OVERVIEW

Sharjah Research Academy -SRA- was established in 2008 under the umbrella of the Ruler's Office of Sharjah as an initiative and innovation of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who believes in the massive resources the universities possess.

"We must move academic staff research outcomes from the shelves to the industry to be utilized and benefit all parties working towards sustainable development and community service."

The aim of the Sharjah Research Academy is, in cooperation with other Educational Institutes, to fulfill and accomplish this directive and the ambitions of academia. Also, as H.H. believes, Education and scientific research are fundamental pillars for the progress of a nation economically and socially.

Sharjah Research Academy exceptionally aims at serving the United Arab Emirates community through promoting knowledge and strengthening it through academic research. Further, Sharjah Research Academy seeks to spread knowledge and science through the dissemination of different research studies that are conducted and prepared by its staff or that are provided by other to it by other institutions. All such work is done by SRAto fulfill one of its major goals which is to contribute to the rebirth and elevation of the nation.

Sharjah Research Academy has been working to find ways to utilize the rich resources available to the academy and outsource them to the public and private sectors. Much of these efforts and agreements focus on improving communication and coordination between academia, public and private sector, local, state and federal agencies; and developing ways to bring together relevant expertise to enhance added value to projects and industries.

Despite significant development within the public, private and academic sectors, the sharing of expertise and genuine collaboration is yet to be accomplished.

The establishment of Memorandum of Understandings (MOU) between Sharjah Research Academy and different governmental and private sectors will combine the intelligent efforts of all participating agencies and seeks to greatly enhance the ability to add value to any agreed project and further utilize the resources of academia and serves the needs of community.

The World Architectural Congress /took place in Dubai from the 2nd till the 4th of October. The Event is organized by Cityscape global. Dr. Mufid Samarai participated in the round table discussions talking about the utilization of wood in structures.

The World Architectural congress is held annually at the early days of October. The only global architectural gathering in the region congress for 2012 in its 8th edition was held starting from 2nd of October till the 4th of October. In this edition, the goals were to examine and overcome the current challenges in the field of architecture, determine new standards in international best practice and provide applicable strategies to venture into emerging markets and design sectors. This years edition represented an all new and improved high-quality program. This program is led and developed for the first time by an expert advisory board, to equip you with the practical skills you need to advance your practice and stay ahead of the competition. This congress aims also to ensure that the attendance will hear from the industry leaders about the current challenges in the field of architecture, the new standards in international best practice and the latest innovative strategies for applying modern sustainable design techniques. Also, the congress aims to give the opportunity to extend the attendances business opportunities in this shifting market by networking with your key clients.

Dr. Mufid Samarai, Senior Advisor at Sharjah Research Academy participated in round table discussions. The key speaker presented an impressive paper on the utilization of wood in structures. He emphasized that wood is being used in its natural form in Norway. This is possible if the right type is used and in the right place and way. Although wood is one of the oldest known materials of construction and the only one that is naturally renewable. A number of factors-simplicity in fabrication; lightness; reusability; insulation from heat, sound, and electricity; esthetically pleasing appearance; resistance to oxidation, acid attack, and salt water; and environmental compatibility-have made this material one of the most popular in light construction. Many products made with wood as the principal raw material have been introduced into the construction market in the last twenty, however, generalizing its use in its natural form is not practical and far from being safe in our environment.

In hot and humid weather which we have in our region, lumber are also affected by the presence of defects (imperfections). Defects are natural irregularities in the structure of wood. The common defects are cracks, knots, and slope of grain, and occur principally during the growing period and the drying process. They lower the strength and durability of lumber, and should be taken into consideration in design as well as construction. Decay caused by fungi which attack the cellulose and lignin and causing the wood to rot . Several insects that attack wood such as termites, carpenter ants and powder beetles. Marine borers, wormlike species related to clams and oyster, they attack wood in fresh and salty water. All of these defects are more prominent in our environment and hence special precautions should be taken and the freedom of using wood in its natural form is neither safe nor recommended.

APPENDIX 5:STUDENTS EVALUATIONSSPECIALIZED TOPIC COURSE:Basic buffer making and Tissue culture maintenance

Q) What did you like best in this course?1. I loved the course it was an amazing experience, thanks for the great efforts.2. This course gave me an experience that will give me an edge later on during my medical residency. I loved that it was hands on and that we gained many skills.3.Getting the chance to learn new skills, competencies & knowledge required for future purpose was a joy for me and worth every second. Doctors responsible for this course are very enthusiastic & willing to teach us more & more.4.Everything!5.Number of students was appropriate, very good timing.6.Everything basically; most important is that we are all in need of such a course away from the theory part; our lab skills need to be improved.7.The interesting contents that I believe are important for medical students. The commitment of the instructors.8.Quite a comprehensive, stimulating course. It introduced some fundamental lab skills that have not been taught to us, the faculty was quite friendly, competent & enthusiastic.9.I liked the way it was organized (very well) how we were placed in groups. The sheets that were given to us to study from (lab safety, pipetting) were also helpful. The instructors were very supportive and patient, thank you.

Q) What areas of improvement do you suggest?

1. We want more of such courses that introduce students to the researching field, it would be really encouraging to have mo re courses at vacations. We want another one after fall semester please. 2. In this course, we only did cell culture. It would be amazing if these where different research courses example: pharmacology, molecular medicine & immunology.3.We can incorporate more devices & different skills in addition to the cell culture such as PCR and Immunofluorescence microscopy in the future.4.This course is essential for all medical students and should be included as compulsory course.5.Make it an official course with wider range of skills to be taught6.Cover more skills. More reading material required
