    INTRODUCTION

This bulletin provides instructions for installing Square DClipsal

Eight-Channel DIN-Rail Dimmers, which are C-Bus-controlledoutput units suitable for use with incandescent lighting or compatiblelow-voltage lighting. These dimmer units automatically compensatefor voltage and frequency fluctuations and employ advancedphase-control techniques to reduce flicker and increase lamp life.

Each dimmer channel can independently control loads of2 A @ 120 V AC. As part of a channel group (channels 14 or 58),a channel also can carry loads up to 3 A @ 120 V AC, so long asthe load rating per channel group is no greater than 8 A.

At 12M wide (1M = 0.69 in. [17.5 mm]), the dimmers are designedfor mounting in suitable DIN-style enclosures, such as the Clipsal36M enclosure. Built-in RJ-45 connectors enable quick connectionto the C-Bus network and interconnection of units. The units can beconfigured by using Learn mode or the C-Bus Toolkit software.

These dimmer units can be ordered with an internal C-Bus networkpower supply. When connected to an external power source, unitsincorporating the C-Bus power supply (catalog numberSLC5508TD2A) can support a number of other C-Bus units by

providing up to 200 mA to the network.

The standard dimmer units (catalog number SLC5508TD2AP) donot provide power to the network, even when they are connected toan external electrical power source.

    Before You Begin

Before installing an eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer, verify that yourorder is complete by comparing the contents of the package with theappropriate items in the table below. Also verify that the catalog

    COMPONENTS AND OPERATION

This section provides a detailed summary of the eight-channel DIN-rail dimmers capabilities.

    Micro-Controller

The eight-channel DIN-rail dimmers micro-controller has a numberof specialized controls.

    Soft Turn ON and OFF

Unlike conventional devices, where abrupt changes in brightnessoccur whenever a channel is switched ON or OFF, the

eight-channel DIN-rail dimmers micro-controller controls the rate ofbrightness change. This results in a soft brightness change that isreferred to as Soft Turn ON and Soft Turn OFF. This feature helpsto prolong the life of incandescent lamp filaments.

    Linearized Brightness Control

In conventional phase-control dimmers, as the light is beingdimmed, the rate of change of power delivered to the load is notlinear. The result is a change in brightness that is more apparentwhen the brightness of the light is at lower settings. The micro-controller in the eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer uses an algorithm toensure that this change in brightness is uniform throughout thecontrol range.

    Automatic Line-Frequency Adjustment

The eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer constantly tracks the power-source frequency. Whenever a frequency shift is detected, themicro-controller automatically adjusts the dimmer to ensuresynchronization. The DIN-rail dimmer will operate over a wide rangeof frequencies, provided that the drift rate is less than 3 Hz perminute or a step change of less than 0.1 Hz.

    Flicker-Reduction Filter

Lighting flicker is reduced and lamp-life is increased by a filter thattracks the frequency of the incoming electricity and attenuates theharmonics of the fundamental frequency.

    Thermal Shutdown

An internal temperature sensor helps protect the unit fromoverheating by monitoring the units internal operating temperature. In the event there is an over-temperature condition, meaning thetemperature has exceeded approximately 158F (70C), allchannels will turn off (i.e., a thermal shutdown will occur). Hightemperatures are most likely to occur when the dimmer unit isoperating under heavy load conditions and there is insufficient airventilation.

In the event of a thermal shutdown, channel levels will beautomatically restored after the over-temperature condition hasbeen resolved and the unit has cooled.

    Overrides

The eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer offers Local Override andRemote Override options (see figure DIN-Rail Dimmer OverrideOptions).

    Local Override/Channel Control Buttons

Eight Local Override/Channel Control buttons on the front of the unit

provide a temporary way to change the state of each channel at theunit (this change is often referred to as "toggling" the channel or unit"locally"). Each button will light when its respective channel is ON.

By default, the Local Override buttons work opposite and inconjunction with C-Bus input units, with the most recent commandtaking precedence (see NOTE below). For example, if a keypadbutton is ON, pressing the Local Override button for that samechannel will turn OFF the keypad button and the channel. At thesame time, the Unit status indicator will start to flash. Flashing willcontinue until the Local Override has been turned off, either by

giving the same Local Override button a "Double Press" or bypressing a key on the affected input unit. See the table, "Operationof the Local Override Buttons," for an operational summary.

NOTE: By default, C-Bus commands will "override" changes to theoperating state that have been made by pressing the Local Overridebuttons. The C-Bus command override can be disabled by using theC-Bus Toolkit software. For more information about commandprecedence, see the section "Operating Mode Priorities."

Double press (two short presses within 2seconds)

When a channel or unit is in Local Override mode, a doublepress on the Local Override button will return it to control by theC-Bus network

Long press (a press longer than 2seconds on any Local Override button)

When one or more channels or units are in Local Override mode,a long press will return them ALL to control by the C-Bus

    network

    Remote Overrides

The eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer has provisions for connectingtwo remote switches that provide Remote Override ON and OFFfunctions. The remote inputs are activated when the switchmechanism contact closes.

NOTE: External voltage sources are not required and MUST NOTbe connected to either of the dimmer's Remote Override inputs.

Activation of a remote override input sets all dimmer channels eitherON or OFF accordingly. Remote OFF has priority if Remote ON andRemote OFF functions are activated simultaneously (see the table

    Operating Mode Hierarchy).

The remote switches can be located up to 3280 ft (1000 m) from thedimmer unit. Multiple switches can be connected in parallel to thesame remote input, allowing remote control of the dimmer fromdifferent locations by using any type of cable (for wiring examples, see section Remote Override Connections). Similarly, a singleswitch can be used to remotely control up to 30 differentDIN-rail dimmers within the same C-Bus network.

NOTE: C-Bus is a balanced network, so C-Bus positive (+) must be

present at any point where C-Bus negative () is taken. Thereforeboth network conductors [C-Bus positive (+) and C-Busnegative ()] must be looped through all Remote Override inputswitches on the network.

    Status Indicators

On the front of the eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer are two sets ofstatus indicators: the Unit and C-Bus status indicator LEDs and theeight illuminated Local Override (Channel Control) buttons (see

    Power-Up Load Status

All C-Bus units have onboard non-volatile memory that stores theoperating state of the unit in the event of a power outage. Whenpower is restored, the unit will carry out a diagnostic for about fiveseconds. The dimmer loads will remain OFF while the unit restoresthe channels to their previous states, according to the unitsrecovery settings. The load status will be displayed on the channels'status indicator LEDs.

    Eight-Channel DIN-Rail Dimmer Compatibilities

The DIN-rail dimmers can dim the following types of lighting loads.

Resistive loads such as incandescent lighting and halogen110120 V lamps

Inductive loads such as iron-core transformers for low-voltagelighting

Loads compatible with phase control, such as low-voltagelighting with electronic transformers. The number of electronictransformer loads that can be connected to a channel dependson the transformer model that is used. Limit the capacitance to300 nF per output channel

connected to a channel depends on the transformermodel that is used. Limit the capacitance to 300 nF peroutput channel.

    Standalone Configuration

The eight-channel DIN-Rail dimmer draws 18 mA from the C-Busnetwork when it is not connected to an external power source. This18 mA makes it possible to configure the unit without a connectionto an external power source.

Requirements for configuring a unit without using an external powersource include connection to an operational C-Bus network that iscapable of supporting one or more extra C-Bus units (18 mA current

required per dimmer). For more information about configurationrequirements, see "Configuration" in the "Installation" section.

    C-Bus System Clock

Eight-channel DIN-rail dimmers incorporate a software-selectableC-Bus System Clock, which synchronizes data communicationswaveforms on the C-Bus network. Typically the clock is disabled:Only one active clock is required for successful C-Bus networkcommunications, and a maximum of three C-Bus units per network

should have the clock circuitry enabled. If a system clock is required, it can be enabled through the C-BusToolkit software.

    Network Burden

DIN-rail dimmers incorporate a software-selectable network burdenthat can be enabled in the event the network does not yet have aburden. One hardware or software network burden is required fornetwork termination and biasing, but only one network burden

should be installed per network. To determine if one must beinstalled for a network, consult the C-Bus Toolkit software.

To enable the software-selectable network burden, use the C-BusToolkit software to set the unit address to 001.

    INSTALLATION

Follow the procedures in this section to mount the eight-channelDIN-rail dimmer units and to make electrical and C-Bus networkwiring connections.

    Network Considerations

Determine the total network current load and verify that there will beadequate C-Bus power to support all the connected devices. Alsoverify that the amount of available power is no more than 2 A.Generally, one physical C-Bus network can have a maximum of 10DIN-rail units that incorporate a C-Bus power supply or 100

DIN-Rail units that do not. However, these limits will be affected bythe design of the network, including the specific number and typesof units on it.

The eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer units draw 18 mA from theC-Bus network when they do not have an external electrical powersource. When the units have external power, they draw no currentfrom the C-Bus network. Additionally, when connected to anexternal power source, dimmer units that incorporate a C-Busnetwork power supply can provide up to 200 mA to the C-Bus

network. Before an eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer can operate on the C-Busnetwork, the C-Bus Toolkit software must be used to assign aunique identification (unit address) and mode of operation on thenetwork. When the units are being installed as part of a large orcomplex network, it is most efficient to perform the basicconfiguration before the units are physically installed. However, theunits can be configured before or after physical installation.

    Prerequisites

The following components are typically required to configure aneight-channel DIN-rail dimmer unit. (Specific items and productnumbers can vary according to the network and type of C-Bus unit.)

Identifying the C-Bus Units and Their Locations

The location of each C-Bus unit must be tracked. Two

recommended methods are given below, one for when the units areconfigured before installation (see section Labeling the C-BusUnits), the other for when the units are configured after installation(see section Recording Each Units Location).

    Labeling the C-Bus Units

When C-Bus units are configured before physical installation, it isimportant to label them to indicate where they are to be placed. Onemethod for doing this would be to write each units address directlyon it.

NOTE: Verify that each configured unit has been marked to indicatewhere it should be placed in an enclosure or a building or site.

    Recording Each Unit's Location

In order to track C-Bus units that will be configured after physicalinstallation, they must be identified and their location must berecorded at the time they are installed.

NOTE: If a unit has already been configured and assigned alocation on a site map, it is not necessary to make another record ofits location.

HAZARD OF UNEXPECTED OR IMPROPER SYSTEM BEHAVIOR

Properly record the physical location of each unit using the lift-and-peel label provided on the box and a site plan or location

    log.

Retain location records and provide them to the person(s)responsible for configuring and commissioning the network.

Failure to follow these instructions can result in unexpected orimproper system behavior.

Before installing a unit, use the following guidelines to record itslocation. Recording each unit's location is required for configurationwith the C-Bus Toolkit software.

Each unit is identified by a unique serial number found on the boxlabel (see the figure Box Label with Lift-and-Peel Section). Theserial number provides important information for recording a unit's

    location.

Figure 3: Box Label with Lift-and-Peel Section

    KEY:

    A. Serial number

    B. Bar code

    C. Lift-and-peel section

The box label also has a bar code that can be read by an infraredscanner and used for a record of a specific units location. A lift-and-peel section of the box label duplicates the box labelsinformation (see Box Label with Lift-and-Peel Section diagram).

To record the location of a unit, remove the lift-and-peel sectionfrom the box label and attach it to a site plan or other document. The lift-and-peel section now provides a record of the physicallocation where that unit is installed. When installing multiple units ofone kind in an area or enclosure, such as six four-channel DINdimmers in an enclosure, verify that the document or site planindicates the relative position of each specific unit.

    Wiring Guidelines

Follow the guidelines below when working with DIN-rail dimmers. The unit can handle up to eight channels of dimmed loadsconnected according to the guidelines below. Consider the totalcurrent consumption when designing the power feed and selectingthe cables. Also verify that the load supply has been protected by anappropriately rated circuit breaker.

Verify that the power supplying the system is turned OFF beforehandling electrical power conductors.

Each dimmer channel can independently control loads of2 A @ 120 V AC.

Additionally, the eight channels are split into two groups, channels 14 and channels 58.

Any channel in a group can carry loads up to 3 A @ 120 V AC,so long as the total load rating per channel group is no greaterthan 8 A.

Observe national and local electrical codes. Follow the wiring diagram shown in the figure "Electrical Wiring

Connections for the Eight-Channel DIN-Rail Dimmer.

Use copper wire only, one #12 or two #1416 AWG(3.1 mm1.3 mm). Verify the number and types of units that can be connected to

this network (see section Network Considerations).

Insert the rubber terminal plugs into any unused RJ-45 ports toprevent wire cuttings and other debris from entering the unit.

The recommended torque for tightening the line- andload-voltage terminal screws is 5 lb-inch (0.56 Nm). Do notexceed this torque.

Verify that electrical power conductors are separated from theC-Bus network cable and all other Class 2 conductors: Route thewiring to maintain a minimum separation or separate the wiresby barriers. Consult your electrical code for local requirements.

Verify that incoming electrical power lines are held in placeaccording to local regulations, for example, using cable ties toattach power lines to an enclosure.

Connecting the Dimmer to the C-Bus Network

The eight-channel DIN-rail dimmer unit is connected to the C-Busnetwork through one of the RJ-45 sockets (see the figureConnecting to the C-Bus Network). Use Category 5 unshieldedtwisted pair (UTP) data cable and an appropriately wired RJ-45connector to make the connection (see figure C-Bus WiringConnections and table C-Bus Cable Conductor Assignments).

NOTE: The C-Bus connection is polarity sensitive.

    Remote Override Connections

The C-Bus connectors have extra pairs of conductors (see thefigure C-Bus Wiring Connections and the table C-Bus CableConductor Assignments) that can be used to enable RemoteOverrides (ON/OFF) that will operate without using the C-Busnetwork, as is discussed in the section Remote Overrides. TheRemote Override connections are optional, but it is recommendedthat they be maintained for correct operation of these servicesacross the C-Bus network. The Remote Override (ON/OFF)services can be disabled by using the C-Bus Toolkit software.

NOTE: C-Bus is a balanced network, so C-Bus positive (+) must bepresent at any point where C-Bus negative () is taken. Therefore

both network conductors [C-Bus positive (+) and C-Bus negative()] must be looped through all Remote Override input switches onthe network.

The figure "Wiring for Remote Overrides" shows how one or moreswitches can be connected in parallel on any one network. Ifconnecting a Remote ON switch, use the green and greenwhiteconductors; if connecting a Remote OFF switch, use the brown andbrownwhite conductors. Remote Overrides are triggered byconnecting the relevant conductors to C-Bus negative (see the tableC-Bus Cable Conductor Assignments).

    MeggerTesting Guidelines

Do not Megger test C-Bus data cabling or terminals. Meggertesting of data cabling or terminals can degrade the performance ofthe C-Bus network.

It will not harm the C-Bus units if electrical power terminals only areMegger

tested. But because C-Bus units contain electronic

components, the Megger readings will not be correct. To obtainvalid readings, disconnect the power lines from the C-Bus units.

HAZARD OF C-BUS NETWORK PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION

Do not Megger test C-Bus data cabling or terminals as it can degrade theperformance of the C-Bus network.

Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the C-Bus network.
