Help, Understanding & Group Support HEART TO HEART Volume 1 Spring 2015 R yan was born in October 1998 to Alphonso and Phyllis Green. The Greens finally felt like their family was complete after years of trying to conceive. He was nothing short of a blessing to their little family. They faced many challenges with Ryan’s health, but they decided, as a couple, that no matter what the situation was, they were going to nurture, love and support their son. Alphonso and Phyllis turned to their faith, their family and their friends for encouragement and clarity during this difficult time in their lives. One of the hardest trials for them was the uncertainty of his diagnosis. The doctors could not give a clear diagnosis for Ryan’s situation, leaving the family with very little information. Thanks to the Air Force, the family moved to Hawaii. It wasn’t until meeting Dr. Pederson at Tripler Army Medical Center that Ryan was properly diagnosed with a Chromosome Disorder, Seizure Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Phyllis decided to stop working so she could better care for her son and dedicate her time to him. Since the age of 9, Ryan has suffered seizures that stop his heart and stall his breathing, leaving him tired for days. Because of his condition, Ryan has been on numerous medications for years. Despite the struggles and challenges, Phyllis says her son is a strong and loving person. She describes Ryan as “her little fighter,” just like his father. “HUGS is a warm inviting environment. It is truly a wonderful way to meet other families.” The Green family came to HUGS through the Tripler Army Medical Center. Since being referred, the family has attended HUGS Family Dinners, Celebration of Life and Holiday Events. Phyllis has expressed her joy and gratitude for this organization saying, “It’s a warm, inviting environment. It is truly a wonderful way to meet other families.” Today, Ryan is a happy, head strong, 16-year-old with a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. The Green family has been a wonderful addition to the HUGS ‘Ohana. They have encountered their fair share of turmoil, but knowing that they have their faith, their family, and HUGS, they know they are never alone. When asked to share a word of encouragement to other families, Phyllis says, “Don’t dwell on the situation and problems at hand.” “Love your child, because your child depends on you.” HUGS would like to send a big mahalo to the Green family for taking the time out of their busy schedule to share their story with all of us and for sharing the wonderful picture of their family. We are sending our positive thoughts and best wishes their way! HUGS Embraces the Green Family The Green Family
