Helicopter tours and the Aloha

Beach Resort hotel personnel.

The opportunity to make the trip

to the “forbidden island” has been

one of our favorite adventures of

all time.

The extensive low level heli-

copter tour of the entire Ni′ihau

island was my favorite part of the

weekend.

The many hidden treasures of

Ni′ihau were quite the surprise.

Kauai lived up to it’s name, “the

Garden Isle”. The canyon, the falls,

the beaches, the scenery...it was

gorgeous. This is one trip, I would

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

Get ready to book your whale watch-

ing adventure in the coming winter

months with your ITT offi ce. The best

viewing months tend to be between

January and March. Although Lahaina

Maui hosts some of the best close-up

viewings, each island receives plenty

of the gentle giants in the respective

oceans.

To Hawaiians, the whale is a rep-

resentation of the Hawaiian God

Kanaloa - the God of animals in the

ocean.

Humpback whales (na kohola) are

found in all oceans, although they

generally prefer near shore and near-

island habitats for both feeding and

breeding.

The reason for the abundance of

North Pacifi c Humpback whales dur-

ing this time of year is that they mi-

grate to the Hawaiian Islands to calve

in the relatively warm and protected

waters.

The round-trip distance they travel

during this annual migration is ap-

proximately 4,000 miles, one of the

longest migration distances of any

animal species. Near the islands, the

whales devote most of their time to

mating and giving birth to their calves.

This also means that you have a re-

ally good chance to see some baby

whales too!

The bay in Lahaina offers the per-

fect environment for the whales due

to the natural triangle haven created

by the islands of Maui, Lanai and

Molokai.

While visiting the islands, kohola

have become renowned for their

various acrobatic displays. Look for

upcoming tours to Maui, Kauai/Niihau

and here on Oahu starting in January

2009.

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

Have you seen people that look

like they’re walking out on the

water lately? They’re actually stand-

ing on surfboards and paddling in

what has been somewhat of a revival

of the sport recently.

According to reports, the craze was

revived on the California coast and is

being taken seriously here too. Stand

up paddle boarders cruise the calm

waters just off shore or in bays and

can add to their fun by actually surfi ng

the waves too.

Stand up paddle boarding is done

on a large long board and according

to 15th Services own Teddy Fabella

who works as a lifeguard at Hickam

Harbor, the sport is popular as an

isq 4

Paddle Boarding

New at Outdoor Recreation

exercise regimen with paddlers using

it for regular workouts. The Harbor is

a perfect place to learn how to stand

up paddle board and Hickam Outdoor

Recreation can show you how.

On February 7, the Outdoor Recre-

ation staff is conducting two paddle

boarding classes, one at 10 a.m. and

another at 11 out at the Harbor. This is

a perfect chance to learn in the safety

of the harbor.

The cost is $20 per person and in-

cludes use of a long board and paddle

and the instruction out on the water.

Private lessons are also available and

you can register by calling 449-5215.

Don’t worry about falling off a few

times, it’s easy to get back on!

Mahalo Madness Trivia question of the day will win a

spectacular prize.

The 15th Services Squadron really cares about you

and says ‘Thank You’ in other ways that sometimes

aren’t as visible. Did you know that the profi ts from

Services facilities go right back into those facilities,

making them bigger and better able to serve you? It’s

true and here are some examples:

• More than $100K spent on special events such

as the 4th of July Beach Blast, Tops in Blue, sports

events such as Half marathon, Duathlon and Sports

Days, the Beach Bum Parade and Mahalo Fest.

• More than $35K in support of squadron social

functions, base-wide awards & promotion ceremonies,

change of commands, retirements, newcomers

orientations, hospitalizations and Warrior runs.

“We’re mad about you,” says Lt Col Timothy Telega,

Commander, 15th Services Squadron. “You’re the

reason we’re in business and we want to say ‘Thank

You’ for your patronage all last year. So for the entire

week of February 23-27, we’re giving you “Mahalo

Madness”, a wild and crazy ride of savings at all our

facilities, just for you.”

Don’t be surprised if Maddie the Menehune shows

up somewhere spreading the Madness with prizes and

giveaways . Maddie will often show up in the Services’

Holo Holo Trolley with some cohorts who will share

the ‘Mahalo Madness’ with you. In fact, Maddie will

be the engineer on the Madness Express Kiddie Train

offering free rides to the kids, photos with Maddie and

candy at the Hickam BX on February 21.

You’ll want to watch the countdown

to Mahalo Madness on your computer

screens as well as news alerts on

where Mahalo Madness specials

will be broadcast. Your email will

be tapped each day of the Mahalo

isq 16

March is National Craft Month

and the Hickam Arts & Crafts

Center is celebrating in a big

way. According to Ron Steiner,

Center Manager, “We’re going to

have several cool events and new

classes associated with our Na-

tional Craft Month celebration.”

On Friday, March 13, Arts &

Crafts presents Kids Craft Day and

while this is an auspicious day of

avoiding black cats, walking under

ladders and breaking a mirror, kids

can enjoy free crafts with their

parents starting at 1:13 p.m. in the

Arts & Crafts Gallery. Kids will also

receive 13% off all kids craft sup-

plies available in the Retail Store.

Then on Friday, March 20, Arts

& Crafts is conducting an Open

House event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is a family-friendly event with

free classes, make-n-take proj-

ects, demonstrations and a mini

craft fair. The hot dogs and soda

are on us so come out and enjoy a

day at the Arts & Crafts Center.

New classes available in the

Spring include Art Clay and Ad-

vanced Reed Basket Weaving. Art

Clay is an innovative new product

awaiting your creative clash of

inspiration. For all you artists wish-

ing to combine the ease of molding

clay with the love of silver’s shine,

this is the product for you. Enjoy

the fun and versatility of playing

with art clay with a twist…fi ring the

fi nished piece transforms it into a

valuable, pure silver treasure!

This soft and supple clay has

been mixed with fi ne silver powder.

It is actually a precious metal clay!

Create a shape you

desire, let it dry and the

fi re it in the kiln. After

cleaning it you’ll unveil

a shimmering work of

art in pure silver! Model-

ing has never been this

much fun.

The second new

class is Reed Basket

Weaving which will be

taught by one of the

Hawaiian Islands’ top

weavers. You’ll learn

new basket styles and

patterns each month and become

an accomplished weaver your-

self. To fi nd out more about these

classes or to sign up, contact the

Retail Sales Store for class dates

and times at 448-9907, Ext. 103.

As part of National Craft Month

and its Spring programs, the Arts &

Crafts Center hosts Scrapbooking

Marathons on the first Saturday

of January, February and March

and again on the third Friday of

each month.

These exciting ‘all-niters’ run

from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight and fea-

ture great networking, new ideas,

meet new friends and create great

memories in your books. There’s

food, fun and prizes too and the

Marathons are open to all active

duty, family members, DoD civil-

ians and retirees.

Did you know that the Hickam

Arts & Crafts Center Retail Sales

Store has one of the largest inven-

Working with wood is a time honored tradition.

There’s something about creating something in wood

with your own hands. And although the Hickam Wood

Shop is one of the premiere shops of its kind in PA-

CAF, it’s one of those facilities that seems to be easily

overlooked.

But don’t be fooled. The Hickam Wood Shop has

the know-how, equipment and space for all your fi ne

wood working projects from a simple box to up-scale

furniture. At the Wood Shop, you can learn new wood

working skills or sharpen old ones.

Wood working equip-

ment includes table saws,

panel saw, lathe, jointer,

planer, drill press, band

saw, fi nishing sander, ra-

dial arm saw, router and

miter chop saw plus all

the hand tools you’ll need

to complete your project.

Wood Shop staff members are available for consulta-

tion about your project or can lend a hand when you

need it.

The Shop also has a limited resale inventory of

hardwoods and plywoods for purchase. In addition,

the staff accepts custom orders for utility ware, signs,

gift items, fl ag boxes and plaques.

But how can I use this facility, you ask? The Hickam

Wood Shop is located on Vickers Avenue in Bldg 1029

and is just west of the PACAF Headquarters complex.

To use the facility and its maze of expert equipment,

you must fi rst take and pass a safety class. This class

will familiarize you with the equipment and how to use

it safely. The class is held each Saturday morning at

10 a.m. and the cost is $15.

“Woodworking is a blast,” said Sonya Stanchfi eld,

who has used the shop for repairing and refi nishing

antique furniture. “They have every tool I’ve ever

needed and the staff has been great in giving me

pointers on how to do things,” she concluded.

The Hickam Wood Shop is open Tuesday,

Wednesday and Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. and on

Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 449-

3592 for more information.
