9:00 - 10:15 am: Library Sustainability with Rebekkah Smith Aldrich & Matthew Bollerman

Learn about the important role libraries can play in larger community conversations about resiliency, climate change and a sustain-able future for the communities that we serve. What does this actually look like? What does it look like when libraries make “sustainable decisions”? What activities will promote “sustainable thinking” in libraries?

Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, MLS, cSBA, LEED AP, is the Coordinator for Library Sustainability for the Mid-Hudson Library System (NY). She is a founding member of the ALA Sustainability Round Table and co-chair of NYLA’s Sustainability Initiative. Matthew Boller-man is the Director of the Hauppauge Public Library. Matt was recognized by NYLA with their 2014 Outstanding Service to Libraries Award.

9:00 - 10:15 am: Book Buzz with Brian Nielsen

Join Penguin Random House rep, Brian Nielsen, to learn about tomorrow's adult bestsellers BEFORE they become bestsellers! Hear inside infor-

mation from Penguin Random House editorial and reader’s advisory resources.

Brian Nielsen, National Sales Manager, started working with public libraries in 1999 as an independent rep for Books on Tape. Brian officially

joined Random House in 2006 and has continued to work closely with public libraries to support their audio book needs, provide new title infor-

mation and facilitate library special events. When Brian is not visiting a library in his northeast territory he can likely be found at one of the state or

national library conferences.

10:30—11:45: Mental Health First Aid with Melanie Frauel

This workshop is an overview presentation of the 8-hour Mental Health First Aid course. Mental Health First Aid is an evidence based public education and preven-

tion tool meant to improve the public's knowledge of mental health and substance use problems. Much like a traditional First Aid or CPR course, Mental Health First

Aid is about educating the public in how to help a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the

crisis resolves.

After 34 years of teaching in Sodus, NY, Melanie Frauel retired in June 2016. Since retirement she has become a nationally certified Adult and Youth Mental Health

First Aid Instructor, teaching Mental Health First Aid classes. She also serves as the Mental Health First Aid Sustainability Coordinator for Wayne County Rural

Health Network in Sodus, NY.

10:30—11:45: Navigating Your Board with Brian Hildreth and Margo Gustina

Healthy relationships between library director and trustees are essential. But, sometimes these interactions can be tricky. It is

evident to staff, volunteers and patrons when these relations suffer. A poor director and trustee relationship will ultimately

endanger library success.

Rooted in the Roles & Responsibilities Guidelines of the Handbook for New Public Library Directors in New Y ork State,

this program will help all directors navigate the challenging, but yet rewarding trustee relationship. Participants will learn through a basic overview of roles & re-

sponsibilities, case studies, sample situations and helpful tips. In the end, directors should be well-equipped to work collaboratively with their board members, and

leverage resources for improved library administration.
