We come across a social problem. Informal settlement in Phnom Penh is being taken down as the government sells land to real estate developers. The communities are moved to relocation sites outside of the city.

Sra Pou relocation site in Udong, 50 km from Phnom Penh. The community that we are working with was relocated here from the centre of Phnom Penh with no infrastructure or houses in January 2010. They had to start everything from zero.

510 families were originally relocated to Sra Pou, but only about a half of them live there as the conditions are harsh. The main problem is work: most people have no jobs in the countryside. They need vocational training.

The community has decided to build a vocational school. It is needed especially for youngsters, so that they don’t end up jobless.

We get to know the community through aid professional Sous Sina (right). He has founded Blue Tent, a small aid organization, that only works to help this community. Sous Sina asks for our help in designing the vocational school and brings us to meet the community. He translates and helps with the communication.

We see the site for the vocational school, meet the community leader, take measures and get to know the village. Together with the villagers we list the professions that should be taught at the vocational school.

We interview the youngsters who would like to study and teach at the vocational school. Ten of them are sent to apprenticeships paid by Blue Tent in autumn 2010 so that they can come back to teach at the vocational school in spring 2011.

Also local handicraftsmen like this basket maker could teach the traditional skills of the region at the school. Here he shows us the baskets that are sold in Phnom Penh and make him a living. Wowen materials could be used for the building as well.

According to the teaching activites and other needs mentioned by the community leader, we put together a room program, which is then discussed and approved with the community.

ROOM PROGRAM

- Spaces for vocational training in: cosmetics hairdressing sewing machine sewing computer repair

motorcycle repair hadicrafts such as basketmaking building - Community room possibility for gathering, parties and afternoon school

- Lockable storages for classroom and workshop

- Toilets for men and women, in the back - Rainwater harvesting and good sunshading for all spaces

Written together with community leader Long Dara and Blue Tent and Kone Kmeng NGOs.

We also make a tour in a nearby towns to get a sense of local professions and ask for apprenticeship possibilities for local youngsters who could become teachers at the vocational school after getting training themselves.

Soil blocks have been used to replace factory-made bricks on a nearby construction site. We find out about the process to develop it further use it in our design.

We modify the composition by reducing cement and adding straw. Experiments still need to be made in scale 1:1 with the soil of the site.

Preliminary design for the first, narrow site is done. The site is almost too narrow for any building and it is located on backyards of private houses. But when we present the design to the commmunity, they like it.

Our design presents the idea of having an open community space next to the classrooms, which also functions as a shop to sell handicrafts to visitors. The community agrees that it is wise to have a shop attached to the vocational school to provide a place for students to sell their products.

After a couple of days, the site changes for better : we now have a building permission for a larger site outside of the current habitation. Taking new measures. Leaving Cambodia and continuing the design work in Finland.
