6 OFFICIAL SQUAMISH ADVENTURE GUIDE
100 Years of SquamishSquamish has a lot to celebrate this year.
It has been 100 years since the name
“Squamish” was adopted and since the
original townsite, today’s downtown area,
was completed. 1914 was a big year for
Squamish, and 2014 is even bigger! Join us
this year for one, or several, of our events as
we celebrate 100 years of Squamish!
Human HistoryAs long as 5,000 years ago descendants of
the Sko-mish, or Squamish people, arrived
at the Howe Sound. For thousands of years
the Squamish Nation has called Squamish
home, as this land provided a lush Valley for
their families to hunt, trap and fish.

West Coast Railway Heritage ParkHome of the Royal Hudson, the West Coast Railway Heritage Park takes you on a trip
back in time. The “Train Museum” as the kids call it, offers an interactive glimpse at
Canada’s railway history. Take a ride on the Miniature Railway and walk through the
park’s many exhibits. Some of the older exhibits are housed in the CN Roundhouse
and Conference Centre. The park is open to the public year-round. www.wcra.org

Britannia Mine Museum
The perfect stop between Vancouver and
Whistler to step back in time to learn what
life was like when Britannia was a mining
town, and as one of the British Empire’s top
producing copper mines. Now 110 years
later, the National Historic Site features fun,
modern and historical exhibits, the awe-
inspiring 20-storey Mill building, as well as
the memorable underground train and gold
panning area. www.britanniaminemuseum.com

SQUAMISH IS LOCATED IN PRIME WILDLIFE HABITAT. From the wintering bald eagles and running salmon, to chipmunks, coyotes and bears, we share this area with all sorts of wildlife.
EaglesBetween November and January each
year, Squamish hosts one of the largest
congregations of wintering bald eagles in
North America.
Bear AwareBlack bears can be black, brown, blonde or
cinnamon. These stunning animals are born
wild and wary of humans. Seeing a bear
in its natural habitat can be a memorable
experience, but please keep our bears wild
by following these simple steps:
» stay calm and do not run
» never turn your back on wildlife
» back away and give the bear space
» talk calmly
» avoid eye contact
» have deterrent ready
» do not attract or feed wildlife

AMOLA SALT MOUNTAIN MUSHROOM SALT
One of BC’s great treasures is the abundance of exotic wild mushrooms
that grow in our temperate rainforests. This salt combines the delicate
fl avours of wild chanterelles and lobster mushrooms to infuse this salt
with the fl avours of the forest. Perfect for mushroom dishes, eggs, or on
top of any cheesy goodness. A true West Coast specialty!
Available at On the Farm Country Market

Eagle Viewing & Floats Squamish plays host to one of the largest
congregations of wintering bald eagles in
North America between the months of
November and January. There are two ways
to view them, from land or on the water. If
land is your choice, be sure to stop by the
“Eagle Run Park” viewing facility located on
the municipal dyke in Brackendale. If you
want to take in the action by water go on a
float trip and view the regal eagles in their
natural environment.
Snowshoeing The scenic alpine terrain throughout
Squamish provides a winter wonderland for
snowshoers. New for this year, the Sea to
Sky Gondola is offering 5 marked snowshoe
trails and equipment rentals.
Backcountry Skiing & Snowboarding The Squamish area offers extraordinary
backcountry mountain experiences with
ancient forests, alpine huts and deep
powder. A popular local ski touring area
is Paul Ridge near Red Heather Shelter in
Garibaldi Provincial Park.
Nordic Skiing From treks through ungroomed routes
by frozen waterfalls and cedar groves, to
the world-class Nordic facilities in the
Callaghan Valley, you will find a cross-
country skiing experience for every level
and every skier.
SnowmobilingSquamish is the perfect home base for a
snowmobiling vacation offering access to
the best snowmobiling terrain in South
Western BC. All of the major trailheads
offer mountain access and are within a
30 to 60 minute drive. A local favourite is
the Brohm Ridge area located 10 minutes
north of Squamish.
