GLORY DAYS ‘DINING FOR DOLLARS’ FUNDRAISER CHANGES FOR 2019 For the past several years, AWS has participated in the Glory Days fundraiser for the entire year. Supporters saved their Glory Days receipts for the year and turned them in to board members/shelter staff, by mail or at the drop boxes at Petco and United Bank in Charles Town. AWS benefited each year from the 10% proceeds from each receipt. The rules and regulations have changed for 2019. Each organization can only collect receipts 4 times a year with 2 months time between each event. AWS participated in March and we are now gearing up for June, Sept and December. Only receipts from those months will now count towards our fundraising totals. Please spread the word and have your family and friends enjoy lunch or dinner at Glory Days and collect their receipts for June, September and December. Donation boxes will again be at Petco by the cat cages, United Bank in Charles Town, the shelter or give to a board member or mail to AWS, PO Box 147, Charles Town, WV 25414

Dining to Donate at Applebee’s will remain the first Thursday of each month. Make sure you mention to your server that you are there for dining to Donate for

Animal Welfare Society. Your receipt should also note D2D on it, which means Dining to Donate was designated for your bill.

Dine at both establishmentsand help AWS at the same time!!

AMAZONSMILE - YOU SHOP, AMAZON GIVESWhen you wish to shop for items on Amazon, just go to their site: https://smile.amazon.com and locate Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County on the drop down menu. When you place an order, at no cost to you, Amazon will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible Amazon Smile Purchases to AWS. What an easy way to give!

Each year, AWS holds 2 Dinner/Auctions at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races around Halloween and Valentine’s Day. The last two events were held on October 27, 2018 and February 9, 2019. This past year’s Paws and Claws Howl-O-Ween Dinner and auction saw many people dressing up and entering the costume contest. Each year, the costumes become more and more intricate and entertaining. As with both events, a silent auction and live auction kept people busy bidding against each other and entering raffles and enjoying a wonderful buffet dinner. The Valentine’s event also offered roses to be purchased for loved ones with the chance of winning a piece of jewelry.

Both events are organized by a committee of board members and volunteers. The committee spends three months or more soliciting auction items and gift certificates from businesses and individuals in the tri-state area. Dinners, entertainment, wine and beer tastings, services, jewelry, art work, collectibles and antiques are just a few of the wonderful items that can be bid on each year. A typical auction will have 75 to 100 silent auction items and 8 to 10 live auction items. Volunteer professional auctioneers, Marty Kable and Densil Nibert, work the crowd to get the highest bids for each live auction item. Both events are extremely successful with approximately $25,000 raised at each one. The money raised goes directly towards caring for the animals at the shelter and providing funds for the low cost spay/neuter program, and any renovations or maintenance of the shelter. The following page lists the many businesses and individuals whose sponsorships helped make these events a success. Please support these wonderful sponsors. AWS has been holding these auctions for over 10 years. If you have not had a chance to attend one, put it on your “To Do” list. The Paws and Claws Howl-O-Ween Dinner and Auction is October 26th, 2019 and the Valentine’s Dinner and Auction is February 8th, 2020.

Homing Pigeon finds his way home thanks to AWSThis homing pigeon was found weak and unable to fly in Charles Town. Animal Control was notified and it was picked up. A few days later it was transferred to AWS. The owner had been previously found from information on a leg band. This bird was only 5 months old and hadn’t returned from a training flight close to his home in Alabama. Arrangements were made and a USPS approved bio-box was secured for safe shipment.

“Homie” was shipped on a Monday afternoon and arrived safe at home early on Wednesday. No one knows how this guy got over 700 miles from home.

Southern States in Ranson WV, was the setting for the Spring Rabies Clinic on March 16th. The line began at 9 am and there was a steady flow of dogs and cats up until noon. Dr Alice Sudduth, DVM,

donated her time to administer the rabies vaccines along with assistance from Bill Hurd, AWS Shelter Manager, and Board Member, Janet Bailey. 200 cats and dogs were vaccinated by the end of the clinic. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped and especially to Southern States for supplying their facility to accommodate

the Rabies Clinic. A fall clinic will be held in September.

Geri Wood with Friends Fur Life Rescue picked up around 550 lbs of dog food from AWS. It was delivered

to NC to help shelters and rescues that lost everything during the hurricane.

With the help of the Parkersburg Community Foundation Ruth Hornbrook Memorial Grant and other grants, the shelter was able to receive a new handicapped ramp. It replaced the 1999 built ramp. The ramp is made of Trex with anti- skid and the railings are vinyl wrapped to make it maintenance free. Solar lights are also on several posts. Thanks to Mike DeCelie for the construction.

A LUCKY CAT! By Bill Hurd“Brooklyn” came to the shelter last October with two very small kittens. The three of them were left in a taped box on the porch. As in many cases, the kittens were adopted and Brooklyn, the mom, remained at the shelter. In January, a young man and his mother visited to look at the cats. A few minutes after they went in the cat room I heard an uproar and went to investigate. The first thing I heard from the man and his mother was that Brooklyn was their cat. The story got much better and seemed impossible. The family had a tragic house fire last March. Unfortunately, all of their cats died in the fire and were

identified, but one. The one that was not accounted for was a young tortoise shell that had yet to be spayed. I’m thinking well, I doubt if it is their cat, but a new cat will ease some pain and this sweet cat will get a home? The son began to show dozens of photos on his phone of the missing cat. The more pictures I saw the more my jaw dropped. Every unique mark on Brooklyn matched the photos. We received a nice donation, Brooklyn went back to her loving home and I ate a generous helping of crow.

Easter Flower Sale Goes Indoors This YearAWS was prepared this year for any kind of weather with the help of Town Run Tap House and Community Pub. The beautiful spring flowers were displayed on stage with the help of showcase lighting arranged by Todd Cotgreave, owner of the Tap House. Saturday brought sunshine so the sale went outside, with all flowers being sold before the end of the day. Carrie Yarnall, Mrs. West Virginia Globe, 2018, (pictured below) helped with the sale on Saturday. Thanks to all other volunteers who

helped this weekend! Thanks to all who bought t-shirts and other merchandise, baked goods, and all the colorful potted flowers. Special thanks to Todd and Jessie who provided our venue again this year. This is one of two flower sales per year.

This year, we initiated a Community Cat Spay Program, which funds an $80 cat spay coupon once a week. The City of Ranson has partnered with us in this program with a $1,500 grant. We have calculated that if 52 female cats are allowed to reproduce for the next 3-4 years, they and their offspring could produce thousands of cats that would probably not find homes. The $80 coupons are awarded by a lottery drawing done each Saturday at the shelter. If you want to join the drawing, please contact the shelter at 304-725-0589 during our open hours.
