Since it was founded in early 2005, The Chicago Mosaic School has become the center of education for Mosaic Arts in the United States. As the first and only school of its kind, CMS provides opportunities for artists interested in the serious study with an academic, materially-oriented approach to art education in the World Master tradition. CMS gives artists, teachers, and enthusiasts a place to explore all facets of mosaics—from classical reproduction to contemporary abstraction. CMS hosts some of the worlds most influential mosaic instructors. The school is committed to providing an inspirational and creative environment within our wonderful 7500+ square arts facility which houses classrooms, artist studios, library and conference room, student lounge and The Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics. The Chicago Mosaic School serves as an educational source for lectures, tours, demonstrations and presentations from local, national and international artists. We invite you into a thriving creative community that can offer you a mosaic art education like nowhere else in the world.

COMMUNITY OUTREACHCMS is active in bringing the art form of mosaic into schools, community centers, public parks, and playgrounds throughout Chicago and the surrounding areas. CMS preserves and promotes mosaic art through school programs, like After School Matters, community partnerships, and teacher training programs. Our trained instructors are uniquely experienced in working with diverse populations of all ages. The Chicago Mosaic School has built relationships with art schools and universities like Columbia College, Northeastern University and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2012, CMS partnered with the Art Institute of Chicago to create a video about the ancient mosaic making process and art techniques as it relates to their ancient art collection and the mosaic “ Man Leading a Giraffe” (fifth century CE). CMS strives to create durable, sustainable mosaics that will withstand the elements in all climates and offers consultations with organizations to create well made works. CMS is supported in part by grants, donations, CMS Members and Sponsors and people like you.

GoCMThe Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics is permanently housed within the CMS and is Chicago’s only space dedicated to showcasing local, national, and international mosaic art exhibitions year round. Visit www.chicagomosaicschool.com for upcoming shows and updates.

The ChicagoMosaic School10 Year MilestoneThis year CMS celebrates the 10 years as the first center for Mosaic Arts education in the Unites States. We will be honoring our students, faculty, artists and the multitudes of contributers with several special events in 2015.

We are extraordinarily proud to have the support and guidance of world-renowned artist, Verdiano Marzi of San Marino and France. CMS is partnering with The Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago to bring Maestro Verdiano Marzi’s work to the United States for his first solo exhibition, April 3-July, 2015. Verdiano will be exhibiting his most recent work, including mosaics, sculptures and drawings

Please join CMS in welcoming Maestro Marzi for the reception and opening on April 10. Enjoy performances by dancer, Guilloume Marzi and musician, Luke MacRoberts. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see his work in Chicago.

Additionally in March 13-April 24, 2015 we pay tribute to our students and Maestro Marzi with an international exhibition at The Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics. The show will feature the works of over 20 artists who have been transformed by the school and the teacher.

In May-June 2015 we are proud to be exhibiting the mosaics, drawings and prints of Australian artist Pamela Irving who will be showing for the first time in the United States at The Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics.

Visit www.chicagomosaicschool.com for other special anniverary events, dates and specifics.

Visiting artists Seminars

Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced –Monochromatic with Toyoharu KiiCMS is happy to welcome back renowned Japanese Maestro Toyoharu Kii to The Chicago Mosaic School. In this 5-day workshop, Kii will teach students “How do you express the feeling of something with one color? To make a monochromatic mosaic, one must think about what is the originality of mosaic.” A limited palette can provide the artist ample opportunities to discover movement and expression, texture and content. Kii will lead students first by creating designs using Chinese ink and Japanese paper. After the design is completed, participants will cover the design with a type of plastic sheet and create the mosaic directly on that sheet using cement mortal. Students will have access to the vast CMS smalti inventory to create their workshop piece. This is a rare opportunity to work with this contemporary master, space is limited. Workshop includes all materials, use of tools, and any handouts or supplemental materials. $675

Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced –PICASSIETTE with PAMELA IRVING: STORYTELLING IN MOSAICSTelling a story through objects and images is the focus of this exclusive workshop with Australian Artist Pamela Irving. She is well known throughout the world for creating works that are full of color and character, whimsy and subversion. Her large scale installations can be seen around the city of Melbourne, most notably at Luna Park

and Patterson Station (an international mosaic mural collaboration which she facilitated over several years). Pamela’s use of materials–broken china, found objects, and ceramic shards shows her unique approach to mosaic art. CMS is excited to bring Pamela to Chicago for this 4-day workshop that will be both inspiring and informative. Students will create a narrative figure using broken (or unbroken) china, shards and objects that may have a personal connection to themselves or or someone else. Participants will learn how to design and build up forms, cut and apply different materials, and find ways to tell their story through mosaics. Pamela will lecture and discuss the intrinsic nature of objects and material culture. This workshop is open to all students beginning through advanced. This workshop includes use of tools and access to the wonderful inventory of materials at the school. For this workshop, participants are asked to bring some materials with personal meaning to include in their work. $600

Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced –Wet Carved Concrete Workshop with Elder G. JonesArtist Elder Jones returns to The Chicago Mosaic School to teach the Carved Concrete technique–a process that was used by artisans early last century to make architectural elements. Carving wet concrete is a method of sculpting that produces a durable piece of art. How? The sand and cement mixture sits in a form until stiff and then the slowly hardening material is shaped by slicing and scraping. No power tools or hammer and chisel are required. This is an excellent method for producing sculptural forms that can be used for 3D mosaic work. Individuals will be able to make a small sculpture or planter about the size of a five gallon bucket. Each student will keep their (roughly forty pound) sturdy, weather tolerant creation. Carving tools will be provided to participants and materials will be included in the cost of the class. $375

Intermediate/Advanced –Smalti dimensions with Sue GiannottiExpand your smalti experience and explore the use of large scale tesserae. Join St. Louis artist, Sue Giannotti, in this 4-day workshop that focuses on the smalti techniques often seen in contemporary European mosaics: chunky textural B-cuts, andamento alternatives, and color and value techniques–all designed for added impact. While easily used in landscapes and abstract art, these skills can be helpful in any type of mosaic. Using smalti from our huge inventory of Orsoni and Dona glass, the class will go beyond the small brick-shaped cuts to explore the larger scale cuts and study why, when and how to incorporate both sizes into a mosaic. Students will learn to how to use the hammer and hardie to manipulate larger pieces of smalti for texture and interesting andamento options. Students should bring a sketchbook and between 4 and 6 design inspirations (photos, sketches; recommended size 8” x 10”) as starting points for their mosaic. Workshop includes materials and the use of tools. Class size is limited to 10 students. $495
