STILL LIFE

SPRING EXHIBITION 2014

Visiting galleries, I see so few still life pieces. It seems that this is an outmoded subject matter. Popular with the Dutch artists in their heyday and in Paris at the turn of the twentieth century, the inti-macy of still life is so very different from the grand visions of landscape and abstract art.

The quiet (and potential prettiness) of still life doesn’t mean that it can’t be intriguing or meaningful. In this exhibition, we feature the work of three photographers who bring a painterly perspective to the subject matter.

Steve Cross’ photos are witty in the extreme, deliberately constructed from porcelain objects.

Ellen Denuto brings the sensibility of the Expressionists to the lushness of the Dutch masters.

Dorothy Shi starts with her travel experience to find the beauty in the everyday object. Her use of color and structure is almost abstract, yet is founded in the hard objects used everyday.

This is a small show but they are all gems - with the surprise of being photographs.
