A destination place to eat is one of the criteria onmy general checklist for day trips. (We had a couple ofbackup ideas for Bennington.) Other musts are a rea-sonable driving distance; interesting cultural or outdoorattractions; and shopping opportunities (hardware stores

and real estate offices dont count).Bennington has all these.For history, theres the Bennington Monument, a trib-

ute to the Revolutionary War battle that was the begin-ning of British Gen. John Burgoynes downfall. The battleactually took place in Walloomsac, NY, (where theresa battlefield park) but Bennington had the wherewithaland the very visible knoll on which to build a 306-footstone spire in the years between 1877-1891.

We went to the Bennington Museum, 75 Main St., tospend a fascinating hour-plus. The museums presenta-tion is traditional. Its collections are eclectic and fun.One comes away from the Grandma Moses exhibit, forexample, with a far greater appreciation of her artistry.As some critics now suggest, theres more to her workthan its primitivism.

The museum has a large exhibit of pottery (for whichthe town was once famous, and, in fact, still boasts thefamed Bennington Pottery) and a room dedicated to theBattle of Bennington. Elsewhere, the museum keeps oneof North Americas earliest flags, the Bennington Flag, ina dark place, so light wont further fade its fragile hues.

Theres one of the most chock-full exhibition roomsyou can imagine, the Church Gallery, which, accordingto the museum, reflects the collection it opened with in1928. Displayed are tools, medical utensils, paintings,

wood stoves, telegraphy apparatus, dolls, toys, sculp-tures and a Brattleboro-made Estey pipe organ.

Wood chips in a glass case are all thats left from theold Catamount Tavern, where one-time Salisbury resi-dent Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys plottedto take Fort Ticonderoga. A victualing document com-piled by the taverns owner, Stephen Fay, notes Allens

As trout season approaches I get very fidgety andstart looking at bugs on my windshield to seewhats hatching.

Seriously.

That the insects are all small, dark and smushed meansnothing. Its the ritual that counts.

The myth of fly-fishing is that it is a difficult and expen-sive sport, practiced by a relative handful ofelitist obses-sives who revel in the arcane and never catch anything.

I know fishermen who fit the unflattering description,no question the kind of guy who strolls into the flyshop with a $1,000 bill stapled to his forehead and startsbabbling about the baetis hatch.

But I know far more of the other kind the anglerswho have patiently worked at flicking a concoction ofhook and feather at a wary critter for years or decades.

flies.The best piece of fly-fishing advice I ever got was from

John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War.We were in the Rio Grande Gorge, a poor mans GrandCanyon consisting of an 800-foot deep fissure in thehigh desert around Taos, N.M. The trails going into thisabyss are treacherous for the sure-footed sheep; theclumsy angler is in constant peril.

And the river itself is large, deep, swift and forbidding.Its also full of trout.I asked Nichols what fly to use, expecting a complex and

technical reply.

He said, Well, I start with the little brown one, and ifthat doesnt work I switch to the little green one, and thenthe little yellow one . . .

Its been my motto ever since.Spring and the start of fishing season dont mean I get all

gooey about the wonders of nature. By all accounts I am aninsensitive clod who wouldnt know a wonder of nature ifone bit me in the fundament.

I do get excited this time of year, though because onceI am in the fishing mode my brain disengages. All the thingsthat usually combine to give me a more or less permanentheadache are temporarily banished.

Its just me and the rod and the fly, the water and thetrout.

Afterward, of course, its the cold feet and the achingback. But theres always another trip to another river aroundthe corner.

Spring means a change indiet.

Ultimate Frisbee is a sure way to have fun

and exercise on spring and summer after-noons.

The sport is played like football, excepta frisbee is thrown around to teammates

and theres no tackling. Just blocking.The goal of the game is to pass the Frisbee from team-

mate to teammate in one of the end zones.Its a competitive sport, with players doing whatever it

takes to win, but at the same time its fun, Winsted resi-dent Raymond Robillard says. You dont need to play itwith any referee. You can play it with an honor system. Ifyou go out of bounds you call yourself on it.

Robillard is a teacher at The Gilbert School in Winsted,who also organizes local ultimate Frisbee games.

Ive been playing for about ten years, Robillard said.I was back in college when I rst heard of the game.One of my friends called me and told me that she was

playing ultimate Frisbee.I told her I didnt know how to play at all. She told me

not to panic and that they would all teach me. After therst time I played, I was hooked.

Robillard said he gets as much cardiovascular exercisethis way as playing soccer.

You constantly run up and down the eld, he said.In Winsted, what we play is a kind of pickup game.Whoever shows up we play with. Because its a pickup

game you dont have formal strategies so we dont runplays.

Robillard said that the sport can be played by anyone.One of the major appeals of ultimate Frisbee is that,

whether you are incredibly athletic or not, tall or short,or if you can or cant run fast, anyone can play it, hesaid. Even if you do or dont have a sports physique,you can play.p
