Pearl Nix Parkway Wall may get colorful mosaic mural Don’t be surprised to see a colorful mural going up during the next few months on a section of the Pearl Nix Parkway barrier wall beside Melrose Apartments. Artist Mary Hull (who teaches art at Harrison Square Apart-ments) has created a mural design (at right) that will use mosiac tile. The mural project is funded by the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce’s Vision 2030 Public Art, and is part of a county-wide effort to brighten the land-scape and inspire with artful expressions.

WANTED: Kids, join the SHINE program at Harrison Square Apartments For kids K-12, get in on the after-school fun at Harrison Square with SHINE – movie events, cookie decorating, arts and crafts, and an upcoming Easter Egg Hunt. SHINE is a faith-based, after-school program that offers homework-help, arts and crafts, Led by Amy and Jack Bentley, volunteers from In His Name Church; and tutors from University of North Georgia.WHEN: Currently, SHINE occurs on Tuesday and Thursdays from 3:30-5pm. Soon, it will expand to four days a week, Mon-day – Thursday. Flyers will be distributed when the new schedule is established. Also, special Saturday activities are planned once a month such as: movie events, cookie decorating, arts and crafts, and the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 19th. These event details will be posted at the community center.WHERE: SHINE meets on the Harrison Square playground when weather permits and at the Harrison Square Community Center on wet and cold days. Will, MLK and Pine St. renovations are underway now Residents living in Will, MLK and Pine Street are in the midst of a complete interior renovation, including new heat and air systems, new applicances, wall paint, granite countertops and other amenities. The Will Street phase is complete and work at the other sites is underway. Watch this area to see exterior beautification work in the near future. Below: Talk a peek inside the renovated apartments. The floors are covered with heavy vinyl that gives the appear-ance of wood and stone – while being super easy to clean and extremely durable to scuffs and foot traffic wear. The kitchen appliances complement the new cabinets and granite counter tops, and the central heat and air system venting is concealed within a bookcase. The bathrooms are fitted with sturdy and efficient hardware.

HUD names Gainesville Housing Authority a ‘High Performer” The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Develop-ment (HUD) rated the Gainesville Housing Authority as a “High Performer” (Public Housing Assessment System, PHAS, for FY 2015). Announced 12/21/2015 The assessment reviews critical areas of operation, includ-ing physical conditions, management, financial responsibility, occupancy rate and adherence to federal guidelines. The “High Performer” designation is the highest ranking awarded to a public housing agency with the assessment.

Permits for outdoor gatherings If you plan on having a outdoor gathering on one of the Gainesville Housing Authority campuses, you must obtain a permit from the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) and permission from the GHA. YES! success: Expanding the club from Atlanta St. to Harrison Square ApartmentsThe YES! club (Young Entrepreneurs Succeed) launched at Atlanta Street (Green Hunter Homes) has proven such a success that the club was recently expanded into Harrison Square Apartments. The goal of the club is to prepare young GHA residents to be young entrepreneurs through direct training, field trips and meeting local successful people in a variety of businesses. The club is led by Jananne Waller, who also leads other educational programs at GHA.
