Potentate’s MessageThe first thing I would like to do is thank every-

one for a great installation weekend. It was greatto see how many came out and thanks to all thatmade the installation weekend a success.

I would like to recognize Dave Fraser for all hishard work and dedication to the nobles and thechildren of Philae. I would like to wish Dave allthe best in his retirement as our recorder.

I would also congratulate all the nobles newlyelected and I am looking to working with them.

Over the past 2 years the long range planningcommittee have been working on a 5 year strate-gic plan this plan was voted on by the nobility inour December meeting and passed so now it istime to put the Plan into action some of the areasthe plan identifies that we need to work on aremembership, communications, leadership andfamily involvement just to mention a few . Theexecutive has been meeting and will beginimplanting the plan.

The parade season is just about here and achance to get out in front of the public and fly thefez. I am looking forward to getting out and see-

ing everyone.Since the installation I visited some clubs and

attended the north east association mid wintermeeting in Rutland Vermont where plans for thenorth east field days were unveiled it promises tobe a fun weekend for all. I would encourage allwho can attend to do so we talk about Shrinershaving fun while helping kids well this what theywere talking about. There will be more info com-ing out for all that are interested.

There is a couple of events coming up soon onthe 28th of April there will be a stated meeting atthe temple at 10 am and on the 16th of June wewill be having a ceremonial to be followed byShriners day at the temple it is open to the publicand all are encouraged to attend.

Treasurer’s Report

Philae Shriners

Official Call of the PotentateNotice is hereby given of a stated meeting of Philae Shriners to be held on

Saturday the 28th of April 2018

at 10 am at the Temple

at 3530 Connolly street Halifax Nova Scotia.

David Penney, Recorder Ed Corbett, Potentate

Greetings fellow Nobles. The Springseason is now well upon us and I trustthat all are ready to knuckle down andget back to work to support our won-derful fraternity.

Because it is the spring, we are stillearly in our fiscal year, and there is notmuch to report upon from the financialfront. To date, we have been paying ourregular expenses, and we remain wellwithin budget at this point in the year. Our new Recorder is doing anadmirable job fitting in to his new sur-roundings and, with assistance of ourcapable office staff, we are in goodhands. We are even looking at the possi-bilities of some new initiatives thatshould generate some cost and efficien-cy improvements over the next while. We are also going to attempt to have theannual financial statements, as preparedby our external accountants, completedearlier this year so that Nobles will have

a better idea of the previous year oper-ating results much sooner than in thepast.

I would encourage all Nobles to takepart in Philae fundraising, along withthe more local efforts produced by ourClubs and Units. Fundraising isimmensely important. Without it, wewould cease to be able to contribute toour primary mission, the care of ourShrine Children. At this point, I wouldrefer the Nobles to the reports of thevarious Chairs (Calendars, Fezeroo, etc.) for updates on specific projects.

Late last year, I reported on theShriner’s International directive to havethe individual Temple Treasurer addedas a signing officer on each of the Cluband Unit bank accounts. Please remem-ber that that this is an initiative to pro-tect the continuity of accounts shouldsomething happen to a Club officer, especially in those instances where

there may be only one individual desig-nated as a signing officer. In no wayshould this be looked at as an attempt tocontrol the operations or independenceof the Clubs and Units. More on thiswill be issued from the Recorder’sOffice shortly.

Finally, I would remind all Club andUnit Executives, and in particular theirTreasurers, to make sure that that therequired reports to the Temple are com-pleted and submitted. The forms werecirculated as part of the informationrequest package sent out for the TempleDirectory. Again, you will be hearingfrom the Recorder’s Office on this item.

Please be safe and enjoy your sum-mer.

Yours in the Faith

Minutes of Stated Meeting & Ceremonial

Philae PhunniesHearing ProblemsAn elderly man was having hearing

problems and went to see a specialist. The doctor fitted him with some hear-ing aids that brought his hearing backto full strength.

After a few weeks the man cameback to make sure the new equipmentwas working properly, which it was.

The hearing specialist said, “It allseems perfect. Your family should be delighted you can heareverything now.”

“Oh no,” the man responded. “I haven’t told any of them.I just sit quietly, listening carefully. I’ve changed my willfour times.”

Hospital RegulationsHospital rules state that patients checking out must have

a wheelchair. One day a newly graduated nurse assistant came into the

room to find an elderly man fully dressed. He was sitting onthe bedside chair, with a piece of packed luggage at his side, all ready to go.

When he was shown the wheelchair, he was adamant thathe was fully capable of walking himself to the parking lot.

But the assistant told him rules were rules, so he relent-ed and let her wheel him out.

In the elevator, the assistant asked the elderly man if hiswife was coming to meet him.

“I don’t think so,” he replied. “It takes her awhile to

change her clothes, so she’s probably still upstairs in thebathroom taking off of her hospital gown and gettingdressed.”

Legal ConsultationA man phones his attorney and queries, “How much

would it cost me to have you answer three questions?“That would be $300,” the lawyer replies. The man says, “That’s an awful lot of money for three

questions, isn’t it?”“I guess so," says the attorney. "What’s your third ques-

tion?”

He says, “Mom, I don’t want to go back. Please don'tmake me. I hate school!”

She says, “Don't be silly. It can't be that bad. I bet youcan't even think of two reasons not to go.”

He says, “Really, I mean it! All the kids hate me. And theteachers all think I'm stupid.”

She says, “Well, those aren't really good reasons. Maybeyou can try harder.”

He says, “No, I don't want to go. Give me two good rea-sons I should.”

She replies, “Well, first of all, you’re almost years 60old. And second, you’re the principal.”

“The Year of plus one”

I’m afraid I’m off to a little slowerstart than I would like, and I apologizefor that, but I think we are makingprogress. Despite that there is muchgood news.

We started the year off with 749members. The 18 we brought in inDecember were credited to January sowe’re off to a great start for 2018. Wehad 1 restoration but sadly we lost 4Nobles wha passed to the Grand Lodgeabove and we had one resignation.

Another great thing, Noble RonClowes won a national membershipaward for being top line signer for manyof our new Nobles which is good forPhilae as well.

Despite the slow start we are movingforward on a number of things;

1) The Divan has been activelysupporting membership initiatives andwe are currently recruiting sub chairsfor recruitment, reinstatement andretention.

2) We are implementing theImperial “roadmap to membership suc-cess”.

3) We are looking for member-ship chairs in each of the clubs to dis-seminate information from the Sub-chairs

4) We have applied over 30decals to the back of GTL trailers toincrease visibility.

5) We are working on a face bookproject where each club and unit willhave a face book page which will beupdated by posts to the Philae face bookpage as well as locally.

6) We have begun approachingthe units including the new fine spiritstasting unit to see what the divan can doto help them get People

7) We will be having an open cer-emonial on Shriners Day June 16th

8) We have organized a dinner

theatre for May 5th, (details in the mag-azine and on facebook)

9) We are working on a presenta-tion for Nobles to take to their lodgesand other community organizations

So, we are getting some stuff doneand we are well on our way to the 25new member goal set by Tampa. Weshould reach that without a problem, butit would be great to get a plus 1 for theyear!

Membership is everyone’s job and I

encourage all of you to log on toWebfez and look at the IMRU programwhere you can refer Shriners and non-Shriners to receive information aboutus. Also, there is other information onmembership there, you can update yourown information and other things. Iencourage everyone to look at it.

I think that’s it for now so let’s makemembership a priority this year, letsmake it the “year of plus 1”

Yours in the faithIllustrious Sir Mike Schmid
