Put the two together and you will have 15k of an outstanding adventure. Both are rated 3B. On Sunday, May 7, you will enjoy a completely different atmosphere as you walk through several parks along the French Broad River, which are favorites of Ashevillians for weekend walking and biking. Spring will be in full bloom and the trees leafing out. You have a choice of a 5k, 10k or 15k length. The 15k features a turnaround at the New Belgian Brewery famous for its Fat Tire beer which you can enjoy on a covered veranda overlooking the river and the Arts District. Mark your calendars now for two delightful walks May 6-7 in beautiful

Asheville, North Carolina. The walks will provide two distinct venues

for your walking enjoyment

The first, on Saturday, May 6, is at Warren Wilson College, a unique school

where students are required to do chores – yup, chores like mow the lawn, wait

on tables, harvest the crops and feed the livestock. While not an agricultural

school per se, it supplies many of the products used in the school. The 10k walk

includes a stroll through a small but picturesque campus, goes across an ornate

bridge connecting the two parts and passes an awesome chapel. Then it’s off

with wild flowers and migrating birds. The 5k offers a separate woods walk. Put

the two together and you will have 15k of an outstanding adventure. Both are rated

3B.

On Sunday, May 7, you will enjoy a completely different atmosphere as you

walk through several parks along the French Broad River, which are favorites of

Ashevillians for weekend walking and biking. Spring will be in full bloom and

the trees leafing out. You have a choice of a 5k, 10k or 15k length. The 15k features

Seasonal Dupont State Forest Walking Opportunities

What More Can You Ask For!

Magnificent waterfalls, secluded lakes, an old cemetery, easy

to follow trails/roads through an incredibly beautiful forested

area in North Carolina: Dupont State Forest outside Brevard

has something for everyone. On September 16, the Amblers

will walk both the falls and the lakes routes and even have a

BYO picnic. But you do not have to wait for September. The

walks have been sanctioned as Seasonal (walks that can be

done on your own or with others anytime dawn to dusk during

a 'season' -- in this case the season is April 1 through Decem-

ber 31.

This is how it works. Anyone who wishes to do the walk must register and sign a waiver just like any of our

walks. This includes Ambler credit walkers, Ambler free walkers, your friend or neighbor down the road

who would like to try it, your visiting family -- anyone. This can be done at a meeting, at a walk, even re-

ceived by email. You deliver the registrations to Judy Michele along with $3 for each credit walker (Ambler

members may use coupons). Judy will provide you a copy of the directions and map, even instructions on

how to get there and where to park -- and you go and have a wonderful time. Walkers will report (email easi-

est) when they have finished the walk and credit walkers will get their books stamped or receive insert cards

for Event, Distance and requested Special Programs (Lakes, Bridges, Trek with Trees). You can do the walks

once or many times at your leisure. Just notify Judy when finished.

For more info or to register and get started, contact Judy at [email protected] or 828-628-4343.

Patch Available for National Physical Fitness and Sports Month The AVA is offering the patch below to all participants of our Ambler May 6th

and 7th events at Warren Wilson and French Broad River walks. The patch will

be available for $3 and available on a first come first serve basis.

Cycle The Day Away On The Swamp Rabbit Trail

Spring is the most enjoyable season of the year in Lake Lure, and with the assistance of Ursula Hess to promote perfect

weather, we guarantee another fantastic Amblers Group Walk on 20 May in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village. By

the middle of May evidence of the “Party Rock Fire” which consumed our attention in November will be very difficult

to locate. The renovation at our Start Point, “The 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa” is complete and the results are fantastic -

the lobby is gorgeous, the Moose and Goose Lounge is completely reoriented with greater capacity, and the dining facili-

ties nicely reappointed. The dredging work along our Broad River Trail section in Morse Park will be completed - they

must be finished by 1 April (no foolin’) to avoid disturbing spawning fish. We should have our complete route available

for your Springtime enjoyment. The shops and facilities should be active and alive, the beach may be open - in several

recent years it has been opened for a “trial run” the weekend prior to the Memorial Day Holiday festivities - restaurants

will be cookin’, just for you, the ice cream shops will be serving in cones and cups, the gift shops in Chimney Rock Vil-

lage will be catering to your specific desires, and the new Hickory Nut Gorge Craft Brewery along the banks of the

Rocky Broad River in Chimney Rock will open after the walk and will be serving their local specialties (they also serve

a limited food menu and wine for those who are not “keen on beer.”) Since one of the ice cream shops - The Rocking

Leprechaun - is near the point where we “turn toward home” after viewing Hickory Nut Falls, it will be fun to allow

those who would like to stop to enjoy a cone to do so. Amblers who do not wish to stop, will be able to continue the

walk with a guide, and those who do stop may continue after the interlude to complete the walk as a second group.

If there is sufficient interest to take a group tour of the lake from the Marina, contact Jim Walters

(([email protected] (Subject: AMBLERS TOUR OF THE LAKE), or (828) 625-9456)) and we will charter an

Amblers tour - just for you!

“Step-Off” is promptly at 9AM at the Start Point, and there will be both five and ten kilometer route options. The five

kilometer stroll does not visit Chimney Rock Village, but does cross and re-cross The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge,

On Thursday, May 11, we will welcome Spring by biking the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Travelers Rest. We'll

meet at the start Point, Sundrift Adventures, at 9:15 AM to get our bikes (for those who need one) and kick off

down the trail at 10 AM to Greenville and back.

It’s along the old Swamp Rabbit Railroad and is paved all the way with no steep parts although its uphill com-

ing back. The flowers should be in full bloom and the trees in full bud. There is a 25 and 32 KM option. The

32 takes you all the way to Reedy River Falls Park in Greenville with its spectacular view of the falls and sus-

pension bridge. There is a very nice family style grocery store which serves outstanding lunches that you can

stop at on the way back. It's a good idea to reserve a bike at Sundrift before you arrive.

Directions: Sundrift Adventures, 1 Center Street, Travelers Rest, 864-834-3019. Take I-26 south and merge

right onto US25 at Exit 54. Go approx. 25 miles and turn right on SC-276 (North Pointsett). Stay right at "Y"

with South Pointsett. Sundrift will be at the corner of N. Pointsett and S. Main St. Park behind building.
