 5 guests. We watched a
couple of videos on Vision Board development
then Yolanda gave her PPT presentation. Vision
boards are a great way to visualize where you
want to go.
Two weeks later, we got to see some of the
vision boards that were created by our
members and guests. We watched a leadership
You‐Tube video by Simon Sinek and did an ice‐
breaker game called 2 truths and 1 lie where we
learned we had a USTA tennis player, pipe
fitter, twin, a Voice contestant and other
interesting facts about our audience. Yolanda
instructed us on the Vision Boards. Did you
complete your vision board?
February 2021
General Membership Meeting: Intentional
Leadership
Speaker Shayla Farmer
shared her leadership
experience and gave us
tips on how to be an
“Intentional Leader”.
Mrs. Farmer was an
energetic speaker and
presenter who has clear passion for people. Mrs.
Farmer is a Certified HR Professional and
Leadership Coach with over 18 years of HR
experience. She left us with 3 leadership points
in order to know yourself to lead yourself as an
intentional leader:
1. Decide who you are and what you stand for
2. Identify gaps 3. Commit to closing those gaps
Our door prize was a leadership book by
Brendan Buchard, “High Performance Habits”
which was won by one of our guests at the
meeting.
March 2021
Chapter Speech
Contest
We hosted our first
ever virtual speech contest. Hats off to Lydia
and her team (AD & Cheryl) bringing it all
together. Virtual practice sessions were held
with the students. Thanks goes out to the
Toastmasters Speak EZ Club who provided
judging as well as valuable feedback to our
contestant for future contests. Our winner is
going on to the next stage – Peachbelt contest.
We presented the winner, Asher Edgar, a check
for $300 and a certificate for his efforts.
General Membership Meeting
Our Speaker, author Kelly
Cornish, meeting gave us a
primer on diversity, equity
and inclusion. She is a senior
executive and head of
Diverse Segments,
Representation and Inclusion
at Wells Fargo. She provided
insights to her very diverse
background and leadership lessons she learned
as she progressed through her professional
development. She espoused these leadership
truths: when hiring, look who is not at the
table, share information between everyone and
above all influence the world by being true to
yourself but know
who you are and
speaking the truth to
power.
She is the co‐author
of “It’s Work, How
Will You Show Up?:
99 Tips, Turns, and
Lessons Learned.”
Five books were
raffled to our

offering to Mrs. Cornish’s husbands ministry at
the 2nd Providence Church for payment of
books.
