The DispaTch sTaFF

As the whipping winds of March sub-side into the beauty of spring, Vance County tourism will begin to hit its blooming stage.

It’s an annual rite, an area flush with many attractions that are year-round getting bol-stered like many other regions in the state by spring and summer travelers. Kerr Lake is remains our showpiece, a center for water-relat-ed activities, but there’s so much more to our place on the map.

History is prevalent in many areas of our community. The Hen-

derson Institute Histori-cal Museum has memo-ries of high school state champions, leaders of the community and a true connection to the surrounding black com-munity.

The downtown his-toric district is listed in the National Register of Historic Sites, and includes a self-guided walking tour. Driving through the county on a tour of historic sites is also possible.

In fact, getting out-side of the city just a mile or so can lead to one of the true links to the glorious past. The Raleigh Road Outdoor

Theatre originally opened as the Moon-Glo back in 1949. Showtime is still about dusk, and the theater awakened from a winter hiberna-tion earlier this month with fresh releases, including the “Safe Haven” film based on North Carolina novelist Nicholas Sparks and filmed in Wilmington.

Area churches and cemeteries dot our land-scape.

So do specialty stores not linked to any na-tional chains. Whether it is a wood artisan and quilt maker, handmade Dispatch file photo

Henderson’s downtown district is registered on the National Register of Historic Sites. see HISTORY/PAGE 11

Dispatch file photoKerr Lake is annually among the three most visited state parks in the state, attract-ing about 1 million each year.

The DispaTch sTaFF

When it comes to tourism and Vance County, the conversa-tion starts with Kerr Lake.

It is the largest man-made lake east of the Mississippi River, built in the 1950s as a means of flood control for eastern North Carolina through the John H. Kerr Dam and Reser-voir.

The byproduct of the environmental struc-ture, which has more than 850 miles of shore-line fingering its way along the Virginia state line, is one of North Carolina’s largest parks

and tourist attractions. On the North Caro-

lina side are 10 boat launch points, nine of which are in Vance County. Another is just over the county line in Warren.

Within the seven state parks are more than 700 campsites. Picnic tables, fire pits, tent pads, modern rest rooms and hot show-ers are the norm, not the exception. Electric and water hookups are available.

If fishing is the game, largemouth and striped bass await, as well as catfish and crappies. Fishing tournaments

and sailing competi-tions abound, starting in April and running through the fall.

Personal watercraft are plentiful. Swimming areas are everywhere, including a designated spot.

And throughout the lake area are plenty of help for the stay, with marinas stocked with equipment, fuel and the means for most repairs.

Kerr Lake is a jewel, with shining water that ranks among the top three attractions visited annually by those going to state parks. Jockey’s

Ridge and Fort Macon join the lake in attracting at or above 1 million visitors regularly, even through the recent recession.

For the year 2011, the most year available through the N.C. Com-merce website, Vance County had

an economic impact of $41.7 million from domestic tourism. More than 280 jobs were directly attributable to travel and tourism and travel generated a payroll of more than $5 million.

State and local tax revenues from travel amounted to $3.6 million, saving county residents more than $80 in taxes.

local crafts, individually made wood items, all things peanuts or a country market, Vance County can answer the request.

Events are beginning to mark the weekends.

Before Memorial Day weekend arrives, those in the Tri-County can venture to Warren County for

the Easter Bonnet Parade, Archae-ology Day and SpringFest, and head south to Granville County for Strawberry Day and the Granville Arts Festival.

And in events equally geared to bring out local residents, area chamber of commerce groups will begin to highlight their downtown areas. Henderson starts Meet Me in the Street activities in April, and Oxford has a similar Alive After Five festivities coming in May.
