Illinois College of Optometry:

Dr. Jennifer Harthan has received a $78,000research grant from Kala Pharmaceuticals toconduct a Phase 3 Clinical Trial. Dr. Harthanis the Principal Investigator of the projectalongside sub-investigators Drs. StephanieFromstein, Michelle Man, and ResearchCoordinator Elyse Nylin. The title of theproject is, A Phase 3, Double-Masked,Randomized, Controlled Study of KPI-1210.25% Ophthalmic Suspension Compared toVehicle in Subjects with Dry Eye Disease(STRIDE 3).

Dr. Lindsay Sicks was awarded 1st place forher GSLS photo submission, “CharleuxSign.” The image appeared on the cover ofthe April issue of Contact Lens Spectrum.

ICO was well-represented at GSLS withseveral posters, including two from ContactLens Resident Dr. Laurel Roberts.

Drs. Louise Sclafani and Lindsay Sicks bothcompleted their Fellowship in the ScleralLens Education Society last year.

Marshall B. Ketchum UniversitySouthern California College ofOptometry:

MBKU welcomes Dr. Erin Rueff. She joinsthe Cornea and Contact Lens Service atSCCO as a full time faculty member.

Dr. Eric Borsting was named the new InterimDean at SCCO.

Dr. Eunice Myung Lee has edited a newtextbook ‘Clinical Cases in Eye Care’published by Wolters Kluwer (October 2018)with Dr. Denise Goodwin at PacificUniversity College of Optometry and Dr.Mark Rosenfield at SUNY College ofOptometry. The book includes over 120clinical cases reflecting the current scope ofprimary eye care practice. A few contactlens cases are included, in large part due tothe efforts of AOCLE members whocontributed: Dr. Louis Frank (MCPHS), Dr.Beth Kinoshita (PUCO), Dr. RosalynnNguyen-Strongin (SCCO), Dr. Neil Pence(IU), and Dr. Barry Weissman (SCCO).

Cases cover a wide range of commonlyseen conditions and include refractive,perceptual, binocular vision, anterior andposterior segment, and neurological andsystemic disorders. The editors had the aimto provide a teaching tool on conditions seenregularly in clinical settings and to offerexpert opinion as a springboard for valuablediscussion/exploration.

Midwestern UniversityChicago College of Optometry:

Dr. Jenelle Mallios was named AssociateDean of Clinical Affairs.

Dr. John Gialousakis was named Director ofCurriculum Development.

Dr. Javeria Azhar became a Fellow of theAmerican Academy of Optometry at theAnnual Meeting in San Antonio.

Dr. Daniel Deligio was named AssistantDirector of Rotations at CCO and has alsojoined the GPLI Advisory Board.

GSLS was busy for the CCO team thisJanuary as Drs. Javeria Azhar, JohnGialousakis, and Daniel Deligio presentedposters. Dr. Deligio also was awarded 2ndplace for his GSLS photo submission.

Midwestern UniversityArizona College of Optometry:

Dr. Florencia Yeh was honored for her 2ndplace poster at GSLS.

Nha Cao, a fourth-year student and founderof the contact lens club at AZCOPT was awinner in the ABB Optical Challenge withher GSLS poster focused on the effect offreezing temperatures on senofilcon A softcontact lenses.

New England College ofOptometry:

NECO has named Erik Weissberg, OD,FAAO, as the college’s next Vice Presidentand Dean of Academic Affairs. Dr.Weissberg graduated from NECO in 1997.

NECO also held inauguration festivities fornew President Howard B. Purcell, OD ’84FAAO on April 7, 2019. Purcell is the 13thpresident at the 125-year-old institution. Hestarted in the role in July 2018, but wasjoined by more than 200 people at theEdward M. Kennedy Institute for the UnitedStates Senate in Boston to officially kick offhis tenure.

NOVA Southeastern UniversityCollege of Optometry:

Nova Southeastern University was wellrepresented at GSLS 2019. Dr. ChandraMickles presented a podium paperpresentation during the General Session inaddition to her three posters.

Drs. Carol Yu and Anisha Patel, formerNSUCO residents, and Dr. Mickles’ poster“Scleral Lens Success with CornealDystrophies” was awarded first place in theClinical Poster category.

Drs. Almas Khan, Thuy-Lan Nguyen, andcurrent NSUCO residents, Drs. Swati Kumarand Ryan Nguyen also presented posters atthis year’s GSLS.

Dr. Andrea Janoff co-authored two posterspresented at ARVO’19 in Vancouver.

University of Montreal:

Langis Michaud was recently elected as amember of the International Society ofContact Lens Researchers.

Dr Claudine Courey was named a Fellow ofthe Scleral Lens Education Society.

At GSLS, the Montreal contact lensresidents, Dr. Alexandre Poirier-Lavalléeand Dr. Marie Michelle Dupuis, presented aposter on challenging cases. Dr. Michaudpresented 2 posters, 2 papers and onelecture at the meeting. Undergraduatestudent Gabriella Courey presented a posterand a free paper at the meeting andreceived the Scleral Lens EducationSociety’s GSLS Travel Grant for her work.She will graduate in June and begin aMasters program in specialty contact lensesunder the direction of Dr. Michaud.

The Montreal CL department alsocontributed to the special edition of ContactLens Anterior Eye with a manuscript aboutscleral lenses and intraocular pressure.Work done in this area is in collaborationwith Dr. Dan Samaha, assistant professor atMontreal, who specializes in glaucoma. Thedepartment also collaborates with Dr. MariaWalker at University of Houston on topicrelated clinical research projects.

University of Missouri-St. LouisCollege of Optometry:

Dr. Edward Bennett has announced hisretirement at the end of this academic year,after 37 years at UMSL. The College will be

honoring him at a reception on June 21,2019 (during Optometry’s Meeting in St.Louis) at the College of Optometry. Theevent will run from 5-9pm and there will beshuttle transportation available. There will becomments dedicated to Ed starting at7:30pm. While the team at UMSL is sad tosee him retire, they are happy that he andJean can enjoy time golfing, traveling andhaving fun.

University of Pikeville KentuckyCollege of Optometry:

Dr. Michael Bacigalupi was selected asDean effective July 1, 2018. Dr. Bacigalupihas 13 years of experience in optometriceducation and previously served as theassistant dean for Student Affairs andAdmissions at NOVA.

Dr. Renee Reeder joined the team at KYCOafter 21 years of service at ICO where sheserved many roles including foundingcoordinator of the contact lens residencyprogram, chief of the Cornea Center forClinical Excellence, and coordinator of theocular disease curriculum. At KYCO, she willserve as full professor and continue to beinvolved in anterior segment disease andcontact lens education.

Dr. Donald Egan and Dr. Frank Spors(Western University of Health Sciences) won3rd place at the Global Specialty LensSymposium with their poster “A Comparisonof Manual Keratometry and SimulatedKeratometry when Determining Central K-Readings.”

The Health Professions Education Buildingis now ready to accept the KYCO fourth year

class. In the classroom, students utilize 3-Dinstruction and iPad learning managementsystems.

Dr. Frank Spors was a guest lecturer andworkshop coordinator for an orthokeratologyprogram at KYCO supported by the ContactLens Manufacturer’s Association. The Classof 2020 were each certified in fitting.

Southern College of Optometry:

Student Julie Ervin of SCO was a winner inthe ABB Optical Challenge and presented aposter at GSLS titled “Treatment ofKeratoconjunctivitis Sicca Secondary toSicca Syndrome with Scleral Lenses.” SCOfaculty member Dr. Pam Schnell and adjunctfaculty member Dr. Denise Roddy were hercoauthors.

SUNY College of Optometry:

SUNY students, residents, and facultypresented posters at this year’s GSLS ontopics such as "Contact Lens Managementand Complications in a Post PK Patient withAlternating ET" and "Fitting a KeratoconusPatient into a Multifocal GP Contact Lenswith an Aspheric Back Surface Design".

Dr. Sharon Keh joined two SUNY alumni atGSLS to lecture on corneal transplantationand to present the preliminary results of aninvestigator-initiated scleral lens studysponsored by SynergEyes.

Dr. Azinda Morrow published an article inReview of Optometry (January 2019)entitled, "What You Can Learn from Lids."

University of Waterloo:Professor Lyndon Jones, Director of CORE,is this year’s BCLA Medal awardee at theBritish Contact Lens Association meeting inManchester, England. This award is givenfor outstanding achievements in the field ofcontact lenses or anterior eye research.

At GSLS 2019, Lyndon formally received hisCooperVision-sponsored Americas IACLEContact Lens Educator of the Year award.

OcuBlink™, a spin-off initiative out of CORE,has just piloted their eye model for foreignbody removal to optometry students atWaterloo (https://www.ocublink.com/fbr).

IACLE has announced the winners of the2019 IACLE Contact Lens Educator of theYear Awards to recognize and rewardachievement in contact lens education, andthe 2019 IACLE Travel Awards formembers to attend major internationalmeetings. This year’s awards will bepresented at events around the world tomark IACLE’s 40th Anniversary.

The International Association of ContactLens Educators would also like to announcethat it will hold its Fellowship Exam inNovember 2019. It is the first administrationfor which the new Distance LearningProgram (DLP) will be available tocandidates to prepare for the exam.

The new DLP – an online self-study program– was launched in September 2018 to alignwith the fully revised and updated NewIACLE Contact Lens Course.

All IACLE members are eligible to sit for theexam, which will take place on November16, 2019. The deadline for applications isJune 30, 2019. The next Fellowship Examwill be in 2021.

Candidates who achieve a successfuloutcome and have been members for atleast 12 months can apply for Fellow ofIACLE status. Those who meet theFellowship criteria can use the prestigiousFIACLE title.

Existing FIACLEs can also re-sit theFellowship Exam as many times as theywish – free of charge – to refresh theirknowledge and keep abreast of the latestdevelopments.________________________________

The STAPLE (Soft Toric and PresbyopicLens Experience) Program, is acollaborative initiative on the part of Alcon,Bausch + Lomb, CooperVision, andJohnson & Johnson Vision to provide 2ndand/or 3rd year optometry students withgeneric hands on experience fitting soft toricand soft multifocal lenses on patients in anon-competitive environment.

This year they’ll reach their 300th workshopsince the first STAPLE Program in 2012.The day consists of a lecture, hands-onfitting with patients using four lens designs -one per manufacturer - and lunch or dinnerplus a wrap-up discussion.

In January 2019 Contamac began the newyear with two new product launches. Thefirst, a new hyper-Dk GP material, OptimumInfinite™ was announced.
