On the cover is a representative from each school participating in this section, spread across the different sports. Clockwise from top left are golf’s D.J. Matthews of Crossroads Christian, softball’s Kaylan Hoyle of Southern Vance, baseball’s Zach Pegram of Northern Vance, soccer’s Cat Pittard of J.F. Webb, lacrosse’s Troy Bickel of Kerr-Vance and track’s Rageane Watson of Warren County.

The Dispatch extends his appreciation to the athletics directors and staff of the area high schools for participating in this year’s Spring Sports Preview.

Two pairs of siblings should create some added depth for a Warren County program seeking its fifth consecutive state playoff appearance.

The Eagles picked up Northern Vance transfers Kiara Alston, a senior, and sophomore sister Kiana, and welcome twin freshmen Kelly and Samantha Norwood.

They’ll join a set of returning junior twins, Kassie and Kelsie Clary.

Kassie Clary returns on the mound having worked plenty of innings behind graduated Jen-nifer Quick.

“She’s got a nice fastball, pretty good speed on that,” said Warren County assistant coach Hurley Moss. “She’s got a nice changeup. Screwball, she’s work-ing on it — but it works.”

Kelly Norwood, a lefty, will also see pitching time.

St. Andrews University recruit Brooke Sikes is back at catcher,

leading off the batting order. She’ll do so with power, Moss said.

“She’s real excited this being her last year of high school ball,” said the Eagle coach. “I expect a stellar performance out of her.”

Courtney Macklin and Mi-kayla Hargrove join Sikes and Kiara Alston in the senior class.

Macklin lines up in the out-field and shortstop and Hargrove will play the infield.

Kiara and Kiana Alston and Kelsie Clary make up the

outfield. “They’re going to help out a

whole lot,” Moss said of the Al-stons. “Both of them have good power, they hit real well.”

Warren County lost most of its infield from a season ago. Kelly Norwood and Samantha Norwood are candidates on the corners at first and third base, respectively.

Success will be measured in wins and losses under new J.F. Webb coach CeCe Duke.

Duke takes the reigns of the program from a guy, Jon Russell, who had that down pat last sea-son. The former Northern Vance coach spent one year at Webb, leading the Warriors to their first fastpitch conference title in school history.

Russell moved on to take the athletic director position at South-ern Alamance and now Duke is looking to continue the winning ways.

“I do look at the wins and losses,” Dukes said of gauging success.

The 2004 South Granville grad-uate knows a thing or two about winning, having played in the Vikings’ proud softball program.

Duke still plays competitively. Her Diamond Magic slow-pitch

team has won national and state titles in three different softball federations.

She should get her share of wins at Webb this season. Five seniors are gone, but the Warriors have plenty of talent returning, led by senior Kali Puckett, a 2012 3-A all-state selection.

Puckett hit .481 with 15 RBI and nine stolen bases last season. Sophomore center fielder Ellen Blevins led the team with a .500 batting average. Hayes Moss hit

clean-up, batting .418 with 31 RBI and 17 stolen bases.

The big question mark will be at pitcher. Webb must replace last season’s Carolina Conference Player of the Year, Morgan Davis, also an all-state selection.

Junior Bre Lewis is expected to get the nod as the starter with senior Chloe Norton slated as the backup. They’ll be caught by junior Di-Asia Paschall.

First baseman Victoria Hughes rounds out the seniors. Her

classmate, Puckett, is on second with junior Brooke Wheeler at shortstop and Norton at third.

Duke said it’s going to take some time for Webb to reach the level of success South Granville has enjoyed, but she has noticed a growing interest in softball in the northern part of the county.

Repeat as conference champion and the passion is likely to keep spreading.

Second-year coach Brittany Rob-inson has already instructed her team not to count wins and losses this year.

Northern Vance lost three of its top five hitters along with ace pitcher Rebekah Edwards from the 2012 team that finished third in the 3-A Carolina Conference, exiting the state playoffs in the first round.

The Vikings have seven total players to replace.

“It’s all about me trying to teach them new things that they don’t know and them teaching each other,” said Robinson.

Kara Reese, Avery Allen and Sameal Young comprise the Vikings’ senior class.

Robinson will rely heavily on Reese, a catcher and first baseman, and junior pitcher/catcher Jesse Edwards.

“I’m looking for them to step up, not just playing-wise, but also to try and help the younger ones along and try to share their experience,” said Robinson. “Obviously we need

them to do extremely well in order for us to be successful. Not just pitching and catching, but hitting.”

Edwards and Katie McAllister will both spend time on the mound.

“We don’t expect her to strike everybody out every game,” Robin-son said of Edwards. “We just need her to throw strikes and not walk people to put extra pressure on the defense.”

Robinson expects junior Mel’leeah Robinson, a first baseman and outfielder, to show improvement after impressing as a role player last season.

Annika Alicarde leads a fresh-man class of four and will likely start at shortstop or second base.

Robinson learned in her first season that beating crosstown rival Southern is of the utmost impor-tance to Viking fans. Northern did that in 2012, winning both meetings.

“Hopefully we’ll keep the streak alive this year,” said Robinson. “Hopefully.”

Southern Vance has only two seniors, pitcher Kaylan Hoyle and Harley Owen, but returns a dynamite junior class of five and a potential star freshman in Brittany West.

“They’re experienced,” said fourth-year coach Leann Harrell. “This is the year.”

Southern was in rebuilding mode a season ago, needing to replace eight seniors. The Raiders still earned a state playoff berth, upsetting top-seeded Union Pines before second-round elimination.

Southern features eight players that were on the 2012 Henderson/Vance 16-and-under team that reached the Babe Ruth World Series, including juniors Kiyanna Kearney (third base), Mikayla Sellers (center field), Rashyda Burwell (shortstop), Megan Hight (catcher), and Allyson Dunn (outfield).

“They’ve all been playing together for years,” said Harrell. “They have lots of expe-rience. They know each other. They know how to talk to each other. They just click really well and they’re a great group of girls.”

Harrell expects Hoyle to be the ace with West waiting in the wings.

“She has been setting an example throughout the offseason,” Harrell said of Hoyle, “and she has been practicing her pitching for probably the last three or four months three to four times a week.

“She’s stepped up showing that she wants it this year.”

West will back up Hight at catcher in addi-tion to fielding first base.

Sophomore Heather Satterwhite is getting a crack at second base and Bree Simmons is moving to the outfield.

West often hit third in the Henderson/Vance lineup behind Kearney and Hoyle. Harrell sees a similar order for the Raiders with Hight, Burwell and Sellers to follow.

“She has a lot of knowledge of the game,” Harrell said of West. “She thinks fast. She’s an incredible athlete. I think she’s going to be a big asset to the team this year.”

Daily Dispatch fileSouthern Vance junior Emerald Hayes finished eighth in the 3-A state triple jump in 2012 and qualified for both the state triple jump and long jump as a freshman.

BY KELLEN HOLTZMANDISPATCH STAFF

Southern Vance’s Emerald Hayes and Jaquez Bullock have put in the offseason work, leaving Raider coach Shannon Allen confident the two juniors will contend for 3-A state track and field titles.

At last year’s state meet, Hayes finished eighth in the triple jump and Bullock was ninth in the shot put.

Allen said both of have been working hard in the offseason.

Bullock didn’t play basketball this winter, opting for the weight room instead.

“He’s been in the weight room the whole time,” said Allen. “And this year, he’s really working on his tech-nique. I’m almost confident with the work he’s put in, he’ll put up better num-bers.”

Allen expects three-sport athlete Reggie Hunter to have a big season in the 100- and 200-meter races.

“He’s a hard worker,” said Allen. “Of course, he’s naturally talented in addition to him being a workhorse.”

Xavier Gregory won the conference title in discus last season and has his sights set on making the state championships.

Deja Hicks was one of the top throwers in the league a season ago and Allen ex-pects more of the same.

The Raiders aren’t the only team in town with returning talent. The Northern boys have plenty of it, led by defending Caro-lina Conference runner of the year Tyrrick Bullock, who earned the honor as a freshman.

Bullock was unbeaten in the 100 and 200 and anchored the 100 and 200 relays. The 200 squad just missed out on a state championship berth.

Coach Wilton Baskett must replace one runner from both the 100 and 200 teams.

Vincent Ragland was the conference champion in the 110 high hurdles last season.

Baskett recruited Scott Hamrick from the basket-ball program to run middle and long distances. Sopho-more Khaled Alachmali should also help in long distance. He’s been run-ning four miles a day since school started, Baskett said.

“The key for me would be to figure out how to spread them out far away enough from each other where we can get the points,” said Baskett.

Baskett also welcomes freshmen James Alexander, a conference champion high jumper in middle school, and hurdler Jeffrey Jones.

The Viking coach said Kechae Parker and Jazmine Haywood should be good runners for the girls.

Haywood will anchor both the 100 and 200 re-lays. She’ll also compete in

the long jump, where she qualified for the regionals as a freshman.

Senior sprinter Rageane Watson leads the Warren County girls. A four-year member of the program, she’s returning from an in-jury that kept her sidelined much of last season.

“We just hope that she’s going to bring senior lead-ership to the team to keep

us steady,” said Eagle girls coach Morton Jones.

Starbesha Satterwhite qualified for the regional last season as a freshman high jumper.

Jones added that he has some promising new ath-letes in the field events.

Coach Terrence McCor-mick has high hopes for the boys team.

“Whole bunch of

athletes,” he said. “We’re stacked this year. I’m looking at at least getting second place in the confer-ence this year.”

The Eagles were third last season in the Northern Carolina Conference, usu-ally controlled by Bunn.

Junior Jaquan Jones is a threat to return to the regionals. He sprints and competes in the high jump

and long jump. Jones, Lorenzo Hawkins,

Brian Hardy and Ronald Kennerly form a dynamic 100 relay team.

John Sidberry leads the boys throwers and bas-ketball players A.J. Alston and Charlie Williams look strong in the high jump.

J.F. Webb was the only area team to earn a postseason berth a season ago.

The Warriors have nearly an entire back line and goalkeeper to replace but return one of the top strikeforces in the region in senior Ashton Allen and sophomore Abbey Smith.

Webb coach Allie Urbanski said the dedication of Allen and Smith, who were each named all-region last year, make them stand out.

“They really, truly love the game,” said Urbanski. “I think the way they play is reflective of that. Abbey and Ashton are just beautiful to watch. They’re very smart, very collected all the time.”

Smith plays right back with her club team. Her versatility brings an added dynamic.

The Warriors could use the defensive as-sistance. Senior right back Cat Pittard is the only returner. She’ll lead the inexperienced back line in front of freshman goalie Carla Pike.

“She teaches in practice,” Urbanski said of Pittard. “She’ll pull girls aside and show them the proper technique, the proper stance. As a coach I can’t be everywhere and with my senior class, I feel like I have four other coaches.”

Stephanie Moyer (left midfielder) and Sarah Graham (center midfielder) are the Warriors’ other seniors.

Webb swept both Northern and Southern Vance last season en route to a third-place conference finish.

Northern hopes to repeat the success of the Vikings boys team, which reached the state playoffs for the first time since 2007.

But coach Razvan Tegean, entering his second season, isn’t making any compari-sons.

“It’s hard to expect them to do the same thing or ask them (to),” he said. “I hope they’re going to use that as an example of hard work being able to take you some-where.”

Still, the playoffs are a goal for Northern, which features seven seniors.

“Why not?” Tegean said. “But it’s not go-ing to be easy. It’s going to be very hard.”

Northern has experience in every area of the field. Senior Tanaua White is back in goal behind classmate and sweeper Kristin Long.

“She did a real good job last year so I definitely expect her to have a big season,” Tegean said of White.

White and Long are joined in their class by Ashlyn Reams, Katlyn Reams, Kaitlyn Moody, Logan Brinker and Gabby Mat-thews.

Ashlyn Reams and Katlyn Reams play in the middle with Brinker and Moody assum-ing roles in the midfield and at striker beside Matthews.

Tegean said freshman Alyson Moseley is a candidate to pair with Matthews at the top.

Northern’s only two conference wins in 2012 were over crosstown rival Southern.

The Raiders have a new coach in Brande-lyn Breinig. The Annapolis, Md. native aims to build a program the school can be proud.

Breinig, a science teacher at Southern, inherits two seniors, fullback Leah Woodlief and striker Crystal Puga.

Breinig said ball skills and passing have been the focus of early practices.

“Our goals are to work on our passing, play as a team,” she said. “We have a lot of individual players, but we’re having a hard time putting everybody together.”

Diana Renteral will play alongside Puga up top.

Sarah Stanton and Brianna Escobar play outside of Tanya Martinez and Elizabeth Clayborne in the midfield.

Clayborne and stopper Nikki Henderson were all-conference honorable mention last season.

Jessica Solomon patrols the back line at sweeper with Kimbre Archer joining Wood-lief at the other fullback spot. They’ll play in front of goalkeeper Mary Key Mendoza.

Injuries were an issue before the start

of Kerr-Vance’s 2012 campaign and they continued to plague the Spartans throughout a season in which the team struggled to find wins.

Catherine Kilian and Rebecca Ross were injured before the season even began and never took the field. Meredith Freeman and goalkeeper Jessica Darnell followed suit, missing multiple games.

All four are expected to be back and healthy.

Center midfielder Shannon Ayscue was named all-conference honorable mention last year. She and forward Isabelle Goodwin join Kilian, Darnell and Freeman in the senior class.

KVA coach Amy Johnson described Ayscue as a workhorse who puts everything together in the middle of the attack.

Ross joins Ayscue in the middle. Kilian, Goodwin and Bryles Cutts also play in the Spartans’ offensive third.

Freeman, a right back, leads a back line that includes returners Price Wester and Cassidy Tucker.

Add in Bailee Tippett, who got valuable ex-perience when Freeman went down, and KVA looks strong defensively, powered by Darnell and sophomore Shannon Cash in net.

Cash spent time as the varsity and JV

starter a season ago, replacing Darnell after she was sidelined by a concussion.

“Either one I feel great with having in the goal,” said Johnson.

Around the corner at Crossroads Chris-tian, the Colts are adjusting to an exodus of seniors.

Coach Joshua Bogle has four returning high school players led by senior midfielders Gabby Ortiz and Corey Choplin.

“I’m actually pretty excited about this season,” said Bogle. “I think we’re finally moving in the right direction. Last year was pretty rough starting off, but we finished in a good place last year.”

Defender Ali Arnold is back after missing last season with an injury.

Bogle anticipates moving junior Caroline May from midfield to forward and will be relied upon heavily for scoring.

The experience isn’t there, but the Colts coach likes the eagerness of the middle school team that often stays behind to practice with the varsity, just to get better, Bogle said.

“As long as they have that kind of attitude, we’ll definitely keep moving forward,” said Bogle.

Northern Vance senior Ethan Byrom is

competing for the top seed with two other

Vikings.

Daily Dispatch file

BY KELLEN HOLTZMANDISPATCH STAFF

Numbers are not a problem at Northern Vance.

The Vikings are loaded with 18 players and almost everybody is back from last season.

“This is the best team I’ve ever had,” said Vikings’ head coach Jeff Arthurs.

The best Arthurs has had still may only be good enough for third place, but that’s the reality Tri-County area tennis coaches have come to accept.

Cardinal Gibbons is the defending 3-A state champion and Chapel Hill advanced three rounds into the 2012 tourney before being eliminated by Gibbons.

“We could actually give Chapel Hill a run,”

said Arthurs. “I think.”Arthurs has a good mix of seasoned veter-

ans and new players. The seniors are Ethan Byrom, Sam Long,

Barrett Johnson, Dylan Grissom, Wagd Hauter and Blake Newman. Byrom, Long and Johnson are the likely top three singles seeds.

“Great competitors, great athletes, lots of desire,” said Arthurs. “They’re fun to work with, great leaders.”

J.F. Webb coach Will Darden has no seniors in Oxford. He has nine players led by juniors William Gillespie and Hunter Wil-liams and sophomores Dillon Clayton, Bret Pienkosz and Matthew Ayers.

“The challenge for us is that on any given night in a season, we’re playing a potential state champion,” said Darden. “That’s tough. But we embrace the challenge.”

Darden said his top four are close in talent and will likely alternate at the top seed.

Torrey Nowell is in his first season at Southern Vance.

Nowell is also Southern’s varsity boys basketball coach and served as an assistant coach on the football team.

A couple of Raider football players, Cam-eron Evans and Deon Smith, have joined the tennis team. Nowell hopes they can use the sport for added agility in the fall.

Nowell expects Johnny Hawkins and sophomore Will Pernell to be strong players.

“As long as the guys are working hard and playing to the best of their abilities, you know I’ll be happy,” said Nowell.

Warren County coach David Keesee has four returning players in Christopher Ford, Bryan Bender, Cody Barnes and John Aguas.

“They’re pretty close in skill level,” Keesee said of sorting out the top seeds, “so depending on how challenge matches go, it should be competitive, which is good.”

Keesee said freshman Austin Bender has shown promise and he expects nothing short of finishing in the top half of the 2-A North-ern Carolina Conference.

“If we didn’t finish in the top half, it would be a letdown,” said Keesee. “If we did finish in the top spot it would be nice, but no less than the top three.”

Keesee said it’s not all bad the Eagles have no seniors.

“This year is going to be better, but next

year we should be really solid,” Keesee said.Numbers are a problem at Kerr-Vance,

where the five-man Spartans will be playing shorthanded if no players are added.

“Our goals as a team right now have changed to just trying to win a match,” said KVA coach Dave Donaldson. “Hopefully we’ll win a couple of matches this year.”

Donaldson has three returners in Taylor Abbott, Will Parish and Daniel Adkins.

Abbott is the highest-seeded returner from last season, having played in the five-spot.

The other two Spartans are seventh-grad-ers, not the best recipe for competing in the 2-A Eastern Plains Independent Conference, one of the top tennis leagues in the private school ranks.

“I don’t know what it’s going to take to rebuild a program, but that’s where we are right now,” said Donaldson. “We’re rebuild-ing, every day we’re trying to recruit.”

“We’re just try to maintain a positive attitude,” added Donaldson, “and just try to keep getting better.”

Daily Dispatch fileSenior Wyatt Evans will pitch and play shortstop for Kerr-Vance .

Daily Dispatch fileKerr-Vance’s Troy Bickel, a center midfielder with a scholarship offer from Division II Belmont Abbey College, hopes to trigger the Spartans into even more recognition from around the state.

BY KELLEN HOLTZMANDISPATCH STAFF

Todd Wilkerson’s Kerr-Vance team suc-cessfully battled through growing pains a season ago, sneaking into the 2-A state tournament field after a 6-11 season.

Not bad for a squad that replaced eight seniors, including two Division I recruits and a junior college player, from a program that had made three consecutive state championship series appearances.

“I thought that was a big accomplish-ment being as young as we were last year,” said Wilkerson, entering his second season as head coach.

The Spartans often started four eighth-graders last season and lost one senior to graduation, Dylan Marshburn, the staff ace and a middle infielder.

“I thought we did pretty good for being such a young team. We’re still going to be young this year,” said Wilkerson. “When you have four or five ninth-graders start-ing, it’s tough. But I think we’ll surprise some people this year.”

Wyatt Evans is the only remaining start-er from the 2011 2-A state runner-up team. He’ll lead off, play shortstop and pitch.

Wilkerson said Evans has received in-terest from college programs and is being recruited as a fielder.

Evans is joined in the senior class by Tyson Carrier and Jacob Bowen. Those three will lead KVA’s pitching staff.

“If their pitching is pretty strong, we’ll do pretty well,” said Wilkerson.

“Both (Carrier and Bowen) showed good promise pitching last year,” added Wilkerson. “They got a lot of experience last year and maybe it’ll carry over into this year.”

Wilkerson is also looking to get some innings out of freshmen Daniel Wilkerson and Dustin Smith.

The Spartan coach said every fielding position is always up for grabs.

Smith and Adam Medlin are likely to play in the outfield along with junior Pierce Tooley. Medlin missed most of last season with an injury and Todd Wilkerson is expecting big things out of the sophomore this season.

Freshman Lane Humphries is back after spending his eighth-grade season behind the plate.

Bowen spent time at first base in 2012 with Daniel Wilkerson starting at second and freshman Channie Renn got a number of innings at third base a season ago.

Kerr-Vance and J.F. Webb are each looking to take the next step in high school lacrosse.

Both young programs have gained credibility around the state. Now it’s time to leap into the post-season.

KVA, entering its third season, narrowly missed a N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state tournament bid in 2012. Webb didn’t miss the N.C. High School Athletic As-sociation state playoffs by much, finishing 8-9 overall and third in league play.

“Our goal this year is to improve upon that,” said coach David Farabee, who started the Warrior pro-gram in 2010, “see if we can move up, which is a realistic possibility because of our schedule. We’re at the point where we’ll play most of our games against teams that we could beat or they could beat us. Competitive games and that’s good.”

KVA coach Scott Burnette feels the same about his fixtures and the Spartans are playing more games than ever.

“With our schedule, real-istically, we could be 4-14 or 14-4,” said Burnette. “If we play up to our capabilities, I think we have a chance of making the state tourna-ment.”

Neither the private nor public school lacrosse postseason tournaments are

divided into classifications based on student enroll-ment numbers. That leaves KVA and Webb competing against schools from the state’s most populous areas, where lacrosse is rapidly growing.

Each school in the 2012 NCISAA state tourney field was from the Triangle, Triad, Charlotte, Wilmington or Asheville areas. The 2012 NCHSAA playoff bracket had a similar breakdown, with only a few rural schools represented.

“We’ve earned a lot of respect across the state,” said Burnette. “Some of the higher-ranked teams in the state have called us about playing them this year.”

“We’re still growing,” Farabee added. “I think, however, other teams look at us and say Webb is no longer a team that you know you will beat.”

KVA and Webb both feature players that will have opportunities to play on the next level.

The Spartans have Troy Bickel, a center midfielder with a scholarship offer from Division II Belmont Abbey College.

“He’s a bull on the field,” said Burnette. “He can bring the ball up the field and his stick skills are so good that he can penetrate the defense and either get off a good shot or draw so many defenders he can give it up for an easy goal.”

Rufus Terry is a returning second team all-state long-stick midfielder for Webb.

Farabee said Terry hasn’t decided where he will play next season.

“He’s a tremendous young man and a great, great player,” said the Webb coach. “He’ll play on offense for us as well because we need him in there as much as we can get him.”

Christian Tilley has twice been selected an all-conference goalie for Webb, which has around 40 players on varsity and JV combined. Attacker Antonio Jones was also named all-conference last season, as was Cedric Spence, who leads an experi-enced group of defensemen.

James Averette anchors the defense of the Spartans, which lost Parkins Davis to injury for the season.

Behind them is fresh-man goalie Jordan Smith, a third-year member of the program.

All of KVA’s attackers are back, including Luke Pegram, Franklin Irvin and Sam Fuquay. Soccer stand-out Darren Doyle adds blaz-ing speed to the experienced group.

“If he had one more year with us, he’d be getting a lacrosse scholarship,” Bur-nette said of Doyle. “He’s so fast and his stick skills have unbelievably increased each practice.”

Daily Dispatch fileSammy Sizemore (1), Andrew Watson and Beau Smith make up the middle infielders for J.F. Webb this season. Sizemore could also see some time in the outfield for the Warriors.

Daily Dispatch fileWarren County’s Darian Sellers makes a tag at second base against Southern Vance last season at the Louisburg Easter Tournament. Sellers can play anywhere on the field including pitcher.

BY KELLEN HOLTZMANDISPATCH STAFF

Randy Martin is leading Warren County into a new baseball era and he’s inheriting a team with a blend of youth and experi-ence.

Martin, succeeding Derek Alston, coached in the Warren County recre-ation league in recent years. Last year, he helped out with the Warren County Middle School team.

“We’ve got a good group of guys here, a

lot of younger kids,” said Martin. The Eagles missed out on the state

playoffs last season. Martin’s goal is to get back, and finish in the top of the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference, which was won by Bunn in 2012.

The big bats belong to senior catcher Colby Ryder and classmate Hayden Sul-livan, who will play shortstop and likely be the ace of the pitching staff.

“They swing the bat hard,” Martin said. “I don’t know what they’ll do in a game, but I know in practice, they swing it

mighty hard.”Darian Sellers and Pete Johnson, who

fit in the top two spots, join Ryder and Sullivan in the top half of the order. Senior first baseman John Sidberry could hit fifth.

Sellers, a junior, can play all over the field and likely will. Martin has him pegged as the starting second baseman for now.

“He can play anywhere,” said Martin. “He hustles all the time. And he’s a good hitter.”

Sellers will also pitch, along with Tyler

Thompson, Michael Leonard and possibly Ryder.

Thompson will play middle infield and outfield, Sidberry and Joshua Moss will rotate at first with Johnson manning the hot corner.

Leonard, Clyde Jones, Derke Wortham, Antonio Thompson, Thomas McCaffity, and Ethan Frazier round out the outfield-ers.

When Mike Carroll met with his J.F. Webb players in October, he asked them what their goals were for the upcoming season.

He got a few too many “make the state playoffs” responses for his liking.

“I’m not satisfied with just making the playoffs,” said Carroll, a longtime assistant embarking on his first season as head coach.

Carroll told his team to aim for a con-ference title, something that has eluded Warrior baseball for 20-plus years.

The 1994 Webb graduate and Barton baseball alum succeeds Jeff Tate, who resurrected a program that was 34-85 in the five years before his arrival. Under Tate, another Barton product, the Warriors made five state playoff appear-

ances in seven seasons. Carroll had been a Webb assistant

coach for eight seasons. “It’s what I set out to do,” Carroll

said of becoming head coach. “It’s like I’m living a dream.”

He said he couldn’t have asked for a better year to take over because of a strong senior class of six.

Webb does have some reshaping to do. The Warriors lost four pitchers from last season. Three graduated and Zach Harris is out for the year with an injury.

Sophomore hurler Kaleb Fisher is back after an impressive rookie season. Seniors Andrew Watson, David Watson and Matt Hobgood are also in the pitch-ing mix along with junior Michael Dalton.

The Watson cousins will each spend time behind the plate.

Chad Frazier will man first base along with Brad Mize, who Carroll

hopes will return from injury in April. Andrew Watson, Sammy Sizemore

and Beau Smith make up the middle infield corps with Hobgood and Dalton on third base.

Gone from the outfield is Ty Wom-ack, the reigning all-area player of the year.

“We’re not looking to replace him, we just need somebody with the same mentality,” said Carroll. “He would run through a brick wall for you.”

Sizemore, Ethan Bailey, Tyler Wil-liams, Josh Justice, Lane Dickerson and Bryan Smith will compete for outfield spots.

Hobgood is the lone returning all-conference player while Frazier and Fisher were both honorable mention.

Daily Dispatch fileSophomore Dustin Brummitt throws a warm-up pitch for Southern Vance last season. Brummitt primarily plays shortstop and is looking for an improved season at the plate.

Daily Dispatch fileSenior Barry Purnell provides an important glove, bat and arm for a Northern Vance team eyeing a return to the 3-A state playoffs.

BY KELLEN HOLTZMANDISPATCH STAFF

Northern Vance’s six-member senior class has improved every season since they impressed as freshmen in 2010.

Vikings’ head coach Benji Nelson be-lieves the talented group hasn’t reached its potential.

Northern made the state playoffs last season for the first time since 2002, letting a close first-round game at top-seeded Gray’s Creek slip away.

“This is their year to really do some-thing special,” said Nelson. “The potential is there. The mindset just has to be there.”

Trey Stainback, Barry Purnell, Zach Pegram, Travon Scott, Thomas Abbott and Tyquan Bryant make up the senior class.

Shortstop Henry Raynor, one of the team’s most reliable hitters and best all-around players, graduated along with outfielder John Nelson.

Contending for a Carolina Conference title is not out of the question, Nelson said, but he’s not expecting teams in the competitive league to lay down for his veteran bunch.

“We have to earn everything. We have to play hard day in and day out,” said Nelson. “Yeah we want to make it back to the playoffs, but we also want to be one of those teams in the top three of the confer-ence instead of being middle of the pack like we’ve been these last couple of years.”

If the Vikings can get to the top, they’ll ride ace Nate Arrington there. The junior right-hander was 6-5 last season with an ERA of 2.10 to go along with 54 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched.

“He’s gotten taller. He’s thinned out a little bit,” said Nelson. “Nate’s been our top guy for the past couple of years. I don’t expect anything different.”

Pegram is the staff No. 2, followed by Purnell and Kevonte Hanks.

Nelson is feeling good about his batting order one through five. It’ll have plenty of motor at the top with Bryant leading off, followed by Scott and Purnell. Pegram and Stainback will hit in the power slots.

Abbott will replace Nelson in left field, joining the speedy Scott and Bryant.

Purnell, who swings left-handed, led the Vikings in RBI last season. He’ll play shortstop when he’s not on the mound.

Pegram will do a little bit of everything, playing third base and catcher in addition to pitching.

“I think he can handle it,” said Nelson. “Zach is one of our guys who leads this team and wants to win.”

Kale Boone and Tabrian Scott will play second base and Stainback and Arrington have first locked down. Stainback will also split time with Pegram behind the plate.

Southern Vance followed up a three-win campaign in 2011 with eight victories last season, including a Louis-burg Easter Tournament title and a third-place finish in the J.F. Webb Easter Tournament.

The Raiders didn’t win a 3-A Carolina Conference game in either season although the team was competitive last season, los-ing tight games with league leaders Chapel Hill and Cardinal Gibbons.

Seven players are gone from the 2012 squad and the Raiders have two seniors this season: utilityman Wes Collier and outfielder Jamal Williams.

Tony McGhee oversaw the rebuilding project in 2011, his first season in charge. Two years of baby steps and a couple of doses of summer ball have yielded what the Southern coach believes is his best defensive club yet.

“We’re pretty solid at just about every position defensively, especially in the infield,” said McGhee.

Sophomore shortstop Dustin Brummitt is the glue that holds that corps together.

The key to success, McGhee said, is pitching.

Junior Kyle Lawrence is the ace of a staff that could

go seven or eight deep and also includes Collier, Brummitt, Brandon Salmon, David Adcock and Scott Jackson.

Salmon, a sophomore southpaw, will also play first

base.Jackson, Williams and

freshman Chris Cruz are the outfielders.

“He’s going to help us,” McGhee said of Cruz. “Good speed, tracks the ball well,

runs the gaps pretty good.”McGhee is looking to

Brummitt, especially, to drive the gaps. He had a lackluster performance at the plate last season before an impressive summer.

“Dustin swung the bat well last summer,” said McGhee. “I mean he had an RBI every game. He hit three or four balls out.”

Lawrence pairs with Brummitt in the middle of

the order. McGhee added he’s expecting Williams and Salmon to provide some of-fensive punch.

Daily Dispatch fileKerr-Vance coach Dave Carrier called Spartan senior Daniel Burnette (above) one of the best golfers in the state.

BY KELLEN HOLTZMANDISPATCH STAFF

Kerr-Vance will tee off this season without Ben O’Geary for the first time since 2007.

The reigning NCISAA 2-A individual state champion is a Radford Highlander now. Brad Edwards is also gone from the KVA team that fin-ished fourth in the 2012 state tournament, but coach Dave Carrier says not to sleep on the Spartans just yet.

“We have a great tradition of golf at Kerr-Vance,” said Carrier. “I think people are expecting us to take a step back. I still think we have a lot of potential and could end up surprising some people and having a good year.”

Seniors Brandon Dick-erson and Daniel Burnette lead the way. Both have been in the program since the seventh grade.

“To me, they are two of the best golfers in the state,” said Carrier. “I expect them to lead us. I think by the end of March into April, they’ll be putting up some good scores.”

Carrier said freshman Joseph Burnette, a third-year Spartan golfer, could end up shooting in the 70s.

The KVA coach also expects Morgan Watkins to improve on an impressive 2012 season.

Jake Ruggles, a former Northern Vance golfer, joins the team from the lacrosse field and Reid Bridges and Jon Ross Holland round out the squad.

Carrier called the Eastern Plains Independent Confer-ence the best in the state and said the competition should be no different this season.

Down a classification, Crossroads Christian senior D.J. Matthews is shooting for a 1-A state title.

Matthews’ coach, Aaron Hale, says his improvement has been marked.

Playing throughout the summer and school year, Matthews is shooting in the mid-70s now.

Leading with four holes to play, Matthews finished second to the eventual 1-A state champion in the Caro-lina Christian Conference Tournament last season.

Hale hopes that experi-ence as well as his play in the 2012 state tourney will pay dividends.

“I think it’s realistic,” Hales said of a state title. “If he plays to his potential, he can do it. He can go low.”

Hale is also expecting im-provement from the overall team, which has two more members than last season.

Sarah Martin, Griffin Mar-tin, Will Nutt, Clarissa Gay, Noah Carlson and Colten Steffensen round out the squad.

The 3-A Carolina Confer-ence has two new coaches, but only one is new to the league.

Mike Rotolo is lead-ing Northern Vance after 21 years of coaching the Southern Vance team. He was previously the boys bas-ketball coach at Southern as well before taking a position as Vance-Granville men’s basketball head coach.

Glenn Garrison is the new man at Southern and John Hunt is back for another season at J.F. Webb.

Rotolo has one returner at Northern, Derrick Nelson, but said he has 10 interested in playing.

The Vikings had only three players in 2012, one short of the number re-quired to card a team score.

“It’s not a reloading thing, it’s a rebuilding thing,” said Rotolo.

Rotolo said Cardinal Gib-bons lost some players, but is still a force.

“They always have some-body in waiting,” he said. “I expect it will be the same way.”

Gibbons was followed in the standings by Chapel Hill, Webb and Orange. The top three teams earn postseason berths.

The Warriors have one veteran back from that regional qualifying team, Taylor Cook.

“If he works hard and progresses, I look for him to

finish at least in the top 10,” said Hunt. “He’s played golf his whole life, he knows the game. He knows what he has to do, he just has to go do it.”

The sophomore trio of Michael Hancock, Jacob Brewer and Zach Porterfield along with junior Michael Phillips and freshman Trenton Williams round out the team.

Half of Garrison’s eight players played a year ago, including sophomores Na-thaniel Elliott, Colin Rooker and Eric Hunt.

Garrison’s goal for the program is “to reach more kids that haven’t played before and expose them to the sport.”

So far, so good. Southern has two that are new to the sport and eight is the best turnout in several years, Gar-rison said.

Coach Sonny Peoples is back for his second sea-son at Warren County. He doesn’t have a lot of experi-enced golfers, but he does have players willing to learn.

“They take a lot of interest in it,” said Peoples. “I’ve seen a couple of kids — if they stuck with it, they could probably be good golfers.”

Roanoke Rapids High School transfer Reid Bolt, a junior, is the most seasoned of the group of five.

Peoples said his inexperi-enced bunch is responding well to coaching.

“They’ve got some potential,” he said. “If they stick with it, in a couple of years, they can probably be competitive.”
