Our group in Uganda is headed by Jalia and her husband Daniel. Together, they design, organize, and mentor the men and women of their community while they create our exclusive pieces.

“I have a dream of becoming a famous designer; in this way I can attract a higher market, and be able to support my people, as they work to get out of poverty, which has crippled so many,” says Jalia.

Alma Cristina is a very talented weaver from Santa Catarina Palopo, a village in western Guatemala. She studied beyond the average woman from her village, completing 6th grade at the age of 12. Due to pressure from her parents, Alma Cristina left school and joined her four sisters as weavers. Weaving has allowed her to earn an income and cover her children’s education costs. Though she and her husband are currently renting their home, her ability to contribute to a household income has enabled them to construct their own home.

Refugees from war torn countries arrive with hope upon their resettlement in America. They hear of America, Wal-Marts lined with food, clean water, and free schools and believe that a life of freedom awaits them. However, due to language barriers, few job opportunities, and discrimination, they are faced with just as many challenges. Huang has come a long way since she arrived in the United States two years ago.

When we first met her, she was preparing to have her third baby while her husband was desperately looking for a job. Today, her husband has a wonderful job where he’s well-loved and Huang is able to contribute to the family’s income.

Huang learned how to create textiles from her mother. In partnership with a group in Austin called Hill Country Tribers, she is teaching other women in the group how to create jewelry and investing in the next generation.

All of our jewelry from Ecuador is created from seeds that are sustainably harvested in the Andean region of Ecuador. Some materials are gathered from the rainforest floor while others require a skilled farmer to climb high into the tropical canopy to harvest ripe pods. Through a manual, low energy process, tagua, acai, and pambil seeds are transformed into fashion forward pieces that tell a story of sustainability. Each bead will have sculptural natural irregularities, both in color and form, to create a truly one of a kind piece.

After the seeds are transformed to beads, skillful artisans craft them into beautiful bracelets,

necklaces, and earrings. Noonday Collection, in partnership with the Andean Collection, offers artisans the opportunity to participate in the global market

while inspiring you with access to the elusive world of the rural Andes. Their non-profit arm, Andean Project, ensures that this new

market access is productive and healthy and addresses other poverty related social issues.

Two of those artisans, Nancy and Carlos, create jewelry in their home workshop and hope to one day meet the people that buy their jewelry. The couple

looks forward to their continued access to the global market to save for

their children’s education. “It fills us with great pride to know that our work is appreciated throughout the world. Thank you for allowing

us to make a living from our craft.”

paper beadsBukenya lives on less than a $1 a day earned from laying bricks. There are some weeks that go by where he doesn’t get paid by the construction manager and he is soon sleeping on the floor of a man’s house who opens his doors nightly for 40-50 homeless Ugandans.

At least, that was how Bukenya was living. Now he has a small house of his own, which he shares with his wife, Coral. He met her while she was also homeless, having been abandoned twice by men after becoming pregnant.

Paperbeads are created by rolling various lengths and colors of paper strips around a tiny toothpick. The beads are

then varnished several times before they become the fashionable necklaces, earrings, and bracelets we have come to love.

Coral and Bukenya are part of a group that has become a family to Noonday Collection.

“We now have a home, and we even have furniture for our home and got

prenatal care for Coral’s last pregnancy.” All this was made possible because they learned how to roll beads out of strips of paper.

guatemalan textiles Gertrudis left school at a young age and was sent to sell handcrafts in the local artisan market near her town of Santa Catarina Palopo in Guatemala. She soon learned Spanish, in addition to her native Kaquchikel. For 7 years, she became an expert salesperson, and learned more about the opportunities that speaking Spanish could bring her. She now weaves her own pieces from home and, due to her access to microcredit loans, she wants to invest in renting a small artisan shop in the local lakeside market.

Weaving in Guatemala has played an integral role in the lives of the over 25 Mayan people

groups in Guatemala. The highly intricate designs communicate their personal identity, their heritage,

and their ideological beliefs. In pre-Columbian times, only the elite classes could own or wear ornately woven cloth and clothing. Today,

weaving has become a cornerstone in the economic survival of both households and villages.

The art of natural dye making has been a long standing tradition in the Lago de Atitlan

region. Local leaves, flowers, and bark are boiled, their natural colors

extracted, and the yarn is dyed to create an entirely organic process.

Each scarf in our collection is woven using handlooms the women make and the textiles

take anywhere from 4-8 hours to create.

Each of these is handfinished by a group of women in Kenya who receive a fair wage for their work. One of the women, Wavinya, and her husband have four children. With the money from the bags and kikoys she was able to buy goats which recently gave birth.

Sidhama has been working at one such cooperative for 27 years. Her

husband abused her so badly that she ended up in the hospital. While there,

a social worker there told her about the jewelry cocooperative. The income from her new job enabled her to leave her abusive situation. When she joined the co-op

she didn’t know how to speak Hindi since she is from Karnataka. Her language skills that she gained enabled her to take on more responsibility, and she now travels all over the city. Her five children are all married. “Before finding this cooperative, I used to struggle a lot. I have now learned how to take steps to make big changes in my life.”

indian cooperativesThere are 20 to 65 million bonded laborers in India, despite substantive and clear laws prohibiting this. A person becomes a bonded laborer when their labor is demanded as a means of repayment for a loan. The person is then tricked or trapped into working for very little or no pay, often for seven days a week. The value of their work is invariably greater than the original sum of money borrowed. The forced labor system is present in many industries and those perpetrators who violate Indian laws to compel the labor of others infringe upon citizens’ most fundamental rights. Noonday Collection partners with many different jewelry-making groups in India whose goal is to build long term equitable trading relationships that ensure low-income artisans are truly being helped out of

The Beza Entoto Outreach began in 2007 in response to the unimaginable need that began to grow

on Entoto Mountain. After spending some time praying for the people of the Entoto

community, this small group of seven individuals felt God leading them to do more. Very soon, it became

apparent that one of the biggest needs that people living on Entoto Mountain faced was the need for a consistent

source of income. It was in response to this perceived need that the Outreach’s

income-generation program was begun. Noonday Collection promotes the beautiful work of these men and women by selling pieces exclusively designed by Raven + Lily, and handmade by the men and women of Entoto who are seeing their lives restored.

{ how it’s made }

upcycled artillery jewelryIn the mountains of Northern Ethiopia, farmers supply bead makers with artillery shells (from former war conflicts) that are found on their lands. Through traditional techniques passed down for generations, the village artisans melt these shells down to produce handmade, delicate beads. The beads go through several stages to achieve the final polished look, and then they are sent to the women at Entoto Mountain, who then create the jewelry you now wear. The Entoto Mountain is a place where those suffering with HIV/AIDS (ostracized by their family and society due to prevailing stigmas) come because they believe there is “holy water” that might cure them of their disease. Most women are uneducated about their disease and resort to begging in order to survive.

sandalsSeriously? 50 sandals in one and we aren’t exaggerating. Wrap them, strap them, flip flop them. Sseko Designs hires recent secondary school graduates for the nine month period after high school and before university to live and work together, while earning money that will go directly towards their university education. However, these women will not make sandals forever. They will go on to be doctors, lawyers, politicians, writers and teachers that will bring change and unification to a country divided and ravished by a 22 year-long war.

Noonday Collection began in the fall of 2010 when Jessica Honegger held her first trunk show as a means to raise money for her Rwandan son’s adoption. The style and purpose of the products drew an overwhelming response – and with that, Noonday Collection was born. After having lived in many resource poor areas of the world, Jessica always dreamed of creating entrepreneurial opportunities for people where she had lived. As the story of Noonday spread, other like-minded women wanted to start Noonday businesses in their own communities, and soon the Ambassador opportunity launched. Within months, trunk shows were taking place across the US. Jessica soon partnered with Travis Wilson, an old friend she had met on one of her trips to Africa several years before. Travis was the head of an African microfinance institution that provided business loans to women in rural villages as a means to alleviate poverty through entrepreneurship. Seeing the many lives changed, he envisioned one day owning a business in the US that would make a similar social impact. After several years in the corporate world, Travis saw Noonday as the realization of that vision.

Together with the Noonday Ambassadors across the country, Jessica and Travis hope to offer you an opportunity to be a voice for the vulnerable and to use your purchasing power to create change in the world. Your fashion sense can now put girls through school in Rwanda, restore dignity to abandoned women in Ethiopia, and empower communities in Ecuador.

Host a Trunk ShowOur Noonday Collection is sold through trunk shows and our website by Noonday Collection Ambassadors. As a hostess, you have the opportunity to earn free accessories and provide work for artisans who need it. Open your home to your girlfriends and introduce them to Prossy, Jalia, Alma, and Fara (just to name a few). These artisans and small business owners handcraft distinct accessories, receive a living wage for their work, and allow our Noonday Ambassadors to fill your home with the latest style trends. For trunk shows with sales of at least $500, you can receive 10% of the sales in free products. You can also opt to host a trunk show as a fundraiser for a family who is adopting and then Noonday will make a cash donation valued at 10% of the qualifying trunk show’s sales. Your trunk show guest will enjoy the fun and beauty of shopping while creating a pathway out of poverty for families across the globe.
