• Read an existing data set– Action buttons: Open data document button– Menu: File → Open → Data

• Entering data – Menu: File → New → Data

• Select a subset of the data– Action buttons: Select cases button– Menu: File → Data → Select cases

Additional hints on data management

• Defining variable labels– VARIABLE LABELS varname ‘variable label’.

• Define variable level of measurement– VARIABLE LEVEL varname (NOMINAL).

• Define values for code-set– VALUE LABELS varname 1 ‘label1’ 2 ‘label2’ ...

Merging datasets

• Add new variables or add new cases• Both datasets must be open at the same time• Select one dataset to be the “master”

– The second dataset will be the source of the new cases or new variables

• BOTH datasets must have the same unique case (or record) identifier.
