General Description The Series TY-B, 5.6 K-factor, Horizon- tal and Vertical Sidewall Sprinklers de- scribed in this data sheet are standard response - standard coverage, deco- rative 5 mm glass bulb type spray sprinklers designed for use in light and ordinary hazard, commercial occupan- cies such as banks, hotels, shopping malls, etc. They are designed for instal- lation along a wall or the side of a beam and just beneath a smooth ceiling. Sidewall sprinklers are commonly used instead of pendent or upright sprinklers due to aesthetics or building construction considerations, where piping across the ceiling is not desir- able. The recessed version of the Series TY-B Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler is intended for use in areas with a fin- ished wall. It uses a two-piece Style 10 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 3/4 inch (19,1 mm) of total adjustment from the flush sidewall position. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the fixed pipe nipples to the sprinklers must be cut. Corrosion resistant coatings, where applicable, are utilized to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be ob- tained when exposed to corrosive at- mospheres. Although corrosion resis- tant coated sprinklers have passed the standard corrosion tests of the appli- cable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible cor- rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of these coatings for any given corro- sive environment. The effects of ambi- ent temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be considered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. WARNINGS The Series TY-B Sprinklers described herein must be installed and main- tained in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these de- vices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. DesignCriteriaThe Series TY-B Horizontal and Verti-cal Sidewall Sprinklers are intendedfor fire protection systems designed inaccordance with the standard installa-tion rules recognized by the applicableListing or Approval agency (e.g., ULListing is based on the requirements ofNFPA 13, and FM Approval is basedon the requirements of FM’s Loss Pre-vention Data Sheets). Only the Style10 Recessed Escutcheon is to be usedfor recessed horizontal installations.

InstallationThe Series TY-B Sprinklers must beinstalled in accordance with the follow-ing instructions:

NOTESDo not install any bulb type sprinkler ifthe bulb is cracked or there is a loss ofliquid from the bulb. With the sprinklerheld horizontally, a small air bubbleshould be present. The diameter of theair bubble is approximately 1/16 inch(1,6 mm) for the 135°F/57°C to 3/32inch (2,4 mm) for the 360°F/182°Ctemperature ratings.

A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained with a torque of 7to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi-mum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torquemay be used to install sprinklers with1/2 NPT connections. Higher levels oftorque may distort the sprinkler inletand cause leakage or impairment ofthe sprinkler.

Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi-cient adjustment in the escutcheonplate by under- or over-tightening thesprinkler. Readjust the position of thesprinkler fitting to suit.

The Series TY-B Horizontal and Ver-tical Sidewall Sprinklers must be in-stalled in accordance with the follow-ing instructions.

Step 1. Horizontal sidewall sprinklersare to be installed in the horizontalposition with their centerline of water-way perpendicular to the back wall andparallel to the ceiling. The word “TOP”on the Deflector is to face towards theceiling.

Vertical sidewall sprinklers are to beinstalled in the pendent or upright po-sition with the arrow on the Deflectorpointing away from the wall.

Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the pipe threads, hand tightenthe sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.

Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type6 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 4),except that an 8 or 10 inch adjustableCrescent wrench is to be used for waxcoated sprinklers. With reference toFigure 1 or 2, the W-Type 6 SprinklerWrench or the Crescent wrench, asapplicable, is to be applied to thewrench flats.

When installing wax coated sprinklerswith the adjustable Crescent wrench, additional care needs to be exercisedto prevent damage to the wax coatingon the sprinkler wrench flats or framearms and, consequently, exposure of

bare metal to the corrosive environ-ment. The jaws of the wrench shouldbe opened sufficiently wide to passover the wrench flats without damag-ing the wax coating. Before wrenchtightening the sprinkler, the jaws of thewrench are to be adjusted to just con-tact the sprinkler wrench flats. Afterwrench tightening the sprinkler, loosenthe wrench jaws before removing thewrench.

After installation, the sprinkler wrenchflats and frame arms must be in-spected and the wax coating re-touched (repaired) whenever the coat-ing has been damaged and bare metal

is exposed. The wax coating on thewrench flats can be retouched by gen-tly applying a heated 1/8 inch diametersteel rod to the areas of wax that havebeen damaged, to smooth it back overareas where bare metal is exposed.

NOTESOnly retouching of the wax coating ap-plied to the wrench flats and framearms is permitted, and the retouchingis to be performed only at the time ofthe initial sprinkler installation.

The steel rod should be heated only tothe point at which it can begin to meltthe wax, and appropriate precautionsneed to be taken, when handling theheated rod, in order to prevent theinstaller from being burned.

If attempts to retouch the wax coatingwith complete coverage are unsuc-cessful, additional wax can be orderedin the form of a wax stick (the end ofwhich is color coded). Only the correctcolor coded wax is to be used, andretouching of wrench flats and framearms is only permitted at the time ofinitial sprinkler installation. With thesteel rod heated as previously de-scribed, touch the rod to the area re-quiring additional wax with the rod an-gled downward, and then touch thewax stick to the rod approximatelyone-half inch away from the area re-quiring retouching. The wax will meltand run down onto the sprinkler.

The Series TY-B Recessed Horizon-tal Sidewall Sprinklers must be in-stalled in accordance with the follow-ing instructions.

Step A. Recessed horizontal sidewallsprinklers are to be installed in thehorizontal position with their centerlineof waterway perpendicular to the backwall and parallel to the ceiling. Theword “TOP” on the Deflector is to facetowards the ceiling.

Step B. After installing the Style 10Mounting Plate over the sprinklerthreads, hand tighten the sprinkler intothe sprinkler fitting.

Step C. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Ref.Figure 5). With reference to Figure 1,the W-Type 7 Recessed SprinklerWrench is to be applied to the sprinklerwrench flats.

Step D. After the ceiling has been in-stalled or the finish coat has been ap-plied, slide on the Style 10 Closureover the Series TY-B Sprinkler andpush the Closure over the MountingPlate until its flange comes in contactwith the ceiling.

Care andMaintenanceThe Series TY-B Sprinklers must bemaintained and serviced in accord-ance with the following instructions:

NOTESBefore closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenancework on the fire protection system thatit controls, permission to shut down theaffected fire protection system must beobtained from the proper authoritiesand all personnel who may be affectedby this action must be notified.

Absence of an escutcheon, which isused to cover a clearance hole, maydelay the time to sprinkler operation ina fire situation.

Sprinklers that are found to be leakingor exhibiting visible signs of corrosionmust be replaced.

Automatic sprinklers must never be bepainted, plated, coated or otherwisealtered after leaving the factory. Modi-fied sprinklers must be replaced.Sprinklers that have been exposed to

corrosive products of combustion, buthave not operated, should be replacedif they cannot be completely cleanedby wiping the sprinkler with a cloth orby brushing it with a soft bristle brush.

Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam-aged by dropping, striking, wrenchtwist/slippage, or the like, must be re-placed. Also, replace any sprinkler thathas a cracked bulb or that has lostliquid from its bulb. (Ref. InstallationSection).

Frequent visual inspections are rec-ommended to be initially performed forcorrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com-pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor-rosion resistant coating. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25should suffice; however, instead of in-specting from the floor level, a randomsampling of close-up visual inspec-tions should be made, so as to betterdetermine the exact sprinkler condi-tion and the long term integrity of thecorrosion resistant coating, as it maybe affected by the corrosive conditionspresent.
