Program NotesPevensey Castle

This tone poem is suggestive of the historical times surrounding the fall of Pevensey Castle in the south of England during the Dark Ages. A very imaginative and effective piece, it offers a program elements not usually found at this grade level. – note by Nicholas Garcia

InvictaA dramatic contest overture, “Invicta” by James Swearingen has become

standard repertoire for intermediate level ensembles. Its syncopated themes and catchy melodies, typical of Swearingen has made it a very popular piece for school ensembles.

Fantasy on “Yankee Doodle”“Fantasy on ‘Yankee Doodle’” is a free treatment of one of America’s most

famous early songs. It was commissioned by, and premiered at, the Bethlehem Central School District Band Festival in Delmar, NY on March 16th, 1995, with the composer conducting.

The work begins with a vigorous fanfare leading into a humorous statement of the theme by solo tuba, followed by variations. The following Allegro section then transforms the mood to one of joyous expectation, with the occasional sections in 7/8 injecting an element of surprise.

After a lyrical episode using fragments of the tune, a Latin percussion vamp eventually leads to a full statement of the tune, played first in quadruple time and then double time. The final Maestoso fanfare leads this work to a satisfying and exciting close.

ShenandoahTaken from a song dedicated to the Shenandoah Valley in the Appalachian

Mountains, this is one of Frank Ticheli’s more popular works for young band. Ticheli describes his piece in this way: “In my setting of Shenandoah I was inspired by the freedom and beauty of the folk melody and by the natural images evoked by the words, especially the image of a river. I was less concerned with the sound of a rolling river than with its life-affirming energy -- its timelessness. Sometimes the accompaniment flows quietly under the melody; other times it breathes alongside it. The work’s mood ranges from quiet reflection, through growing optimism, to profound exaltation.” – note by Nicholas Garcia

River of Life“River of Life” is a tone poem that describes an exciting river raft ride. It

starts rather peacefully in the calm part of the river with the sounds one would experience in this quiet section. The energy gradually builds as you glide into a more turbulent and exciting part of the ride!

Prelude, Siciliano, and RondoThis work was originally composed by Malcolm Arnold for Brass Band, for

which England is well known,. It was originally titled “Little Suite for Brass” and, as its title implies, is dance inspired music. This arrangement by John Paynter is very faithful to the original version of this work, making it more like a transcription. Paynter adds the colors of the woodwinds and expands the percussion parts to further enhance this fine work.

Marche SlaveSimilar to the iconic “1812 Overture” in form, “Marche Slave” even features

the “Russian Hymn” in the trombones at the end. It was composed for the Red Cross Society for a benefit concert honoring wounded Serbian war veterans from the Serbo-Turkish War. (1876-1878) The work shows the Russian sympathies with their fellow Slavs featuring Serbian folk songs as prominent themes.

The Free LanceJohn Philip Sousa while known mostly for his iconic marches, composed a

few operettas that were performed on Broadway and were quite successful. “The Free Lance” march was based on one of his operettas of the same title. Except for the opening four measures, the melodies used in this march all come from the operetta. This march is also unique in that it begins in 6/8 meter and changes to duple meter at the trio.

Red Rock MountainThis composition is an episodic work that paints a musical portrait of Red

Rock Mountain, a beautiful mountain landscape in Pennsylvania. Brass fanfares and soaring wind lines begin the piece. It transitions into an emotional section, which depicts the mountains at dusk. As the sun rises and sheds light on its peaks, the music becomes lyrical and rhythmically incisive. The piece culminates in a heroic brass finale depicting the grandeur of these stunning East Coast mountains.

Second PreludeOriginally a set of five piano pieces, Second Prelude, by George Gershwin,

is one of his well-known Three Preludes for piano. This prelude captures all that defines the Gershwin sound. A pioneer and master of Broadway and American popular music in the early 20th century, Second Prelude evokes the mood and atmosphere of late night New York City streets and smoky jazz clubs. This arrangement for band, by John Krance, is an excellent adaptation that both stays true to the original work and displays the best of the wind band ensemble. – note by Nicholas Garcia

Kirkpatrick’s Muse“Kirkpatrick’s Muse,” an original work by Jay Bocook, was commissioned by

the McDaniel College Summer Music Camp in Westminster, Maryland. The piece begins with a slow Irish style flute solo, and moves seamlessly to a

quick allegro in the style of an Irish reel. The melodic material is a 16-bar theme loosely derived from the Appalachian fiddling tune “Glory in the Meeting House,” which originated in the Kentucky River basin, and has been attributed to fiddler Luther Strong.

In Irish dance music, the rhythmic tendencies of a reel are similar to swing style of American jazz. However, rather than referring to these rhythms as “swing,” Celtic musicians typically say the music is performed “with a bounce.” Traditionally, the treble reel is danced in hard shoes so that the musicians can hear the bounce in each step. In “Kirkpatrick’s Muse,” a bodhrán creates and maintains the rhythmic drive throughout. The bodhrán is the traditional Celtic frame drum, traditionally played while seated, and held vertically, with the left hand placed on the back of the goatskin head and used to manipulate pitch. The part can be performed on any frame drum or concert tom, so long as the player pays careful attention to the accent patterns written.

“Kirkpatrick’s Muse” highlights the simple charm of traditional Irish music in a new and interesting setting through many variances in harmony, texture, and color. The use of the bodhrán and other colorful percussive instruments emphasizes the dance-like nature of this lively piece for concert band.

Short EssayAn essay is generally defined as a short and somewhat informal composition on

a single subject. To that end, my “Short Essay” for symphonic wind ensemble lasts only four minutes and concerns the inception and development of one musical theme.

The introduction sets both the tonal vocabulary and primary rhythmic material of the essay. …Only four pitches are heard for the first 90 seconds! The syncopated eighth-note rhythms and shifting accents that figure prominently throughout the piece are also introduced.

Short statements of the four-pitch set from throughout the ensemble build into a tutti arrival point that immediately transforms into an ostinato, establishing the second section of the essay. A playful tune fleshes out the tonality by realizing the rest of the major scale, but the harmonic seconds, suspended fourths, and syncopated rhythms from the introduction remain as part of the accompaniment. Brilliant chords and an aggressive unison statement of the opening rhythm bring the work to a close much in the same way that a conscious student restates the thesis sentence at the end of a literary essay.

Paris SketchesNote from the composer:This is my personal tribute to a city I love, and each movement pays homage

to some part of the French capital and to other composers who lived, worked, or passed through – rather as did Ravel in his own tribute to an earlier master in Le Tombeau de Couperin. Running like a unifying thread through the whole piece is the idea of bells – a prominent feature of Paris life.

1. Saint-Germain-de-Pres – the Latin Quarter famous for artistic associations and bohemian lifestyle. This is a dawn tableau haunted by the shade of Ravel: the city awakens with the ever-present sound of morning bells.

2. Pigalle – the Soho of Paris. This is a burlesque with scenes cast in the mould of a balletic scherzo – humorous in a kind of ‘Stravinsky-meets-Prokofiev’ way. It’s episodic, but everything is based on the harmonic figuration of the opening. The bells here are car horns and police sirens!

3. Père Lachaise – This is the city’s largest cemetery, the final resting place of many a celebrity who once walked its streets. The spirit of Satie’s Gymnopédies – themselves a tribute to a still more distant past – is affectionately evoked before the movement concludes with a quotation of the Dies Irae. This is the work’s slow movement, and the mood is one of softness and delicacy, which I have attempted to match with more transparent orchestration. The bells are gentle, nostalgic, and wistful.

4. Les Halles – A bustling finale; the bells triumphant and celebratory. Les Halles is in the old market area, a Parisian Covent Garden, and, like Pigalle, this is a series of related but contrasted episodes. The climax quotes from Berlioz’s Te Deum, which was first performed in 1855 at the church of St. Eustache – actually in the district of Les Halles. A gradual crescendo initiated by the percussion prefaces the material proper, and the work ends with a backward glance at the first movement before closing with the final bars of the Berlioz Te Deum.

Cartoon British composer Paul Hart is best known for his numerous works for

television, films, and commercials. Hart has also composed more lengthy works for orchestra and band including a jazz-influenced concerto for legendary guitarist John Williams. “Cartoon” was commissioned in 1990 for the Royal Tournament, a popular annual competition at Earl’s Court in London that features military bands, marching exhibitions, and battle re-enactments. “Cartoon” is Paul Hart’s nod to the energetic and captivating music which accompanied the classic Warner Bros. “Looney Tunes,” the Walt Disney “Silly Symphonies,” and the later MGM shorts directed by Tex Avery. These cartoons all featured very distinctive music, and many of the best scores of this era were composed by legendary composer Carl Stalling or one of his proteges. Stalling remains a cult favorite among musicians for his tongue-in-cheek quotations of classical music’s “greatest hits” and for the imaginative way that his music brought to life some of film’s most hilarious and memorable characters, many of whom barely spoke. Hart writes, “It’s all here! The big opening credits, the cat and mouse tease and chase, the strutting swagger, and of course the BIG FINALE! Best of all, it can all happen in the imagination of the audience, not on the film screen.”
