As part of the application process, senior students were asked to write a short essay on “What does being a graduate

of Bingham High School mean to you?”

Victor Jiracek, recipient of the George Lendaris Scholarship, says, “There is more to graduation than being handed a piece of paper stating your achievements. The whole idea of school is to provide the student with an experience that will enrich their life. Education is a primary focus at Bingham High School, but there is more that comes from attending classes. I know that I will look back on these years with pride as I tell my children about the school that is Bingham. I am proud to call myself a Bingham graduate.”

Samuel Watkins, recipient of the Jason Laxman Memorial Scholarship, wrote, “All diplomas are not created equal. Most just assure that the bearer passed enough classes to be deemed competent in a high school setting. However, in a select few places, a diploma not only carries a certification of education, but it also carries with it an identity. This identity will stay with a person and help define them for the rest of their life. This is why it is so special to graduate from Bingham. For the rest of my life, I will be privileged to carry with me the spirit and tradition of Bingham. I will be able to proudly say, ‘I am a Miner.’ I will live my life the best I can knowing that I am representing my alma mater, Bingham High School.”

Alyssa Nielsen, recipient of the John Saltas Journalism Scholarship, shares, “Graduating from Bingham has opened many doors for my future and it has made me a better person. I have learned the importance of honesty through my participation in National Honor Society, the importance of service in Key Club, the importance of hard work in Newspaper, but most importantly Bingham has taught me what it means to be a ‘Miner’ student.”

Zachary Brock, recipient of the Cal Crump Scholarship, proudly states, “Being a graduate of Bingham High School means the world to me. Bingham has sunk into the very essence of my being. The spirit of scholarship, achievement, and excellence has become inseparable from my soul. The Miner lives on through me and through every individual who has passed through the halls of Bingham High School. It’s more than just a great

day to be a Miner; it’s a great lifetime to be a Miner.”

Kate Perry, recipient of the Sophia Lovrich Piedmont Scholarship, says, “Graduating from Bingham High School means that I have been able to pursue academic excellence in a good environment with excellent teachers and friends.”

Johnny Le, recipient of the Danny White Memorial Scholarship, states, “I love most how Bingham has changed me. Being a part of these traditions, the school spirit, and joking with the administration has turned me from a shy uninvolved student to someone who wishes they could do it all again.”

Melissa Jones, recipient of the Virginia McDonald Fine Arts Scholarship, says, “Graduating from Bingham High School to me means honor, knowledge, and self-worth. I feel confident that I can continue growing in college and wherever else I might go because of the outstanding environment at Bingham. I know that Bingham High School has influenced me by pushing me to succeed and helping me along the way.”

I shall always be grateful for the opportunity of growing

up in Bingham, truly a melting pot of humanity. It is true

that most mining towns were largely made up of

different races and creeds, but here we were so compact.

We all used the same schools, the same churches. We

went to the same theaters and the same entertainments.

We even used the same street. (Of course we only had

one to begin with.) This closeness produced a tolerance

and understanding between people from different

countries and places, that is not present in larger cities.

Two of our native daughters, who have made their mark

in their chosen profession, Ivy Baker Priest and Dr.

Lenore Richards have told me on several occasions that

the background and environment of Bingham was an

important part in their relations with the public and gave

them a broader understanding of the many problems that

confront all of us from time to time. I remember well of

my first friends—boys and girls of many nationalities,

Swedes, Finns, Greeks, Italians, Japanese, Jewish,

Austrians, Slavonians, English and Irish. We had no

racial problems as I can recall. We all played together

and we even picked up some of the languages of our

friends. Most of the Austrians and Slavonians and a

good portion of the Italians settled in Highland Boy, and

the Greeks, Japanese and Englishmen in Upper

Bingham. Carr Fork was the home of the Swedes

and Finns, and Upper Main had the bulk of the

Italians. It was considered unwise in those early

days to venture into a new territory alone. You

would probably run into one of the gangs in that

Down Memory Lane with John J. Creedon

particular neighborhood and get initiated. This

happened to my brother, Dan, the first day we were in

Bingham. Mother sent him down town to the Bingham

Merc for a piece of stovepipe. One hour later he returned

with the black stovepipe and a pair of eyes to match. He

had been initiated into the Carr Fork gang. Mother ran a

boarding house for the railroad men and took care of the

B&G dormitory too. Life was never dull in a boarding

house in those days, with boomer railroad men and

miners continually on the move. I was fascinated by the

tales of some of these men and would take in every word

they would say. They had been around, or at least they

talked like it. Some had sailed the seven seas, worked on

every railroad in the country, or worked in many of the

famous mining camps in the West. Tex Marshall, a tall

lean Texan, was one of my favorites. He would talk in

Spanish and throw fits for my benefit. He remained a

good friend of mine until his death. “Society” Brown

was another character I remember so vividly. He was a

dandy for sure. He wore a derby hat and carried a cane.

He worked at the B&G Depot. One Christmas, he paid

mother his board bill with twenty-five one dollar bills,

each tied with a pretty red ribbon and in a fancy jewel

case. Another character I remember was a pompous old

gentleman, named Howard, but called General Noga, by

my mother. She said he reminded her of Noga, the hero

of the Russian-Japanese war. He disliked children, and

especially me. I was bribed by Tex and some other men

to slam the door whenever I came in the house during

dinner hour as this displeased him very much. I made

quite a bit of money, as I was most cooperative in making

life miserable for him.

Class of 2012 – Graduation Highlights Principal, R. Thomas Hicks – May 31, 2012, 3:00 p.m., Utah Valley University Events Center

Bingham High School is a school that is highly successful in academic, arts, activity, and athletic achievements, rich in tradition, history, and culture, proud in spirit, integrity, and loyalty, and strong in compassion, service, and social relationships. Bingham first opened its doors on September 9, 1908. The first Bingham High School was actually known as Canyon Hall. During the 1909-1910 school year there were 31 students and two teachers. Eugene Hart was the supervising teacher, which was what the school principal was called in those days. I firmly believe that, a hundred years later, in the Class of 2012, these graduating seniors are smarter, better looking, and better prepared to face and conquer the challenges of the future.

During the 2011-2012 school year, there are several faculty members who have been recognized as outstanding

educators by students, Jordan School District Board of Education and administration, and state and national organizations. Last year during negotiations for a vending contract, Pepsi Cola representatives asked me what they could do to win the Bingham contract. I told them that they needed to endow two leadership scholarships for Bingham seniors as long as they held the contract. And so, this year there are two additional leadership scholarships being given to a boy and girl for $1,000.00 each. The recipients are: Tiffany Chin, Student body President, Samuel Watkins, Senior Class President. This is a surprise to them and how great is it to be handed $1,000.00 at graduation? During this year there has been $28,000.00 in scholarships distributed to Bingham seniors through alumni, family, and business partnerships and donations, and as of yesterday, the class of 2012 has received $5,337,026.00 in scholarship money.

Each year, the Bingham High School principal has the opportunity to purchase senior award winning pieces of art to add to the Bingham High School Art Collection that is on display in the library and throughout the school. Bingham has the largest student high school art collection in Utah, and these purchases have continued for the past 37 years. This year’s senior artists who have had their art works purchased for the school are: Jenna Peterson, “Train”, Carly

Haldeman, “Boy and Bridge”, Madelyn Berrett, “Giraffe”, Landon Barney, “Under Pressure”, Jacob Rosquist, “Blue

Tube Tea Pot”. Their artwork will inspire future performances of Bingham students. Bingham High School sponsors over 100 activity organizations of service, student recognition, and special interest. Some students compete in areas such as music, debate, theatre, and vocational and technology organizations like TSA, DECA, Skills USA, FCCLA, FBLA, the student PTSA Board, and South Jordan Youth City Council. Other activities are more for entertainment and socialization like clubs, special interest groups, and sponsored events such as Special Olympics, chalk the walk, and the motorcycle and car show. There are those activities specifically designed for individual, school, and community service and compassion such as Sub for Santa or peer tutors, best buddies escorting the special needs kids to the Junior Prom. Then there are the performance-oriented activities. No one will forget this year’s school musical, “Beauty and the Beast,” which captivated and entertained the Bingham community for nine sold-out performances. And by the way, “Beauty and the Beast” was the best high school musical performance that I have ever seen; it’s also the best kiss that Jake Lauritzen ever got in high school and it was caught on film. Then there’s the Dance Concert and the theatrical productions and the choral and instrumental concerts, and “Candlelight” and the concert at the Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah. And then there are the formal and semi-formal dances, stomps, assemblies, homecoming activities, the “Burning of the B,” the “Lighting of the B,” “the painting of the B which is a two hour paint fight on a steep mountainside,” or the state championship

tournaments, student recognitions, and other performance assemblies, and the Junior Prom at the Utah Capitol building, and the Senior Dinner Dance at Thanksgiving Point. A large part of Bingham’s activity programs involve our student government officers. This year’s student officers have served with distinction and success, and they have been responsible for scores of activities from the “Opening Assembly” to last night’s Yearbook Stomp and final “Burning of the B.”

I would like to recognize the school newspaper staff who publishes The Prospector, with Student Editor-in-Chief is Alyssa Nielsen and faculty advisor, Brett Boberg. I can’t say that I always approve of everything printed and I certainly like the disclaimer line, “Opinions expressed in this publication are those of The Prospector and do not necessarily reflect the viewpoints of the Bingham High School administration, teachers, staff, or studentbody The freedoms and rights of press, vote, assembly, property, life, liberty and others are basic to our American way of life. I would like to express my personal appreciation to this year’s Yearbook staff, the Yearbook editors: Alyssa Fowlks and McKenzie Chaudoin, and the Yearbook advisor, Pat McDonald. Bingham’s yearbooks date back to 1918 and they are the center of the Bingham archive collection in the Alumni Conference Room at school. Those yearbooks recognize the history and successes of our school and our students. Bingham High School athletic programs have enjoyed another year of outstanding athletic accomplishments due to a very experienced, well-prepared group of student athletes and great parent, patron, and coaching support. Bingham High School sponsors 48 athletic teams in 20 sport areas and has over 100 coaches. There are 6 5A high schools in Region 4 competition, and 24 5A high schools in state competition. The tradition of achievement continues as Bingham teams won 7 of 22 region championships, two state championships, and three second place state championships this year. Bingham Cheerleaders won their state championship competition sponsored by the Utah Cheerleading Association and coached by Head Coach McGrath. Bingham’s 92nd State Championship. Bingham Winter Guard won the state championship competition sponsored by the Utah Winter Guard Association and coached by Head Coach Lucero. That was Bingham’s first ever Winter Guard State Championship and Bingham’s 94th State Championship. This year there are two out-of-school activities that I wish to recognize. The first is the Bingham Girls’ LaCrosse Club Team sponsored by the Utah LaCrosse Association. This year’s Bingham Girls’ LaCrosse team won their state championship. The second is an individual student. Here’s a clip to watch. Lex Ju is a rodeo state champion and a national champion contender in bareback horse riding and calf roping. Bingham has 5 other senior individual state champions this year. They are: JJ Larson, Wrestling, Paul Langi, Wrestling, Shane Callahan, Swimming, Lindsey Royall, Dual State Champion in Girls’ Track in the 100 meter and 200 meter. Bingham High School has won 95 state championships in 17 of the UHSAA’s 22 sponsored areas. No other Utah high school has achieved that standard.

As another very important note, the average grade point average for Bingham High School senior athletes is a 3.67. Students, there are many people to be appreciative to for your successful high school experiences. For every class, activity, competition, and event produced and sponsored at Bingham High School there are many hours of planning, preparation, and practice that go into each minute of performance. In your behalf, graduates, I applaud all the teachers, coaches, advisors, counselors, administrators, and other support staff members for the many hours spent in assisting you with your accomplishments. But more than any, I commend the parents, guardians, families, and friends of this class that have assisted and supported you to reach your goal of high school graduation. Class of 2012: please show your appreciation by standing and applauding all those who have helped you accomplish so much to this point in your lives. We have a 31 year tradition at Bingham High School of “pinning” students while recognizing their successes and accomplishments with a custom Bingham pin designed by our studentbody officers, a historical speech, a Bingham two-handed handshake representing the pick and shovel on the Bingham emblem symbolic of a great work ethic, a hearty congratulations, an appreciative and gracious thank you from the students, and all ending with the statement…Seniors… “It’s a great day to be a Miner”. This year we have awarded over 3,500 pins to Bingham students, parents, guests, and alumni to honor and recognize their involvement and success. Every graduate was presented a pin before the ceremony. “This is Bingham” and “You are the Best of Bingham” and “We’ll always remember…” are other statements that are used with great pride. I hope that you graduates remember these statements as a matter of personal and collective honor as you move forward with your lives.

Pay Dirt Nominations

Attention Alumni! Each year at the Homecoming Assembly, the Bingham High School Alumni Committee recognizes an outstanding alumni member for their life success. The award is called the “Pay Dirt Award” referencing a miner’s success when he mines earth and finds his treasure. We are accepting nominations for those who may be deserving of this prestigious award. With your nomination, please include a short biography and contact information. Please e-mail the information to the Bingham High School Alumni Pay Dirt Committee Chair, Lynn DeMill at: [email protected]

All nominations are due no later than July 1, 2012.

Class Lists and Representatives Every five years we meet with our high school friends for a reunion to get reacquainted and to renew old friendships. Those of you who have organized these reunions know how tough it can be to find everyone. Please, if you have a list of addresses for your class, forward the list to me at [email protected] or send to Annette Gardner Egan at 4541 W. 8790 S. West Jordan, UT 84088. It is very helpful to get email addresses, where available. We are still looking for alumni members who are willing to represent their class. This isn’t a huge commitment, but it is so valuable to the Alumni Foundation to have a representative that we can contact. We are trying very hard to keep addresses and other pertinent information updated. We want to keep the traditions and memories of Bingham High School alive for another 100 years. It will take all of us to accomplish that.

Class of 1973 Chat and Chew

The class of 1973 will be reuniting in September 2013 to celebrate 40 years since graduation. In preparing and planning this great event, JayDee Cahoon, Annette Egan, and Perry Newman have decided to try to get people more excited by meeting now and then for a “chat and chew”. These have been so fun and originally started with 6 classmates. It has grown to as many as 30. If you aren’t on Facebook, please join and stay updated on these events. If you aren’t into computers, call Annette at 801-856-7510. We would like to be able to contact all of our classmates to keep them updated about reunions and other fun activities. Please forward any information you may have to Annette Gardner Egan at [email protected] or 4541 W. 8790 S. West Jordan, UT 84088. Let’s hit “pay dirt” and have the best reunion ever in September 2013!

SMILES

I don’t feel 80. In fact, I don’t feel anything till noon. Then it’s time for my nap! Why is it that at class reunions you feel younger than everyone else looks? One way to get silence at a woman’s bridge club is to ask who is the oldest. When I was 18, I wanted to save the world. Now I’d be happy to save a hundred dollars! Just when you’ve learned to make the most of your life, most of your life is gone.

Do You Remember? By Michael Ann (Creedon) Scroggin, Class of 1961

Do you remember when “the kids from the valley” came up the flats to go to Bingham High? I was in junior high when it happened and it was the beginning and the end of many things at the school. In 1958 I was in the last class to start seventh grade at the high school and stay for six years and graduate in 1961. In the fall of 1958 West Jordan Junior High would open and Bingham High would become just a high school. Having more students at the school changed us from a “B” school to an “A” school. It was a time to make new friends and have more opportunities. In 1960 with the help of “the kids from the valley” we finally won the class “A” basketball trophy. What an exciting time it was for us Miners. That trophy occupies a special place in the case at Bingham High. We honor the names inscribed on that emblem—George Sluga, Roy Hatch, John Johnson, Clifford Butt, Jim Lovat, Paul Wiechman, Kent Simkins, John Ugarte from Bingham and Copperton and Harold Dimond, David Erickson, Grant Price, Frank Dimond from the valley and our wonderful coach, Udell Wankier. This was just the beginning for the miners to win many more state championships. Bingham High School has gone through many changes. The school moved from two different locations in Bingham Canyon and then to Copperton and finally to South Jordan, but one thing has stayed the same. We are all Bingham’s sons and daughters.

(Scholarship recipient excerpts continued from page 2)

Luke Saunders, recipient of the Norma Nichols Memorial Scholarship, wrote, “There are plenty of good high schools around the country. However, there is only one Bingham High School. And in my mind, it transcends all the others in that it better prepares its student for what is to come than any of the rest of them. Because of what Bingham has taught me—discipline, hard work, and a healthy disregard for the impossible—I am going to live up to every ounce of my limitless potential.”

Erica Knight, recipient of the Beard Family Scholarship, states, “Being at Bingham High School has given me much more than an education; it has given me friendships that will last forever and skills to succeed later in life. I am honored to graduate from Bingham High School and to have contributed to its heritage of greatness.”

Joshua Simpson, recipient of the 1908 Club Scholarship, says, “Graduation is a culmination of public education. Inherent in its deep-rooted traditions is the unspoken knowledge of what it took to get there, for that effort and experience can never be forgotten. Bingham offered me so much, and by taking advantage of my plenteous opportunities, I was able to forge a unique experience that will forever define my high school years. It was an honor for me to attend this school. It was an honor for me to take part in long-standing Bingham traditions. And it will be an honor for me to count myself a Bingham graduate.”

Chad Garner, recipient of the James Goris Memorial Scholarship, wrote, “Being a graduate of Bingham High School is something that sticks with you for the rest of your life. It is something you can always look back on. These memories are what will make me proud to be part of the Bingham High School alumni.”

The Class of 1965 Scholarship

The Class of 1965 Scholarship is the first and only scholarship given by a specific graduating class of Bingham High School. For the past two years, members of that class have put together the funding for an alumni scholarship. The selection is made based on several factors, but the main considerations are need and either a parent or grandparent must be a graduate of Bingham High School. It would be awesome if other classes would join the ranks of this class and sponsor a scholarship for a deserving graduate. Make it an agenda item when planning your next reunion.

Author James Patterson was born in Newburgh, New York, in 1947. Before he hit it big with his best-selling series of thrillers about psychologist Alex Cross, Patterson was an ad man who came up with the famous slogan “I’m a Toys R Us Kid!”

The 251st and final episode of the TV series M*A*S*H aired in 1983. An estimated 125 million viewers tuned in, making it the most watched finale of all time.

The original King Kong movie premiered in New York City in 1933. Combining a lion’s and a tiger’s roars, and then running the sound backward created the great ape’s famous howl!

Education costs have increased dramatically over the last few years. Your donation to our scholarship endowment fund would go a long way in helping the foundation award scholarships to senior students at Bingham High School. Our goal is to be able to award larger scholarship amounts and an increased number of scholarships. Please help us meet

our goal.

We appreciate the support and generosity of the students, staff, graduates, and friends of Bingham High School. We ask that you consider making donations to the Alumni Foundation whenever a loved one or classmate passes away. A short line in the obituary could read: In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Bingham High School Alumni Foundation Scholarship Fund. What a tribute to them and what a great support to our

scholarship program (and it’s tax deductible!).
