Elective Procedures

● You must line up QUIETLY outside of your elective class at 11:25

● If you are late, you must have a note from your teacher as to why you are late

● Please go to the bathroom before electives begin

● Please do not enter the room until the teacher invites you in

● You should always be prepared by bringing a pencil and any materials needed

for the class

All students in 5th and 6th grades are required to take at least one class in each of the

Fine Arts areas. You will need to take a Spanish,

Drama, Music, and Art class at some point during this

time.

Trash to Treasure- Mrs. Tatum● Students in this course will learn how to create art from recycled

materials and discover ways to use the environment as inspiration!● We will “upcycle” everyday materials to convert waste and useless

products into new materials and works of art. ● Students will learn about contemporary artists who have created

innovative and amazing art using everyday trash. ● Students may create life- size paintings using bottle caps, turn

crushed cans into creative creatures, create gigantic jellyfish out of plastic bottles, and even make recycled art you can wear!

● This class involves students making two and three dimensional works of art.

Digital Art & Stop Motion Animation- Mrs. Tatum

● This elective is a hands-on animation class, in which students will explore a number of animation techniques while producing a series of short frame-by-frame digital animations.

● Students will learn the entire stop-motion process from the idea stage through the production stage and finally editing their film.

● Students will develop a story (or stories), create a storyboard plan, design or find characters, create props and backgrounds, choose a soundtrack and/or create dialogue, and take lots of pictures!

● Students will experiment with a variety of materials and methods, both 2D and 3D, while creating animated works of art. It will be helpful if students have a digital camera or device they can bring to school, but it is not required.

Foundational Spanish- Ms. BoltonIn this course, students will build reading, writing, speaking and listening competencies in Spanish. In this course, students will not only reinforce vocabulary, but will be exposed to fundamentals as grammar as well. Students will aim to speak at partial to full-sentence length and communicate on familiar topics using words they have practiced and memorized.

The Arts of Espanol- Ms. Bolton

The arts give us a window into the world, and in this class we will explore the culture of Spain and Latin America through the Fine Arts. We will learn about and recreate Latin American folk art. We’ll hear what musical instruments and influences the Spanish-speaking world has given us and learn the some traditional rhythms and melodies from those influences. We’ll retell Latin American folk tales through drama and acting, and possibly learn basic dances like salsa and bachata. The main language of instruction in this class is English

Advanced Improvisation- Mrs. EhlertIn this course, students will dive into improvisation! Improv is a unique theatrical genre in which actors perform without a script. Students will study the rules of improvisation and how to use them in various improvised scenarios. Both long- and short-form improv will be explored through drama games and scene work. Major focuses include collaboration, ensemble-building, confidence, and creative problem-solving.

Stage Combat- Mrs. EhlertHave you ever wondered how actors create execute fights in plays and movies? In this class, students will explore two types of stage combat: non-contact hand-to-hand combat and sword fighting. Students will learn safety procedures and strategies to create realistic-looking fights onstage. Major focuses include physical fitness for the actor, collaboration, choreography, safety, and how to make creative conflict onstage.

Music Performance Ensembles - Ms. Tompkins

Music performance ensembles is the perfect class for students who are interested in taking band next year! We will be learning foundations of music notation like reading notes on the staff in treble and bass clef and rhythm reading. We will be learning these essential skills through classroom instruments and towards the end of the semester we will start mini units on each instrument where you will get to try each instrument to find out what you want to play!

Band -Ms. TompkinsHave you ever wanted to play a musical instrument? Whether you are new to playing an instrument or a more advanced player, we play music to fit all levels. Instruments include flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, bassoons, trumpets, trombones, baritones, tubas and percussion. We play music of many different styles including movie soundtracks and comical pieces. We have 2 formal concerts a year and meet on “B Days”. “B Days” is for Band days!

Health & Fitness - Mrs. Southard

Students will learn about healthy lifestyle choices, focusing on the importance of proper nutrition, sleep, stress-reduction and exercise. Reading nutrition labels, analyzing our own eating habits and understanding the nutritional needs of our bodies will be an ongoing topic.

Students will be participating in physical fitness activities to stretch, strengthen and develop our cardiovascular systems. Students will need to have a yoga mat, appropriate fitness clothes and sneakers. The fitness part of the class will focus on exercises such as plank, squats, pushups and some running.

History of Sport - Mrs. SouthardIn this class, you will learn about a variety of sports and sporting events, including the Olympics, March Madness, Kentucky Derby, Super Bowl and others. You will also read a biography of an individual who impacted the athletic world. We will explore how sports have evolved and some of the current issues in athletics.

This is NOT a PE course – we

will NOT be playing sports!

Photography - Mrs. Tudor

Students will learn the basics of photography and how to improve their picture-taking skills. Essential topics include composition, lighting, special effects, macro (close-up), people and landscapes, and motion.

Students will have many opportunities to take their own photographs in order to practice and improve on the skills needed to capture great images!

*Bringing your own iPad or cell phone would be helpful, but it is not required.

Elective ProcessAll 6th grade students need to complete their fine arts classes: art, music, spanish and drama. You will be given a slip with your name and the options for A days and B days. If you need a specific course, please be sure to sign up for it. This form needs to be signed by your parent and returned to your homeroom teacher. Classes will be filled on a first come-first serve basis.

Fifth grade students will complete the on-line selection. Once the sixth grade students have been placed in electives, the fifth grade students will be placed. Every effort is made to give you at least one of your choices; however, sometimes this is not possible.

Selections are due by Tuesday Morning!
