Welcome to our 9th annual Bull Sale. Our last few Bull Sales have seen our sales barn fi lled to capacity. Although Bull Sale time is busy around here, I really enjoy spending time with potential customers and good friends. I hope that you’ll come for a pre-sale ranch visit as I’d like to show you the cattle. Thank you to our repeat buyers for your confi dence in our program. I appreciate that you share my belief in the type of cattle the industry needs to move forward profi tably. Raising elite seed stock is both a passion and a business around here. Your success is my success.

The Spring Creek Ranch is a century family farm. I bought my fi rst Simmental in 1973 and the Angus division was added in 2002. I have always known the type of cattle I wanted to raise. The strength of my operation is in the cow herd. The top end of our heifers is always kept for replacements, allowing me to speed up genetic improvement. The bottom sides of the pedigrees are ‘Springcreek’ breeding. Since its inception, Spring Creek Simmentals and Red Rose Angus has been a hands-on operation; I breed, feed, calve and do the culling. I would be glad to help you select the bulls that will enhance both your program and your bottom line, and I will stand behind them. My handshake is my word.

Our Red Angus herd was purchased by Lazy Creek Farm, Michael, Alyssa and Jon-William Verstegen of Caron, SK. They will continue to market their Red Angus Bulls through our sale. We are really happy to see our red cows go to such a good home. They are young and passionate about the purebred business, just exactly what our industry needs. They also have a Simmental herd and will market those bulls through the South-Sask. Simmental Bull and Female Sale held March 12th in Moose Jaw.

Yet while we obviously have strong roots in the past, we continue to grow for the future. I wish to thank Craig Davidson, Black Sand Cattle Company, for his confi dence in my program. He has brought an exceptional group of bulls this year, including many sons of ‘Lotto’, the high selling bull in our 2012 sale. We share common ideologies and a desire to bring forth complete bulls: bulls that are thick muscled and deep-bodied, attractive and well-balanced, with good dispositions and large testicles, but with reasonable birth weights. We believe that in order to judge a bull you must see his dam. On a more personal note, I would like to conclude with thanks to Allan Weslowski, who has been with us for about twenty-fi ve years, and who is a valuable part of our operation. Allan is hard-working, reliable, and trustworthy, and his help here at Spring Creek is very much appreciated, more so than ever this year as it has been just Allan and I to get everything done.

My mother Frances turned 94 in December. Mom has always been a valuable part of day-to-day life here on the ranch. It might be you’re here for Grandma’s famous cookies, but we hope it’s for the bulls! For all that she has done over the years our family sincerely thanks her. Thanks also to Sharon for all her inputs; as everyone knows, it takes a family effort to put on a sale.

The cattle markets are fi nally turning strongly upward and with the national herd size at 1950 levels, let’s make sure we have the genetics to take full advantage of these strong markets. With over 130 bulls in our March 6th sale, we are confi dent that we have those genetics for your program.

Welcome to the “In Pursuit of Perfection” Annual Bull Sale. It seems as if it was only yesterday that we were getting the bulls ready for the 2013 sale. As they say “You must be having fun if time is fl ying by”. Well I would say if you are doing something you enjoy and having fun, then success will follow. Really our success is our customer’s success with the product that we produce to go on and produce quality cattle that either advance herds or demand top dollar when offspring are sold.

We are in the business of raising bulls, and with that our focus has been on our female base that can get that done. Extensive embryo work over the past few years has allowed us to replicate those traits in volume and establish a herd with consistency and quality.

Our offering along with Spring Creek is as good and consistent as any you will fi nd and we feel there are truckloads of bulls that will appeal to the astute cattleman. Within our bulls there is a heavy infl uence from Spring Creek Lotto 52Y that we acquired with Labatte Simmentals two years ago. He has bred as true as any sire we have ever used and are proud to offer his offspring, in volume. We feel he will be a sire that will be used for years as his females rise to the top with the build and structure that they possess that is right for the times in the cattle business.

Make sure to review our “Customer Care Programs” as they are designed by cattlemen for cattlemen. Feedback has been excellent and we enjoy seeing these bulls through to herd sires. The Winter Feeding program is in its second year and it is rewarding to see these bulls develop into mature animals all while allowing our customers to have the extra year of use.

Mom and Dad are still carrying the heavy load of day to day work at the farm and their excitement of seeing the baby calves born each spring to the bulls developing into masculinity or females raised from a calf to having their fi rst calf still exist which is rewarding for me. It takes a little longer to get the work done, but it gets done right, and we thank them for that!

IPOP (In Pursuit of Perfection) Bull Sale Customer Care Winter Feeding ProgramThe objective of this program is to work with our customers to foster the yearling bull through the most critical year of his life -- the first winter after his inaugural breeding season. In the case of our sale, most of these bulls are yearling bulls. The challenge for many producers, but not all, is where do you put them? They are usually a nuisance and if you put them with the mature bulls they never do as well. Tying up a pen or field to feed just a few animals becomes a challenge as well.The program is built on a sliding scale which works off the purchase price of the bull or bull average (multiple bulls). IPOP Bull Sale will charge the customer the amount left owing on the feeding program in that purchase bracket. If a purchase price is between a trigger point, it will be rounded down. Based on industry feedback the wintering of a yearling bull will be $700 +/- per head. The cost for the feeding program will be charged on delivery of the bull in the fall, based on the range you fall into for that bull or group of bulls, or no charge at all! IPOP Bull Sale will deal with the feeding co-operator on complete feeding program costing.The sign up for this program will be on sale day or shortly after the spring IPOP Bull Sale to allow time to coordinate the winter program. If the customer does not wish to utilize this support tool then there will be no credit given for feeding their own bulls. The Wintering Program will start in mid October and run to April 1st. If additional time is required by the customer on either side of this program (fall or extended spring) it will be at the customer’s expense and at the convenience of the feeding cooperator. All bull deliveries in the fall will be cordinated into a 3-4 day window.

IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty”The goal of this program is again to work with our customers in sharing the risk on bulls that will not work based on factors out of their control. We also want to take more responsibility in seeing a bull through to maturity and ensuring things like feet and legs stand up. A bull purchase is a major investment not just for the future of your herd but in the expectation of a longer productive life of the animal. We also assume there is risk past year one, even though most bulls are only insured in their first year of service. We want to work with our customers through to maturity. The time your bull spends in the Winter Feeding Program will be included in this warranty. If the IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty” is initiated, it will be paid out in the form of a credit towards the purchase of a bull in the subsequent year’s sale. Purchaser must employ a licensed veterinarian to treat , diagnose and/or fill out a vet form. If the animal dies, a postmortem may be required. In the event of mortality of a purchase bull, the seller’s credit responsibility will be limited to $20,000.00/bull or the purchase price if less. ‘Olympian’ is one of a kind! He weaned at 1030 lbs., a #1 adjusted ranking, and he may be the heaviest bull I have ever raised. He has had the herd bull look about him since a very young age. His basket is full of goodies…homo polled and black, blaze-faced, very thick, big testicles, good disposition and maybe best of all, out of a super baldy cow. She was the high seller in our 40th Anniversary Sale, selling to Rancier Farms, Cedar Creek Simmentals and Canadian Donors. Retaining 100 doses of ‘in herd use’ semen.

I have really liked this calf all along. It is fun to watch these bulls develop each and every time you go to the pasture. His dam is a beautiful black blaze-faced ‘Line Drive’ cow. ‘Hot Shot’ is moderate framed, deep bodied and has a great hair coat. This sire group out of ‘Springcreek All In 155Y’, now owned by Crossroad Farms, is outstanding. Retaining 100 doses of ‘in herd use’ semen.

Here is one of my favorites. ‘ Rockstar’ is out of a nice ‘Knock Out’ dam, and her ‘Line Drive’ dam was a high seller in our recent sale, selling to Dugdale Ag. MBJ 903A had a very reasonable birth weight and has really come along through weaning and yearling with adjusted weights near 900 and 1500 lbs. I feel he will add some power and some calving ease. Study his masculinity and smaller head and see what you think. Retaining 100 doses of ‘in herd use’ semen.

‘Rocker’ is a full sib to the feature bull ‘Rockstar’. He may not quite measure up to his full brother, but don’t overlook him, as he has the potential to be a great breeding bull.

This is the natural calf out of ‘Linne 72S’ and she sure knows how to raise them. This bull ranked #2 for adjusted weaning weight and #1 for adjusted yearling weight. Her offspring have lots of growth and a lot of rib shape to go with it. Maternal brothers sold last year to Bonchuks, Clear Water Simmental and Prairie livestock. She also has a red ‘Wallbanger’ son in this sale. I should have called him ‘Royalty’ as he is royally bred, being out of ‘Linne 72S’ and ‘Lotto’. Retaining 100 doses of ‘in herd use’ semen.

He is a full sib to MBJ 142A, and his grand dam is the dam of MBJ 154A.

Here is what many will be looking for: a black blaze sire that will leave black and red calves that will all be polled. I have a full sister to ‘Lotto’ that has just calved and her udder is perfect. 11A is an outstanding bull calf with all the requirements to be a sale feature. Built like a box car he has that typical “Lotto” look to him. From a young age he has carried the herd bull attitude. 32T from Beggers Diamond V in Montana has raised a fair list of herd bulls in her short carrier to date. An All In maternal sister to 11A calved this winter with an ideally structured udder.

We have never used a bull in volume that has bred to type so consistently as “Lotto”. Really they are everything we would look to for our type of cattle - loose made, deep bodied with natural muscle expression, heavy wavy hair and tremendous dispositions all in a moderate package. 23A checks off this list of criteria with ease. His dam was a nice quiet cow that sold to Hilltop Holdings in our 40th Anniversary Sale. All his calves will be polled and black. There are two bull for sale out of MBJ 106Y who is a maternal brother to SC ALL IN 155Y, the sire of some feature lots. They have great performance and thick butts.

The performance numbers on this young bull are very good. He is a maternal sib to last year’s high seller, ‘Anchorman 82Z’ that sold to the Deegs and the Muirheads. By the way, the ‘Anchorman‘ calves look great.

16A is a ¾ Angus out of Final Answer mothered by a ½ blood female we had to keep at home. A twin at birth, he has developed into a deep made thick bodied calving ease individual. If you are looking for a hint of Simmental, with a strong calving ease pedigree, in your program, 16A will fit the bill.

A two year old Best Beef bull that was leased to a neighbor in 2013. He ran with 45 cows and did his job. He has proven he can cover cows and is a sure breeder. On the bottom side he goes back to our foundation MBJ 64N cow.

The Angus “BandWagon”, has worked very well here on our Simmental Heifers. 56U’s make great females and this cross has produced a deep bodied, heavy haired, gentle disposition bull. Going back to MBJ 116S who has left us with a large offspring at BlackSand.

Here is an opportunity to buy a two year old bull. Due to shortage of time and labour, I am using a picture of him as a yearling.

Similar to 32Z, 60Z refused to give us any sample to test as a yearling. He as well, bred cows and tested in the fall. He is stout made and backed by a stacked pedigree. He will cover cows and has the performance to make their calves grow!

Here is a two year old with a low birth weight and out of the flush cow ‘72R’. He is pictured as a yearling. Owned jointly with sun Rise Simmentals.

We could not get a semen sample from this bull as a yearling so we bred him to some cows and tested him again in the fall which he passed fine. If you are looking for a two year old that can cover cows and has power to burn, Super Bee will fit the bill.

This guy will add some pounds and some volume to his calves. His ‘Mountain View’ dam is a very good milker with a quality udder. She has reached ‘elite’ status.

I have three cows by the Scottish bull ‘Commander Bond’, including the dam of this bull, and I really like them. They are moderate in every way, with good udders, dispositions and feet. I find their performance much better than their EPDs would indicate.

I really like the ‘Detour’ calves. ‘Detour’ sets himself above many in the breed for his ability to put tops and butts on his offspring. Note the consistency in the red offering.
