HARRISTOWN – ForJenner Sales, attending localjob fairs means not onlyrecruiting for open positionsbut is also a means ofadvertisement for thecompany, which is tuckedaway outside of Decatur.“We attend a lot of the local

job fairs because of wherewe’re located; we’re out in thecountry in Harristown, and alot of people don’t know weexist,” said Jessie Smalley, human resources director for

Jenner Sales. “A lot ofpositions are available at ourfacility here, but people oftendon’t even know we’re here.So I try to attend even if wedon’t have immediateopenings, to advertise we’reout here.”

Jenner Sales is anapplication equipmentcompany, which sells

machines that apply fertilizerto crops. The companyprimarily works withcommercial fertilizer plants, though they have somedealings with local farmers.Jenner Sales employs about

60 people at its Harristownfacility and has job openingsoccasionally for positions likea shop technician, in theshipping department or forclerical work.Smalley said that some jobs

are harder to fill than others.“If it’s a shop technician

position, that is one of thehardest jobs to fill. I can run an

ad in three papers, and if Ihave 10 applicants, that isamazing,” she said. She saidshe isn’t sure of the reason, and added that the companydoesn’t typically expectapplicants to have experienceworking on commercialfertilizer machines. “If you’reable to fix your car, you’reprobably qualified enough forthe job. Most (of our shoptechnicians) are people whohave been in the auto repairindustry, and it’s not a hugetransition for them.”“But,” she added, “if it’s a

shipping job or an office job, I

get more applicants than I canalmost go through.”For those interested in

applying at Jenner Sales,Smalley was quick to notethan the company looks formotivated applicants with ahard-working and likeableattitude. The ability andwillingness to do the job wellis much more important thanany degrees, she said.“I’d tell them to be

DECATUR - In previous years, a jobapplicant could compile one resumeand cover letter and send it out tomany different companies during a jobsearch. This practice is changing today, said

Georganne Sadomytschenko, owner ofHuman Resources Inc., a humanresource consulting firm.“People are customizing each cover

letter to enhance the skills they havefor a specific position,” she said. “Yourresume and cover letter should beproperly packaged for each job. Knowwhat you’re selling and to whom;emphasize those skills.”According to MSN’s CareerIgniter,

companies use resumes as the basis

for the first cut when determining whoshould be invited into thescreening and interviewprocess. A resume determineswhether the applicant shouldbe considered, and you don’thave to be a perfect match forthe job description to beconsidered.Resume writing is one

of the basics of jobhunting, and somethingthat bringsfrustration tomany ofthose onthe

hunt. A resume should be easyto read, concise, free ofany grammar orpunctuation errorsand above all, should showcaseyour professionalstory in anengaging way.

“Don’tunderestimatethe time ittakes to put aresumetogether,”

Sadomytschenko

said. “You should always constantly beupdating your resume, looking at waysto make it look better, and capturingyour skills, experience and knowledgethat you obtain.”To begin a resume, you could look

online for examples, but try to stayaway from using a template, which canbe obvious to potential employers,Sadomytschenko said. Most schoolsoffer career planning services, whichinclude resume writing, and there is alot of material available online for help.Additionally, don’t forget to have yourresume reviewed and critiqued byothers.“It’s always a work in progress,”

Sadomytschenko said.If you’re out of a job and in the

process of job searching, treat it as a

Many men and women reach their 50s and60s and decide the adventure of a newchallenge is simply too hard to resist.Oftentimes, this new challenge comes in theform of a second career.

Though the United States Department ofLabor notes it's difficult to pinpoint howmanycareer changes the average worker undergoesduring his or her lifetime, career coachestypically say men and women will undergobetween three and seven career changesduring their lifetime. Of course, such estimatesno doubt include career changes at the onset ofa one's professional life, when many peopleare not precisely sure what they want to do fora living. For older workers, the uncertainty lies less

in what they want to do and more in if theycan pull it off. For those who have alreadydecided what they want to do, consider thefollowing tips to help ensure that dreambecomes a reality.

• Be patient. Aside from being qualified, themost important thing a person changingcareers can be is patient. A successful careerchange does not happen overnight. Somecareer changes might require returning toschool. Others might not require a new degreebut might require an established professionalstart from the bottom up. Whatever thesituation, it's best to remain patient. If yournew career is worth pursuing, be patientenough to see it through.

• Network. Networking is often seen as anopportunity to advance within your ownindustry. However, networking can be just asvaluable when changing careers. Peoplewithin your network might be able tointroduce you to new contacts outside of yourindustry. These contacts, even if they don'thave a job to offer, can often provide valuableinsight into the industry you're attempting toenter.

• Volunteer. If your second career is going tobe a complete 180 from your current field, itmight help to volunteer and gain someexperience before beginning a job search.Volunteering can prove beneficial in manyways. First and foremost, it providespotentially valuable experience you likelydon't have, and that experience may helpdown the road when you begin looking for afull-time position.

• Be flexible. In today's job market, the flexiblecandidates are more likely to be successful. When changing careers, be as flexible aspossible. Determine if relocation is a viableoption, and assess your financial situation todetermine how much financial flexibility youhave. Career changes often come at theexpense of a smaller salary. If your financialsituation does not allow for a reduction insalary, now might not be the right time tochange careers.

Successfully Transition to Your Second Career

DECATUR - The power ofpreparation is never more evidentthan for those who are competingwith dozens of other people inpursuit of a new job.At job fairs, preparing before

the actual fair could help youstand out among the competition.“Stay away from ‘what

positions do you have open?’”advised GeorganneSadomytschenko, owner ofHuman Resources Inc., a humanresource consulting firm.“Someone who is prepared isgoing to know who is going to bethere and research the company.”Sadomytschenko encouraged

job fair-goers to go online andresearch a company’s mission,

vision, culture, key qualities andcurrent job openings. Manycompanies publish their jobopenings and requirements online, she said.

“The reason you do this is soyou can see if the company isreally right for you, you can havegood, quality discussion with therepresentative at the table, andyou’re selling your strengths,” shesaid. “Oftentimes someone walksup and they say ‘well what do yougot open?’ Make sure you’reprepared to have that discussion.”According to the Illinois

WorkNet Center, job fair goersshould prepare answers to open-ended questions, such as “tell meabout yourself,” “how can youcontribute to our organization?”and “why do you want this job?”Even if a company doesn’t

have an opening in yourparticular field but you are stillinterested in potentially workingfor that company in the future, you should still make aconnection, Sadomytschenko said.“If they don’t have an

opening, you can still go to thebooth and promote yourself,” shesaid. “Know yourself and whoyou’re selling to. You want to havea competent discussion on whatyou could do for that company asa future employee.”There is a definite balance

between being assertive andoutgoing versus being tooaggressive, Sadomytschenko said.

Sell your positive qualities andget your point across, but don’tdominate the conversation or beoverly eager.“Know what you can do and

can bring to the table. Make sureyou can communicate that, andpractice the interview, whetherit’s practicing at home orpracticing with friends,”Sadomytschenko said.As for dress, professional

business dress is alwaysrecommended for a job fair – nojeans or tennis shoes.Don’t forget to have copies of

your resume on hand, but keep inmind that many companies nowonly accept resumes online.Websites can often be a great

resource for preparing for a jobfair and a job search in general. The Illinois WorkNet Center(illinoisworknet.com) offersinformation about setting goals, writing a resume and cover letter, preparing for an interview andmuch more.Sadomytschenko even

recommended going online tocoaching sites or job search siteslike YouTube.com,CareerBuilder.com, Indeed.comand Simplyhired.com andsearching for videos aboutpreparing for an interview or jobfair to pick up more tips or seeexamples of what to do and not doat career fairs.“I can’t stress enough that you

shouldn’t be walking up and onlyasking about openings,” she said.“You’re starting to build thatrelationship (with a company);being prepared is very helpful.”
