NAVARATHRI FESTIVAL The root words for Navarathri (as pronounced in Tamil) are the Sanskrit words of ‘Navam’ (meaning ‘9’) conjoined with ‘Rathri’ (meaning night). Navarathri literally means ‘the Nine auspicious Nights’. The number Nine is significant with Hindus as multiples of 9 equate infinity.

These 9 nights are in continuous celebration of the omnipotence of God through His various appearances in the 3 main feminine manifestations. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of the Divinity are worshipped. Hindus believe in one ultimate spiritual actuality which has no form. We believe in one omnipresent Deity but may worship Her/ Him in any of the numerous manifestations that are prevalent.

However to reach out to us, that Ultimate Spirituality manifests itself in different ways and in different forms or appearances. God as the embodiment of Mother Earth has 3 main feminine personifications-Parvathi, Lakshmi and Saraswathi. These 3 cardinal manifestations battle the Asura Mahisashura (a demon manifesting with a Bufffalo head) for 9 days. Parvathi, Lakshmi and Sarasvathi have many favourite names e.g. Durga, Meenakshi, Kali, Ambal, Abirami, Amman, Shakti etc. Each name has a parable behind it.

During these 9 nights, (Navarathri) the 1st 3 days are in celebration of the Durga (Parvathi) manifestation. The 4th to the 6th days are for Lakshmi and the last 3 days in celebration of the Saraswathi personification. The sum total of the celebration is the triumph of good over evil ending with the victory parade on Vijayadashami (Victory Day) on the 10th day. On the 10th day the Priests decorate a classic image manifestation for the congregation to centre their thoughts and worship the Divine Manifestation of the day. The victory parade is held on this 10th day with the Deity emerging victorious in all her divine glory which culminates with the release of an arrow from a bow to represent victory over evil. On this day the Deity is carried on a raised platform around the Temple precincts for Hindus to adore and pay obeisance.

Of particular significance to this Temple is that Navarathri is part and parcel of a series of events that culminate with the Fire Walking Festival on 20 October 2019.

On each day, special pujas (service) are performed and observed in the mornings and in the evenings. To mark these auspicious 9 days, on each evening, performers engage the congregation with traditional dance, hymns and other performances as well as feasting. Each and every day is made possible by the generous donation of well wishers and participants. May the grace of Sakti enlighten your path today and everyday.
