L os saludos, el año Pasado cuan-do asistí PRAASA, era una expe-riencia agobiante porque era su

delegado nuevo que prepara para miprimera Conferencia. Este año era nodiferente, un honor extremo ser sudelegado a la Conferencia Generaldel Servicio y para asistir las confer-encias cincuenta cuarto y cincuentaquinto de Alcoholicos Anónimos.PRAASA es una manera magníficapara un delegado nuevo de obtenerinformado con los otros delegados dela Región Pacífica, un acontecimientodonde el delegado puede obteneruna ventaja en la conferencia. Greetings,Last year when I attendedPRAASA, it was such an over-

whelming experience as your newdelegate on the road preparing formy first Conference. This year wasno different, an extreme honor to beyour delegate to the General ServiceConference and to attend the 54thand 55th conferences of AlcoholicsAnonymous.

PRAASA is just the ticket for anew delegate to get acquainted withthe other delegates from the PacificRegion, an event where the delegatecan get a jump start on the confer-ence. The theme is always the sameas the conference and the panels area place to hear presentations onthose conference agenda topics. Thedelegates get together several timesand discuss what is needed to beginthat preparation for the Conference.

This year in Tucson it was anoth-er large PRAASA with over 900 pre-registered and the minute the regis-tration room was open it was a busyplace with people registering at theconference. Our turn to host aPRAASA will be in approximately2016, however there seems to be amove on the part of other areas tobid out of the rotation that has beenfollowed for years.

Next year PRAASA will be heldin Woodland Hills CA, and 2007 inPortland Area 58. Let's start prepar-ing right now for next year and puttogether a very large group fromArea 92.

I have been urged by many inArea 92 service to bid a Forum inour area in 2008, so I will prepare abid to host and see what happens. I

will present it to the Assembly inRichland to see what you think. Thebids are presented at theConference and there will be severalfrom the Pacific Region.We had aspecial Forum shortly after becom-ing an Area but we have never had afull Forum in our Area, so it justmight be time.

Please ask your DCM to bid for adate to get together so I can sharewith you my trip to New York and the

55th Conference. If we could gettogether in a few places it would getthe maximum for the time we have toshare. I wonder about giving anenlarged delegate report at the JulyQuarterly; just a thought.

I want to thank Dave M., myDelegate Alternate, for all the hardwork he has been doing. Last yearand this he’s been invaluable inhelping prepare the conference

agenda to send to all of you, andhelping me to prepare for the con-ference.

Please take the time you need tohelp me prepare by being at theAssembly with your conscience.The second page of our servicemanual has two statements. Each ofthese has a special meaning to thosein General Service who seem to takeon that larger responsibility for AAas a whole. Should we fail to keepour precious fellowship safe fromourselves, we are surely not safefrom outside pressures. At PRAASAthey close each meeting with theResponsibility Statement:

I am responsible.When anyone,anywhere, reaches out for help, Iwant the hand of AA always to bethere. And for that, I am responsible.

I look forward to seeing you all inRichland for our area’s second-everSpring Pre-Conference Assembly.We have a lot of work to do but wealso have some fellowship to helpwith our own AA needs. Our teach-ers have made it clear that our lifedepends on all three Legacies,Recovery as a result of Service to ourfellow, and Unity to insure that theother two remain.

D espués que artículo del mes pasado que comencéa preguntarse, donde puede comenzamos a enfo-car en asuntos en el nivel de Area. Para decir

necesitamos trabajar en asuntos es una declaración muyancha y nosotros no podemos tratar realmente condeclaraciones anchas. Por ejemplo, así como con mipropia vida, para decir necesito tratar con asuntos no tra-baja. Tengo que trabajar en los detalles.

A fter last month's article I started to wonder,where can we begin to focus on issues at theArea level. To say we need to work on issues is a

very broad statement and we can't really deal withbroad statements. For example, just as with my own life,to say I need to deal with issues doesn't work. I have towork on the details.

So where do the details come from? In my own life Ilook at the details when I do an inventory.When I do aninventory I see that even though I deal with negatives,there are many positive traits that I also have to take intoaccount. In my opinion, it is the same withthe Area.

Our Area has many good things goingfor it. We have passionate people that arecommitted to this Area. We have districtsputting on workshops and many peoplegetting involved in all levels of service, buteven the best home group and the best dis-trict have issues — or in another way of say-ing, opportunities for growth.

How can the area help? Well, first of all,we need to know what is happening in yourdistricts and home groups. Our area secre-tary, Woodrow, is developing a new formatformat for DCM reports. There will be a place to tell theArea what are some of the problems or opportunitiesyou district is experiencing, as well as things that yourdistrict have found to be working well.

If you don't have some Standing Commitee chairsfilled let us know.With these reports Woodrow will thenbe able to compile a report of things that are affectingour Area as reported by the Districts. It will give theArea, a starting point from which we can help. This isespecially important for the Districts that don't have allthe standing committees filled. It will give the AreaStanding Chairs an opportunity to touch bases withthose DCM's to see where they can help. With this infor-mation the Standing Committees can direct their ener-gies on our issues.

Information is the key to good communication. It'sour cornerstone to having an effective Area.See you in Richland,Sharon T.

I emailed every area officer and DCM (who has email)an agenda for the Spring Pre-conference AssemblyApril 8-10, 2005 at the Clarion Inn Hotel Conference

Center. I also snail-mailed hard copies of the agendaand the Assembly flier (registration form) to the 11DCMs/area officers who do not have email. TheAssembly flier is available on the area web site, andthere will be agendas at the Assembly as well. Areminder that the deadline for meals was March 25.

I participated at the Pre-Assembly held in District 10on Sat. March 5, 2005. There was a great turnout, includ-

ing AA members from Districts 5, 6, 10, 19,and 20. It was actually the only Pre-Assembly I heard about. That same day, wehad a GSR school, and I learned manythings and was excited about all the new,enthusiastic GSRs! Thanks to all the volun-teers who helped organize and presentboth the Pre-Assembly and GSR School.

I was very blessed to be able to attendthe Pacific Region Alcoholics AnonymousService Assembly (PRAASA) in Tucson, AZMarch 11-13. It was everything I dreamed itcould be and more! I had a wonderful time,met many AA members from all over our

region as well as some from Area 79 BC/Yukon, Japan,and Australia. My biggest eye-opener was two nights atthe roundtable for area chairs and alt. chairs. All 15 dele-gate areas were represented by either their chair, alt.chair or both, and we shared so much about differencesand similarities amongst our areas- how we conductbusiness, how many times we meet a year and whichservice positions come to which meetings, how motionsare processed- the same things that we talk for hoursand hours about at our WSEA 92 meetings, imagine that!It was a very supportive, encouraging, and educationalexperience for me. I highly recommend to any and all ofyou out there in “area 92-land” seriously consider mak-ing yourself available to attend PRAASA next year inWoodland Hills, CA. It is an experience not to be missed!

I attended PRAASA this year andhad a great time. It was held inTuscon Arizona March 11th, 12

and 13. The weather in Tuscan wasamazing and it is a town I fell in lovewith. The events around PRAASAwere all very informative and full ofexperience strength and hope of AAmembers throughout the PacificRegion,

I had the privilege of chairingthe report-back session on Sundaymorning. This is where the secre-taries for the round tables get twoand a half minutes to report on whatwas shared at their round tables onFriday and Saturday nights.Whilechairing this session I was moved bythe dedication of the people whowere sharing. They took the time tocome to PRAASA, many at their ownexpense, and then did the work oftaking the notes for a round tablethat lasted until midnight the nightbefore and then showed up by 8:00

am to give a report. To me this was areflection of all of the hard work and

dedication of AA members through-out the fellowship. Not everyone

could be at PRAASA but we were allrepresented. This is truly gratitude inaction and sacrifice in action.

The deadline for getting groupinformation changes to GSO in timeto be included in the Western StatesDirectory is May 7th. I will bringpackets to the Assembly with theGroup Information Sheets for eachdistrict. The panels ranged in subjectsfrom the Three Legacies of Recovery,Unity, and Service, to Basics of theHomegroup, Literature, and Mediaand Technology. I served as a timerfor a panel, which was a lot of fun.Each panel was not only informative,the speakers were entertaining.Imagine that…entertaining alco-holics, entertaining alcoholics!

I think the most inspirationalthing I carried away from this expe-rience is the people I met. In atten-dance among the members from thePacific Region were Delegates fromAustralia and B.C.Yukon; membersfrom Japan and Guatemala; theGeneral Manager of GSO, GregMuth; Bob P., who wrote the last storyin the Big Book; and a man with acharming Irish brogue, John P, whohails from New Jersey and is a PastTrustee (Northeast Region). Heshared his experience, strength andhope with us all after the banquet.

And you know, I never felt “lessthan” in their company. I simply feltblessed to be among them, just as Ido in my homegroup here in CleElum.

I am grateful to be sober todayas A.A. is nearing its 70th anniver-sary and our fellowship is so strong.I'm looking forward to next March inWoodland Hills, Calif., when I canconnect with the friends I met thisyear and those I've yet to meet. District 14 is planning to have someSponsorship and GSR workshops thisspring.

We have a new PI/CPC chair-person.We are so happy to haveKimberly C. take this position. Thechair has been vacant for severalyears and she is doing a great jobalready.

The flyers for the 17th annualTroy/Bonners Ferry Camp out arealready being distributed. It will beat the Yaak campground this year onthe 8th 9th and 10th of July and it'salways a great time.

There are several potlucks andspeaker meetings around the districtevery month that are in the sched-ule, my favorite being the firstThursday potluck and speaker meet-ing at the Trinity Lutheran Church,6784 Cody Street in Bonners Ferry at6:30 PM.We are always looking fornew speakers as we have beengoing on for 7 yrs and have used upall of the locales. Hello from District 19! We held our last district meeting

on the 21st. It was well attended andparticipation in service work seems tobe growing in our district.We dis-cussed the motions for the upcomingassembly, and at this time we haveseveral GSRs and others planning onattending. Hope to have a goodturnout from District 19 this time!

We also discussed the upcomingdelegate report we are hosting onMay 21st. This will be starting at10:00am at the Moses Lake Alanoclub, 724 W. Third. Potluck lunch atabout noon!

Ron F. talked to Steve and plansare being finalized to have theDistrict Inventory in April or May.Ron had asked the question ofwhether the Touchet River Roundupis an official AA function. Here's oneanswer (in short): “The criterion forwhether to treat an event as AA ver-sus not AA (and to interact with itfinancially, list it in the Grapevine,newsletters, web sites, announce it atmeetings, etc.), can often beanswered by asking this question:Does it include one or more AA meet-ings? If so, it should probably betreated like any other meetingregardless of whether the hosts are ahome group, a district, a committee,or just a group of AA members. Asyou know, many regular AA meetingsaren't registered as groups. In thatsense, the TRR is an AA meeting thatmeets regularly-just once a year. Butan official AA event is part of theGeneral Service structure.”

Hola, AA. Mi nombre es Marc y yo soy un alcoholico. Soyhonorado y agradecido ser pedido tomar parte en mirecuperación escribiendo en el segundo paso hoy. No sólosea satisfacer que yo me he sido dado el obsequio deunos pocos momentos de la cordura en la sobriedad, perosoy tan asegurar en el segundo paso que seré restauradoa la cordura. Creer en la restauración de la cordura puedeestar como un salvavidas tirado a usted cuando usted pisasu última agua antes de ahogar.Y creo que mi Poder másAlto me tiró el salvavidas- AA, los Doce Pasos, y laConfraternidad- restaurarme a la cordura de un estadodesesperado de la mente y el cuerpo. La locura puedesignificar la mayor parte de las cosas a la gente diferente,aún en el Programa. Para mí, la locura es ese estado de lamente antes tomar una bebida, o eso encuadran de lamente cuando yo no he estado trabajando los pasos o usarlas herramientas de AA, el alcoholismo básicamente sintratamiento. Hi, AA. My name is Marc and I am an alcoholic. I amhonored and grateful to be asked to participate in myrecovery by writing on the second step today. Not only isit gratifying that I have been given the gift of a fewmoments of sanity in sobriety, but it is so assuring in thesecond step that I will be restored to sanity. Believing inthe restoration of sanity can be like a life preserverthrown to you when you are treading your last waterprior to drowning. And I believe my Higher Power threeme the life preserver- A.A., the Twelve Steps, and theFellowship- to restore me to sanity from a “hopeless stateof mind and body”.

Insanity can mean a great deal of things to differentpeople, even in the Program. For me, insanity is that stateof mind before taking a drink, or that frame-of-mindwhen I have not been working the steps or using thetools of A.A., basically untreated alcoholism. I have cometo understand that the bottle and alcohol are just sym-bols of my problems, and that, a great deal of my prob-lem lies within my mind, in my oldideas, within my perceptions, withinmy level of sanity. I know I am insanewhen my thought-life is governed by ahundred forms of fear, self-delusion,self-seeking and self-pity.

My insanity made me restless, irri-table, and discontented.When I drank,I was restored to sanity. The greatequalizer- John Barleycorn- I was com-petent, capable, a part of, and theinsanity of my mind was once againquelled. Then, in recovery, I am sup-posed to believe that a Higher Powerand a bunch of drunks are going torestore my mind to some semblance ofsanity and I could know peace andserenity, something only known for afew moments of drunkenness.Well,thank God for a few alcoholics, ofwhich my Higher Power workedthrough, shared my story, my sanityand I came to believe that I could alsobe restored to a place where I couldescape the hopeless state of mind andbody I was in. I could escape my innerperson of which my mind and myinsanity were the jail-keepers.

As I have gone through recoveryand continue to grow, more is continu-ally being revealed to me. I have cometo completely believe that through myactions in the Program and through myrelationship with my Higher Power, Iwill, incrementally through theprocess, be restored to sanity. Thesolution I used to find in alcohol for myinsanity, comes now to me, slowly, froma loving Higher Power, the Fellowship,and my actions of working the steps.

And, a the good alcoholic I am, I am so very glad toknow that I am not trading off the only solace I had, alco-hol, for something that was nothing. It has turned outopposite, I have found the true sanity within theProgram, and alcohol, the illusion of sanity. Thank youA.A. and God; for of myself and by myself, I lacked thepower and was insane. Hi, My name is Doug H and I am a recovering alco-holic, currently doing time at A.H.C.C. I have 16 monthsClean and Sober and I have been attending the“Landing Place Group Meetings” for about 2 or 3months. I'm working my steps with my sponsor. I've been schedule to be transferred to a lessersecured facility in the next few weeks. But before I go Iwanted to express my gratitude to the sponsors who

The GSO publication,“The HomeGroup: Heartbeat of AA,” is being

Motion 1That WSEA 92 change its procedure for processing motions inthe following manner, throughout the remainder of the 5 yearperiod of motion #2003.2:

To have all motions processed at our two Assemblies only,eliminating the quarterly system of processing motions. Ourtwo Area Committee meetings (quarterlies) will no longerprocess motions. A motion will take 6 months to process andwill go from Assembly to Assembly, giving the home groupplenty of time to discuss and get background for each motion.However, the Assembly, may, with substantial unanimity vote,decide to pass or fail a motion at an Assembly if the bodyfound it necessary.

Example: October Fall Assembly: motions from AprilSpring Assembly would be voted on. New motions presentedand passed on the April Spring Assembly.

Motion 2That Area 92 add a line in the Area Handbook that reads:"Allmotions not specifying the time they will take effect, will, ifpassed, take effect at the end of the assembly."

Background: At the last assembly, one motion in particular(if passed) could have affected all other motions coming to thefloor at that assembly. A long discussion ensued as to when themotion would take effect if passed. This motion simply sets atime in writing as a precedent to use as a reference.

Intent: The intent of this motion is not that all motions takeeffect at a particular time. It is simply to have something in thearea handbook as a reference. Any Motion may specify a par-ticular time it is intended to take effect, and that specificationwould instantly over-rule this line in the Area 92 handbook.This motion would only apply to motions specifying no date,and end a lengthy discussion as to "when it would take effect."

Implementation: One line would be entered in the Area 92handbook reading,"All motions not specifying the time theywill take effect, will, if passed take effect at the end of theassembly."

Motion 3That WSEA 92 add a line to the Delegate's expenses to include aline for reasonable expenses, not to exceed $200, "if" theDelegate from WSEA92 is elected to a Chair position at theConference and will be required at attend the January Boardmeeting representing WSEA 92 and AA as a whole.

Motion 4That we eliminate the roll call procedure for the election of ourconference Delegate and Alternate Delegate and adopt the fol-lowing qualifications to serve as Area 92 Delegate. Before bal-loting starts, the chair shall ask all those in the body who meetthe stated qualifications to stand; the chair will then ask that ofthese members with the time and energy available and will-ingness to serve to please remain standing; the A.A. membersstill standing will be the roster for the election. Each individ-ual's name (suggest full names) and district shall be read aloudand written on the board. The election will begin using the3rd. legacy procedure. The qualifications will be the same forthe Alternate Delegate.WSEA 92 DELEGATE QUALIFICATIONS*: Has served asGeneral Service Representative (GSR). Has served as DistrictCommittee Member (DCM). Minimum 5 years of continuoussobriety, which includes active participation in local and areaaffairs. *FOR COMPLETE LIST OF QUALIFICATIONS REFER TOTHE A.A.SERVICE MANUAL, PP.S45-S46.Moved by the Rocketed Into A Fourth Dimension (R4D) group

of Alcoholics Anonymous District 10,WSEA 92 Intent:We believe this small step as an Area may aid us in

choosing our future leaders with increasing care and responsi-bility, which is in line with the principles outlined in ConceptIX. It is our hope that this would also encourage those who areso qualified, to make themselves available to serve AlcoholicsAnonymous and Area 92 in this capacity, when the time comes.CONCEPT IX "Good service leaders, together with sound andappropriate methods of choosing them, are at all levels indis-pensable for our future functioning and safety....."

Background: The basis for this motion is taken directlyfrom the A.A. Service Manual and the 12 Concepts for WorldService. including Concept IX, and Chapter 3 (The District andthe D.C.M.; Term, Eligibility, and Election Procedures, pg, S30;Chapter Four (The Area Assembly and Activities, A TypicalElection, Item #6. and bullets, pg. S34; Chapter six (TheDelegate, Qualifications, pp. S45-S46).

Current procedure:We have 6 elected Area Officers,including the Delegate, Alt,Delegate, Chairperson, Alt.Chair,Treasurer, and Alt.Treasurer. These trusted servants are elect-ed every 2 years by all Area GSR's in Assembly with the AreaCommittee. When electing our new Area Officers, the chairdoes a roll call of the Area Committee, where each A.A. mem-ber currently serving on the outgoing Area Committee isasked if they are available to serve in each of the 6 electedpositions. When one answers yes, "available", they are thenplaced on the roster as a candidate for the election of thattrusted servant position (by 3rd. legacy procedure). After theroll call of the Area Committee is completed, other AA mem-bers are allowed to make themselves available. Our Area hasno qualifications in place for any of these service positions.The Area Committee includes: 6 Elected Area Officers--electedevery 2 years by assembly of G.S.R.'s. 9 Appointed Committeepeople-- appointed by the elected officers. 23 D.C.M.s --eachD.C.M. is elected by their Districts.

Impact:We would elect our conference Delegate andAlternate Delegate based upon these minimal qualifications,which are taken directly from the service manual and in linewith the principles of our program. We would no longer con-duct a roll call of the Area Committee for these two positions,and nominations would not be taken from the floor. Thesequalifications would also be added to our Area Handbookunder each Area Officer description.

Motion: That WSEA 92 add a permanent, rotating, non-fundedhandbook committee under the responsibility of the AreaSecretary. This committee would be made up of the AreaSecretary and 4 appointed DCMs. The committee will beresponsible for keeping the Area Handbook updated.Submitted by Granola Group in District 20.

Background:We have formed a handbook committee twicebefore. Once when we accepted the handbook from Area 72,and then again when we added the handbook to the Area Website. A group of people is more likely to catch any typos andslight changes in wording than one individual. You also get aconsensus of all the places that a passed motion will changethe handbook, and what wording will take place. Face-to-facemeetings could be held on Friday night of Area Quarterliesand Assemblies, like the Finance Committee does. Any othercommittee communication could be done by phone, mail, or e-mail.

Pg. S.37 of the 2004-2005 Service Manual under AreaNewsletters or Bulletins states "as in most A.A. service activi-ties, it has been found prudent to make a committee (ratherthan one or two individuals) responsible for the format, plan-ning, and content." We believe that the handbook carries moreimportance than a newsletter in that it dictates how we do busi-ness at the Area Level, therefore it would be prudent that acommittee would be responsible for these updates.

P re Conference Assembliescome in different sizes,shapes, and ideas, but they all

seem to have the same commonthreads, the first being to “educatethe delegate” on how the area feelsabout the upcoming agenda itemsfor the General Service Conference.

I use the term “educate the dele-gate” in all sincerity. Past delegatesin my area and other areas of thePacific Region passed the term on tome, explaining that this was one ofthe most precious and serious com-mitments a delegate can have. Thisidea of educating sends a messagethat home group members alongwith others from the area, truly dohave an active voice in AA as awhole. It also says that as the dele-gate, I understood that I did not nec-essarily know how the groups in myarea were going to respond to anygiven agenda item. I needed to lis-ten to them very carefully.

Another thing I became veryaware of is the fact that I didn't nec-essarily know what items the areawas going to be interested in. Ineeded to let them “educate” me asto what was important to them andtheir groups.

As I began this process with thearea at the pre-conference assembly,a remarkable thing started to hap-pen.We had open, spontaneous, andheart felt conversation.We talkedabout some of the background,questions were asked and answered,and as the conversation progressed,I began to get an idea of how thearea felt.When we were finishedwith each topic or agenda item, Itold them what I heard them say tome, how I thought they felt, andasked them if I had it right. This can-not be accomplished with a “oneway” communication. It must beopen dialog with the delegate, muchlike visiting at home in the livingroom.

Each delegate goes to the

General Service Conference with theright of decision. This is imperativebecause the Conference makesdecisions for AA as a whole, directlyfor the US and Canada, indirectly forthe world. This is so importantbecause what might be good for ushere in Area 92 might not work at allin some area across the map.

Therefore, as I said, the dele-gates are charged with making poli-cy, or not making policy, for every-one. If I go to the conference and donot share how my area feels about

something, and if the other dele-gates don't share their area's ideas,how am I to know if something willor might not work elsewhere? It isthis wonderful sharing from themicrophone about how everyoneback home feels about an item thatgives the delegates their basis fordeliberation and decision.

Some folks and some homegroups don't quite understand howto get through this mass of back-ground and agenda items. Here aresome suggestions laced with experi-ence that might be of help. Readthrough the material you have. Don't

worry if you can't understand it all.Think about what an agenda

item will really accomplish. Talkabout it with your group and/or at adistrict meeting. Ask any questionsyou have at the pre-conferenceassembly. Then, armed with yourinformation, you can finish your dis-cussion at the assembly and can“educate” your delegate to the bestof your ability. If you practice this awhile, you might find it will workwell for you.

The General Service Conferenceagenda is the main focus for the pre-conference assembly. However, inour region, the Pacific Region, theareas also address local or areabusiness (including motions) afterthe pre-conference portion is fin-ished. (This is true also of manyareas outside our region though it’snot possible to quote exact numbersat this time .) This is the second ofthe common threads that bind theidea of a pre-conference assembly.

Some areas have a two-dayassembly, some a three. In theseways, the pre-conference assemblyseems to be varied. Different thingsare done at different assemblies, andthe agendas can be very differentfor each assembly. So say the Marchagenda can be the pre-conferenceagenda first, area motions second,no reports or limited reports, noworkshops, speaker or not, etc.October can include all the reports,area motions, workshops, GSRschool, speaker, etc. An area can setit up however they would like.

Please come and be a part ofarea 92's second-ever pre-confer-ence assembly. The rewards aregreat. It will connect you to AA as awhole. It will help your home groupgrow and be stronger. It will giveyou a wonderful sense of belongingto and participating in AlcoholicsAnonymous.

A bout eight months ago, the Trentwood Group ofAlcoholics Anonymous ventured into a new andexciting method of carrying the message. The

group voted to start taking trips to outlying areas aroundSpokane roughly an hour away as a home group. TheTrentwood Group invites anyone interested in attending.Groups of drunks board cars, trucks, and vans in twos,threes, and fours, and sit in cars together discussingwhat it was like, what happened, and what it's like nowon the way to the meeting. It's a great opportunity tocarry the message and the newcomer to the meeting atthe same time.

The Taking A Trip meeting is for the newcomer. Iremember when I first started coming to the program inPullman. There was a group of guys going down to atreatment center in Orofino to carry the message to thestill suffering alcoholic. I don't know if they knew it ornot, but they had a still suffering alcoholic in the car withthem. As they shared on the trip down I heard them talk-ing and laughing about things I couldn't talk about orlaugh about. It was like an intensive meeting where I gotto know some old timers who were willing to go to anylengths for their sobriety. Being a part of that trip helpedme see what this new way of living was all about. It wasreally simple. It wasn't until I saw them outside of a meet-

ing doing service work that it hit me: I really wantedwhat these guys had. They didn't just speak eloquently inmeetings and say things like “Keep Coming Back” or “ItWorks if you work it”. They took action. They SHOWEDme how it works. Now our group does the same thingwith the newcomers in our area.

So far, Taking A Trip has visited groups in SpiritLake, Athol, Pullman, Deer Park, Cheney, Elk, Plummer,and a meeting way up in the woods between Coeur d'Alene and Silver Mountain.We have had some prettycool experiences. On the trip back from Elk one of thecars hit a deer! Then right after one of the biggest snow-falls of the year, nearly 40 alcoholics willing to go to anylengths (even in the snow) met to drive to Spirit Lake.Last week we had a couple people from Spirit Lake showup at the Trentwood Group on their own trip! The meet-ing in the North Idaho wilderness was awesome! Whenwe got out to basically the middle of nowhere a memberof AA had a cabin in the “backyard” where he had cuttrees in half and made giant benches around a hugebonfire that lit up a circle of close to 50 AA's sharingtheir experience, strength, and hope along with hotdogs, marshmallows, and tons of other food! One of thenew gals from our group had 60 days at the meeting andit reminded me that any lengths is a long way alone butsitting around a fire and in a car with other drunksreminded me that the trudging doesn't have to be donemiserable or alone.

The meetings have been really cool and it's been agreat opportunity for fellowship and unity within thegroup. Well… it depends on what onemeans by “events,”“functions,” and“official.”

Let's look at the differencebetween an official AA function suchas the International Conference anda daily AA meeting. There are rela-tively few AA functions which arecertified and supported by theGeneral Service Office (GSO),whereas there are thousands of regu-lar, closed AA meetings every day.And there are also lots of “irregular”AA meetings or “events” such asbanquets, camp outs, roundups, andconventions (aside from “theInternational,” of course) that are notsanctioned by GSO, the GeneralService Conference, or any otherbody in AA's service structure.

The guidelines from GSO vari-ously define such non-service eventsas: conventions, conferences, ban-quets, and “almost any AA get-together beyond the group-meetinglevel.”

For the purposes of discussion inGSO's Guidelines on Conventions,the word “convention” is used tocover what we often refer to asroundups and camp outs. A camp outis typically open to non-AAs, fees orother contribution might be collect-ed from non-members, and a campout isn't held as a result of policiesinherent in the service structure.

Now let's look at what deter-mines if a picnic, camp out or roundup “is AA” or whether it's just a partywhere lots of attendees happen to be

members of AA. Perhaps TraditionThree (long form) could be a start-ing point in answering this question:

Our membership ought toinclude all who suffer from alco-holism. Hence we may refusenone who wish to recover. Norought A.A. membership everdepend upon money or conform-ity. Any two or three alcoholicsgathered together for sobrietymay call themselves an AA group,provided that, as a group, theyhave no other affiliation.

One common criterion for treat-ing an event as “AA” versus “not-AA”—and whether to interact with itfinancially, announce it at meetings,list it in the Grapevine, newsletters,web sites—is often evaluated by ask-ing this question: “Does it include oneor more AA meetings?” If it does, itshould probably be treated like anyother meeting regardless of whetherit's hosted by a home group, a dis-trict, a committee, or just a gatheringof AA members. Many regular AAmeetings aren't registered as groups.Knowing that, one could say that aroundup or camp out is an AA meet-ing that meets regularly...once a year.

Of course, this simple criterioncan easily get complicated.What ifthe event is co-sponsored by AA andAl-anon? What if the event's activities(beyond the holding of AA meetings,that is) affect other groups or AA asa whole?

No doubt there are as manyanswers to this question as there areindividual situations. In each case,the AA members involved have toevaluate the issues at hand in accor-dance with the principles held in ourTraditions, seek the counsel of theirpeers, contact GSO for additionalexperience and historical perspec-tive, etc.

El había encontrado elmomento correcto para tener mi aten-ción cautiva (dos por cuatro experien-cia). Cuando él explicó, lo que sig-nificó era que necesité poner los prin-cipios de AA enfrente de mi personal-idad, que otra personalidad de gente

en la sobriedad quehago sólo tengo lassituaciones. Si yo nobebí estas situacionesllegarían a ser vale. Eldía ha llegado a sertarde y yo espero conansia reunir mismuchos amigos en elde la Asamblea de laConferencia Pre ende tierra Rica. Mimeta deberá venircon una actitud quepermite mí ver elpositivo, tenga lavisión para el negociode Area 92 y la hojacon un corazón unifi-cado que todo esvale. Siempre tener

una mente abierta como nosotrosconducimos el negocio de Area 92. Elnegocio de Area 92 deberán poner lanorma y para sostener los grupos ylos distritos como ellos hacen el 12Paso trabajo de AlcoholicosAnónimos.

W hen Bill W. wrote the essayon Concept 9, I believe itcontained the true

description of a Pillar in AlcoholicsAnonymous. Men, like Don P., JohnG., Shorty H., Hal C., Fran P., Eric B.,men who have had such a tremen-dous affect on my sobriety, both per-sonal and in service. Men who wereknowledgeable but humble, gentleyet firm, understanding but commit-ted, patient, tolerantand open-minded.

They all lovedthe life AlcoholicsAnonymous hadgiven them. This wasalways apparent bytheir example andfearless way of walk-ing through life onlife's terms. It alwaysseemed that whenour paths crossedthere was a lapse intime before I under-stood or could livethe principles theytaught.

The willingnessto become teachable seemed tocome with claw marks and scarredfingers. I had always heard thewords to “place principles beforepersonalities” so many times duringmy journey in AA. I was good atplacing the principles of AA beforeyour personality and I continued tolet self will run riot along with opencriticism of others. Then one day…

My sponsor asked me when Iwas going to change and learn what“principles before personalities”really meant. He had found the rightmoment to have my captive attention(two by four experience).

As he explained, what it meantwas that I needed to put the princi-ples of AA in front of my personality,that other people's personality was

really none of my business. That all Icould really handle was dealing withmy own situations and personality.

From that day, it has seemed thatwhen my personality is in the back-ground, your personality becameokay. My teachers in AlcoholicsAnonymous could live this in such away that it became unnoticeable toall those around them. I was taughtthat I had problems when I drank but

in sobriety I wouldonly have situations.If I did not drinkthese situationswould become okay.The day has becomelate and I look for-ward to meeting mymany friends at thePre-ConferenceAssembly in Rich-land. My goal is tocome with an attitudethat lets me see thepositive, have visionfor the business ofArea 92 and leavewith a unified heartthat all is okay. To

always have an open mind as weconduct the business of Area 92. Thebusiness of Area 92 is to set policyand to support the groups and dis-tricts as they do the 12 Step work ofAlcoholics Anonymous.

My responsibility is to show upand not criticize, but to share experi-ence as we discuss and debate thepolicy of Area 92. I hope to alwaysremember that the collective con-science of the groups continues tobe the final and best voice forAlcoholics Anonymous.

So I close and thank you for theprivilege of sharing my scatteredthoughts today and to realize that allis truly okay as long as I do not takethat first drink.Thank you, Rusty K.
