Last winter, Lisa and Marty Barnfield could not believe it when they learned they would be having not one, not two, but three babies. They were surprised and nervous, but above all, they felt blessed.

However, in June 2012, doctors informed them that the babies would arrive early but were too tiny to be delivered in their small hometown of Puxico, Missouri. Lisa was taken by ambulance to SSM St. Mary’s Health Center in St. Louis. Five days later, on June 20, Alec, Brody and Cale – their “ABC” babies – were born at just 24 weeks, weighing 1.5 pounds each. The newborns were transported to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, while Lisa remained at St. Mary’s in critical condition.

Sadly, just four days after he was born, their son Cale passed away. The Barnfields traveled to Puxico for his funeral but had to return to St. Louis shortly after since the other two babies were still in the NICU. On her drive back to be with Alec and Brody, Lisa learned there was a room open at the Ronald McDonald House, where she could stay just two blocks from the hospital.

“Marty and I felt so fortunate to have the RMH available to us,” says Lisa. “There is no other way we would have been able to afford to stay with our boys every day. Having a warm bed to go home to each evening was such a relief.”

Unfortunately, Marty could not stay with her, as he had to continue working in

Puxico. As months passed and the babies remained in the NICU, Lisa also had to return to work. So in August 2012, her parents, Larry and Shirley Crank, also from Puxico, moved into the RMH without hesitation. For the next five

months, our House became their home Sunday through Friday, when Lisa and Marty could travel to St. Louis for the weekend.

“I have no idea what we would have done without the Ronald McDonald House,” said Shirley during her stay. “People who didn’t know us four months ago are now taking care of us every day.”

Nearly a year has passed since the boys were born. They have overcome countless challenges, including months on a ventilator and several surgeries. But after a few bumps in the road during December, the Barnfields and Cranks received the greatest gift of all: both boys were released from the hospital.

“We truly believe these babies are miracles, and we feel so blessed to finally have them both home,” says Lisa.

SO, WHeN I AGReeD two years ago to get in line to potentially assume this new role with this wonderful organization, I thought, “This is great timing. All the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are up and running; we will have just opened an amazing new house on the campus of Mercy Hospital in West County, which was completely funded by a capital campaign that was a huge success due to so many kind and generous people, so I will be able to put it on ‘cruise control’ for my two year term!”

I should’ve known better — having been around Dan and the incredible staff at Ronald McDonald House Charities® for the better part of 10 years, I’ve seen the addition of eight apartments, three Family Rooms, and one House. And now, in partnership with eye Care Charity of Mid-America, we are on the verge of launching the first Ronald McDonald Care Mobile in St. Louis! This mobile eye care facility will be provide check-ups and eyeglasses to children in and around the St. Louis area, and is set to be rolled out (literally!) in the next month or so.

In addition, the staff and volunteers are getting ready to embark on a major rehabilitation project at our West Pine House. Long overdue, we will be shutting down the House for about four or five months so we can completely update the heating and cooling systems, expand and update the kitchen and family dining facilities and

common areas, and update the furniture and décor throughout.But, let’s not stop there… we hope to be doing the same to the Park Avenue House in the next year or two. And, I’m sure our team will

figure out another three or four major projects to undertake, as well!The best part about all of this activity is that it genuinely drives to the core of our mission of helping families in need. And, because of all

this growth, Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis now touches so many more families, both from outside of St. Louis, as we have always done with our homes away from home for those with seriously ill children, but now with the Family Rooms and Care Mobile, we are also helping children and families in our own community.

We couldn’t do any of this without the tireless efforts of the amazing staff at the House, the thousands of volunteer hours contributed by hundreds of people, and the generous donations from so many wonderful friends of the House. Thanks to all of you, we are making a small but wonderful difference.

Mike Murphy is Senior Lender and Chief Credit Officer of Parkside Financial Bank & Trust, a locally owned and operated bank established in 2008. Parkside provides commercial lending, wealth management and trust services to privately held businesses and their owners. Mike has spent almost his entire 27-year career in commercial banking in St. Louis. He earned a BSBA in Finance

and an MBA from St. Louis University. Mike lives in Des Peres with his wife, Jeannie, and their six children, Michael (19), Mary (17), Kevin (16), Annie (14), Meg (11) and Grace (11), who generally keep Jeannie and him very busy. On Saturday, May 4, 2013, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of St. Louis will celebrate the fantastic supporters of the Tab Top Program at the 9th Annual Tab Top Pandemonium. The event will be held at the Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Various schools, organizations, businesses and individuals will take part in the day’s festivities. There is much fun to be had, including inflatables, games, music, tours and an array of tasty treats to enjoy. The event is free, and there is no need to register beforehand. All award recipients will be contacted by phone and recognized during a special awards ceremony, which will be held at a later date. Don’t forget about the award given to the person or group that creates the Most Creative Container to collect their tabs!

Our Golf Tournament co-chairs, Scott Bazoian (Cassidy Turley) and Steve Fahrig (Schnuck Markets), along with the dedicated committee, are proud to announce the 28th Annual Cassidy Turley/RMH Golf Tournament on June 2 and 3 at Meadowbrook Country Club. The year’s theme is “Keep Your eye on the Ball,” representing the new iPod Touch cellular bidding technology that will be featured at the silent auction, as well as the launch of our new mobile vision clinic, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, in partnership with the eye Care Charity of Mid-America.

RMHC St. Louis will host the 13th Annual Kids & Clays Tournament, sponsored by Moneta Group, on August 16 and 17. The Friday dinner auction will feature exciting silent and live auction items at the edward Jones Atrium.

The Sporting Clays Tournament begins on Saturday morning at the spectacular Strathalbyn Farms Club in St. Charles County, with three flights and 100 targets per participant. This event offers four classes, with prizes for each place, as well as a sub-junior division (under age 14), junior division (ages 14-17), ladies division and corporate team challenge. Breakfast, lunch and beverages will be served throughout the day, with an awards ceremony at the conclusion.

This year will mark the 20th Annual Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament, sponsored by McDonald’s, on Friday, September 27 at Forest Park Golf Course.

Foursomes compete for great prizes in a morning (7 a.m.) or afternoon (1 p.m.) round. The registration fee of only $100/$125 per person includes a gift bag, lunch and refreshments on the course. Golfers have the opportunity to test their luck at several par-3 games set up on the course. This tournament continues to grow each year, attracting participants looking for a fun, affordable tournament supporting a good cause.

This winter, Katy Pawlowicz, a Business Technology teacher at Ursuline Academy, didn’t think twice about slipping on her yellow rubber gloves to help deep-clean the Ronald McDonald Family Room at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center during her school’s service working retreat. As a member of the Ursuline Academy McClique (a group of volunteers who share a weekly Family Room shift), Katy continues to live out Ursuline’s motto, SeRVIAM, which means “I will serve,” by donating her time to RMHC St. Louis.

Katy and eight women (six Ursuline co-workers), as well as two husbands of Ursuline co-workers, began volunteering in the Family Room in 2008 after participating in the Family Dinner Program. Zoe Owen, an Ursuline teacher, found out about the Family Room opening and started the McClique. They now cover the 6 to 9 p.m. shift every Tuesday, which includes assisting families with their wants and needs and, more often than not, simply listening. According to Katy, her interaction with these families is the most rewarding aspect of her volunteer work. “My favorite part is knowing that I am making a difference and helping to make their challenges easier to deal with,” she explains.

Her McClique’s efforts don’t stop there: they also help by recruiting new volunteers and hosting Wish List item fundraisers to stock the Family Rooms. Thanks to dedicated volunteers like the members of the Ursuline Academy McClique, who go the extra mile to ensure families can find comfort and care within the walls of our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, we are able to serve more than 6,000 families every year.

april is national volunteer appreciation month!

Five years ago, Jim Hickey found himself retired and looking for an opportunity to get involved. Since it was just up the street from his own home, Jim decided to lend a hand at the Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue. Now Jim is a vital member of our RMHC team as a weekly House volunteer, among other designations.

In fact, Jim wears many different volunteer hats. While working

at the House on Park Avenue, his

responsibilities include room reservations,

family check-ins, and working the front desk. Occasionally, Jim also gives tours of the Park Avenue House to families and other organizations, including groups who

participate in our Family Dinner Program. Some of Jim’s favorite volunteer opportunities, however, are our special events, including Tab Top Pandemonium in May, the Cassidy Turley/ Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament & Dinner Auction in June, the Kids & Clays Tournament & Dinner Auction in August, and the Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament in September.

Year after year, Jim assists with his favorite event, Tab Top Pandemonium. This fun-filled day in May is open to the public. Families, schools, organizations and companies travel from all over Missouri and Illinois with tubs and tubs full of tab tops in tow. According to Jim, it’s special to see how, no matter how big or small of a collection, everyone shows up and works together to fill trailers full of tab tops, all to help families of seriously ill children.

And, according to Jim, that’s really what it’s all about. He says that in his eyes, the House means a home of a gracious and hardworking staff, all collaborating to provide a place of comfort for families in need. Although Jim’s primary goal is to help the families who call our Houses “home,” he also aspires to assist the staff.

Five years later, each week Jim Hickey continues to play an integral role at the Park Avenue House – always with a smile – on Mondays from 3 to 6 p.m., and we couldn’t be happier.

Thank you to everyone who donates their time and talent to RMHC St. Louis. Although we appreciate our volunteers every day of the year, we are especially grateful for them this month. Our team of more than 1,200 volunteers spend an average of 38,000 hours of work lending a hand at our Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and our special event fundraisers throughout the year. This does not even include our outstanding Committee members, who offer their leadership and expertise so frequently, or the Family Dinner Program volunteers, who

ensure that our families have a warm meal every night, as well as breakfast on the weekends. Without such an incredible group of individuals, our organization would not be able to serve nearly 8,000 families of seriously ill children every year.

In addition, RMHC St. Louis would like to thank Mercy Children’s Hospital for their generous support of our organization’s Volunteer Program.

In February, Dillard’s presented us with a check for $21,988.58, the proceeds from its exclusive 2012 Southern Living Cooking for Christmas cookbook. Since our partnership began 19 years ago, Dillard’s has donated more than $9.2 million to RMHC Chapters.

Since our partnership with La-Z-Boy began in 2008, they have provided furniture to more than 130 Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 2012, La-Z-Boy donated $5,727.76 worth of comfy furniture to RMHC St. Louis! Local La-Z-Boy employees also prepare meals for families staying at our three Ronald McDonald Houses.

Margaret Carson has a problem. Although some might say it’s a good problem to have.

The 74-year old widow has a sizeable Individual Retirement Account (IRA) that she really doesn’t need to maintain her lifestyle. Her plan is to leave the IRA’s assets upon her death to her kids and a couple of her favorite charities.

So what’s the problem? even though Margaret doesn’t need any of the assets or income generated by the IRA’s investments, she must take out a portion of her IRA every year due to Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) rules. For many Americans this rule does not present any problems because they need the annual distribution for income anyway. But for folks like Mrs. Carson, this can present some unwanted tax liabilities.

Margaret’s income needs are modest and are satisfied by Social Security, a small pension from her husband’s ex-employer, and dividends generated by stocks in a taxable account. But the RMD rule is forcing her to take out tens of thousands of dollars every year from her IRA that she doesn’t need. And this in turn is pushing her into a higher tax bracket. Fortunately, Congress has given people like Margaret an alternative.

Under the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) rule,

Mrs. Carson can decide not to take possession of the required distribution and instead have a check sent directly to a qualified charity. This way she satisfies her RMD, helps out a charity of her choice, and avoids paying more taxes since the distribution is no longer counted as income on her tax returns. Folks who must satisfy RMD rules can contribute up to $100,000 directly from an IRA to their favorite charity. (Multiple charities may be used but the aggregate amount cannot exceed $100k.)

This rule was first adopted by Congress in 2006 but was allowed to expire on December 31, 2011. However, under the “fiscal cliff” compromise reached by our political leaders on January 1 of this year, the QCD rule was brought back to life. Now people over 70 ½ can once again send their RMD’s directly to a charity instead of taking possession of it if they don’t need the money. (The fiscal cliff compromise opened a small window retroactive to the 2012 tax year but that window closed January 31, 2013.)

On February 28, 2013, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of St. Louis hosted the Cornerstone Society Cabaret to honor the individuals, corporations and organizations who became Founding Members of the Cornerstone Society in 2012.

This gratitude reception, sponsored by Mercy Children’s Hospital, took place at the Palladium St. Louis in Lafayette Square. entertainment was provided by RK Voices, the choir at Rosati-Kain High School; beautiful centerpieces were donated by Troy Flower Shop; and ceramic heart take-away gifts were handmade by children at Fairway elementary School. Community Support: SKC enterprises

The new Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® has arrived!In partnership with the eyecare Charity of Mid-America, this mobile eye care unit will visit elementary and middle schools throughout the Greater St. Louis Area, providing vision care to underprivileged children. Services provided include a comprehensive eye exam, which checks the overall health of the eyes. If a child needs glasses, he or she can choose from a variety of new frames at the point of service.

This exciting new program will expand the reach and impact of RMHC St. Louis by helping more children within the St. Louis area and surrounding communities in Missouri and Illinois. The mobile unit has already completed several visits, including three to Hazelwood east Middle School in late March and early April.

There are currently 48 Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles in operation throughout nine countries and regions of the world. This is the first Ronald McDonald Care Mobile in the U.S. that is dedicated solely to vision care.

Meet Sydni RaeAnn Stevenson, a little girl who has redefined the phrase “small but mighty.” She was born on October 25, 2012, three months before

her due date, in a city 75 miles away from home. Sydni came into the world weighing just 1 pound and

1 ounce. Because she was born at 26 weeks, Sydni’s lung function was uncertain at best. But since day one, she has defied the odds. Upon delivery, something miraculous happened: she audibly cried. “It was the greatest sound I’ve ever heard,” says Jeremy Stevenson, Sydni’s father. “That was our first glimmer of hope.”

The next few days were difficult for Jeremy and Sydni’s mother, Amy, who are from Junction City, Illinois. Jeremy spent his days and nights by his daughter’s side, while Amy recuperated from the emergency C-section. It was clear that their newborn baby would require extensive medical care, and they began to worry about all of the unknowns. Where would they stay? How would they make ends meet?

The next day, the parents received word that a room was available at the Ronald McDonald House, two blocks east of the hospital where Sydni was receiving treatment. “It is absolutely the greatest thing that has been handed to me,” says Jeremy of the home-away-from-home. “It would be otherwise unbearable.”

every day for months straight, Amy and Jeremy left for the hospital early in the morning and returned to the House late at night. Above all else, they valued this precious time with her – time that, just months ago, they did not know if they would have. “The Ronald McDonald House allowed me to be a full-time dad,” says Jeremy. “That’s the greatest blessing of all.”

Now, nearly six months later, Sydni is home with her parents in Junction City and weighs 7 pounds!

All participants start wearing their whitest of whites and throughout the course they are color ‘bombed’ by amazing volunteers. Participants finish looking like a beautiful rainbow and having the raddest time of their lives!

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of St. Louis has awarded American equity Mortgage with the 2012 Heart and Sole Award.

The Heart and Sole Award was created in 2005 to honor Coldwell Banker Gundaker in recognition of its more than 20-year commitment to RMHC St. Louis. each year, the nonprofit organization honors a new company that emulates Coldwell Banker Gundaker’s long-term commitment and generosity. Deanna Daughhetee, American equity Mortgage president and CeO, recently accepted the award on behalf of the company.

“On behalf of all our American equity Mortgage employees, I want to thank Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis for this tremendous award. We truly value our partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities and look forward to many more years working together to help families get to a better place,” says Daughhetee.

Since 1997, American equity Mortgage has been a generous supporter of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis.

This includes supporting three of the organization’s largest fundraising events: the annual Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament, Kids & Clays Tournament and Scramble for Charity. The company also sponsored RMHC St. Louis’ Gala of Gratitude in 2010, which celebrated the opening of the third Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis. In addition, American equity Mortgage was instrumental in establishing the Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital, now Mercy Children’s Hospital, in 2005. The Heart and Sole Award recipient is also longtime supporter of RMHC’s Tab Top Program, which collects aluminum beverage tabs as a way of raising funds for the House.
