A Message from the Executive Director

ARF’s proactive commitment to reducing the number of animals entering public shelters and finding homes through collaborative efforts is highlighted on page ten. Partnerships like our one with Pawsitively S.A.F.E. are instrumental in reducing feral cat populations and allowing community trap-and-release groups to focus on trapping more felines for spay/neuter and medical care. As partners, we unite in saving more lives and helping these precious animals find new loving homes.

Prior to adoption at ARF, each beloved rescue animal undergoes a miraculous transformation. I am incredibly proud of the medical treatment and meticulous care that our dogs and cats receive after being pulled from public facilities as they run out of time. Be sure to read page eight with the story of our beautiful Swanson and her six amazing Doberman puppies recently rescued from Sutter Animal Services. Swanson faced unique medical challenges, including a genetic clotting issue. After additional accommodations and testing for both her and her litter, Swanson blossomed into a strong and affectionate dog and was adopted by a caring family. It’s thrilling to stay in touch with our adoptor families and watch their growth and transformation.

Recently, on a frigid cold and wet night, a litter of

German Shepherd mix puppies were abandoned in a cardboard box and left in a public shelter’s parking lot. These precious pups were only 10 days old, and in order to survive needed round-the-clock care and bottle feeding. The shelter contacted ARF, knowing we had the medical staff and foster teams available to care for the delicate pups. Today, we are happy to say that Lego, Fisher Price, Hasbro, and Mattel are now all safe with full bellies. Can we count on your help to rescue more puppies and kittens through your support of Animals on Broadway? This fun-filled festival and pet walk is on Saturday, May 19 and an exciting way to save lives. I encourage you to create a walk team (or a virtual walk team) with your friends, neighbors, or coworkers or consider a gift to help rescue more animals like the little ones abandoned in a parking lot. To learn more about their plight and how you can help, visit https://arf.donordrive.com/participant/bicker.

We remain deeply grateful for your continuing support of ARF. Together, we are making great strides in animal rescue and positive outcomes in our many programs focusing on People Rescuing Animals… Animals Rescuing People®.

Spring brings one of ARF’s busiest seasons with thousands of

unwanted litters of puppies and kittens flooding shelters due to young pets found homeless or abandoned and families unable to afford the high cost of spay/neuter.

Recent tragedies in Parkland, FL and around the nation highlight the role therapy animals play following times of crisis and stress. Whether offering comfort following disasters or lifting spirits of those battling illness, the human-animal bond can help heal.

ARF is a proud leader in animal therapy with our Pet Hug Pack® serving as a national model for visiting animal programs. Our special animals (not just limited to dogs!) visit hospitals and nursing homes, where they gently bring happiness and a healing touch. They frequent UC Berkeley and high school campuses during finals week and other stressful times. They even make their way

to Camp ARF (see page 15), teaching future animal-lovers how to interact with four-legged friends. Every year, thousands of children, seniors, veterans, and others in need come face-to-furry-face with members of the Pet Hug Pack® and walk away with extra love in their heart.

Think you might have a future therapy animal living under your roof? Visit arflife.org for how you and your pet can bring unconditional love to people in need.

ARF Pets and Vets Alums Giving BackGraduation from our Pets and Vets program doesn’t always mean goodbye for our veteran-rescue dog teams. A growing number of graduates now return to ARF as training volunteers. “This is their chance to give back to a program they feel has given them so much - their dog, increased confidence, and independence,” ARF Pets and Vets Program Manager Merritt Rollins said. These veterans, many of whom suffer from service-related conditions such as PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, or anxiety often speak about how they and their dogs both benefit from training. “Many veterans have a hard time leaving the safety and security of their home,” Merritt said. “The fact that they now want to return to the social environment of training means they received more than just a service dog.” Pets and Vets dogs Finnegan and Skyler train toward their service

certifications with their veterans.4

Sue Cross laughs that her upbringing with horses and cows in Connecticut led to her love of big dogs. But her compassion for all animals brought her to ARF’s foster program in the ‘90s, and she’s now volunteering in almost every area of the organization.

“I loved the philosophy behind ARF and really wanted to be a part of it,” Sue explained. “I wanted to learn everything there is to know when I volunteered.”

Sue has volunteered in almost every area, from giving tours and helping with events to microchipping animals and cooking chicken for dogs with sensitive digestion. She worked with the original visiting therapy animal team, now the Pet Hug Pack®. Her late dog Daisy, a Leonberger, was one of the program’s original members, a legacy which continues today with Cooper, a Great Pyrenees.

Of all her volunteering jobs, Sue treasures educating people about ARF’s diverse programs. She continues learning every time she enters the building and encourages potential volunteers to do the same.

“Give it a try, and try everything,” she said. “Just experience it.”

Stars to the Rescue XXVIIThe stars were shining bright as ARF hosted its 27th annual Stars to the Rescue musical gala in late January. Attendees at the sold-out show enjoyed heart-pumping performances by 2016 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Chicago, Grammy-nominated country artist Cam, Phantom of the Opera legend Franc D’Ambrosio, and more. Tony La Russa also presented the 2017 Evie and Hope Awards and shared exciting news about the growing Pets and Vets program before a packed house. Thank you to all attendees, performers, volunteers, and sponsors who made this a fabulous night to remember.

Saving Swanson an Albino Dobermanwith Six Special Puppies

With her majestic white coat, soulful eyes, and gentle, nurturing personality, Swanson seemed the picture of health. But this three-year-old Doberman Pinscher and recent mother of six puppies had a serious medical condition buried in her DNA. Like many animals inbred for rare appearance or traits, such as albinism, Swanson was also affected by other recessive traits that compromised her health—in this case, a serious clotting disease. ARF was concerned not only for Swanson, but also for her puppies, who may have inherited the disease.

Dobermans are one of several breeds of dog particularly susceptible to von Willebrand’s disease, which reduces the body’s ability to produce platelet-binding proteins that cause blood to clot. A lack of clotting leads to increased bleeding after normal scrapes or cuts, and can greatly increase surgical risks.

Fortunately, responsible breeding can reduce the risk of this dangerous disease. But Swanson was rescued from a “backyard breeding” operation. She was bred specifically for her white color, and by breeding her primarily for color, they put her and her offspring at risk—Swanson’s puppies might not only receive their mom’s beauty and personality, but also her disease. ARF had a looming challenge: seven spay/neuter surgeries on the horizon for Swanson and her puppies.

ARF’s clinic formed a plan to assess the puppies’ surgical risk. The veterinary team tested the tiny pups, and fortunately, only one was affected by her mother’s disease. Transfusion of a special blood product allowed ARF to safely perform surgery on Swanson and the affected pup. The mom and her affected pup were cleared for adoption with the rest of their litter, requiring only an additional education on von Willebrand’s disease for potential adopters.

Soon, all six puppies were up for adoption and found happy homes. And Swanson, no longer facing life as a victim of unethical breeding, found her own happy ending with a loving family dedicated to caring for her and her special needs.

8

Page 9: Spring 2018 From Feral to Family - ARF | Home · Pawsitively S.A.F.E. The Power ... little ones a great start. This is a perfect event for children as well, with games, prizes, and

“Backyard Breeding” refers to deliberately breeding animals without regulation or oversight, frequently prioritizing economic profit over an animal’s health. Inbreeding for rare and desired traits (such as Swanson’s white color) can result in genetic defects, higher risk of cancers, and shortened lifespan. In addition, common unsanitary breeding environments place animals at risk for parasites or illnesses like Parvovirus, which kills thousands of young dogs every year. Many backyard breeders fail to disclose these conditions, leaving adopters with unexpected veterinary expenses and the heartbreak of watching a beloved pet suffer.

Spreading the word of these dangers is the best way to eliminate backyard breeding. Adopt pets from local shelters and encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to spay and neuter their pets. California is already joining the fight with the recently passed AB 485, requiring pet stores to sell only rescue or shelter animals in need of homes. ARF supports legislative efforts to improve the care and welfare of animals and hopes to see the end of unethical breeding practices, which place animals like Swanson at risk.

What can we do to stop backyard breeding?

From Feral to Family:ARF Partners with Pawsitively S.A.F.E.

A new ARF partnership with Pawsitively S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals from Euthanasia) is making a big difference in efforts to control feral cat populations. For more than six months, ARF has partnered with the East Contra Costa County trap-and-release group by facilitating the adoption of socialized kittens.

“It’s been more successful than I could have imagined,” said Julie Rasmussen who founded the organization with partner Holly Cuciz. “Basically, we’ve been able to ramp up what we were doing, and save four to five times as many kittens from the streets.”

Holly agrees that leaving the time-consuming process of adoption marketing to ARF allows the group to cover more territory, resulting not only in higher adoption rates but also a greater number of adult cats spayed and neutered within colonies.

Pawsitively S.A.F.E. fosters kittens following ARF’s kitten socialization guidelines until they are old enough to spay or neuter and assess for behavior. They are then ready to hit ARF’s adoption floor and find a permanent family.

“Any time we can increase adoptions while decreasing feral cat birth rates, it’s a win,” said ARF Animal Programs Director Tracy Gimbel. “But it’s really a victory for these tiny kittens who find safety off the streets in loving homes.”

Save Furry Lives from the Comfort of Your HomeWhether they’re too young to be adopted, recovering from an injury or illness, or just need the love and stability of a temporary home, many animals coming to ARF need a little time in foster care before they are ready for their forever homes. Our amazing network of foster families gives these pets the love they deserve while caring for them in a home environment. ARF is always looking to expand its network! If you would be interested in temporarily taking in dogs, cats, puppies, or kittens as a foster family, sign up for an orientation at arflife.org/foster.

We are truly grateful for the enduring commitment and support many of our friends offer ARF throughout the year to bring animals and people together.

Your vision and legacy in remembering ARF in your will or trust transforms the lives of countless animals and people for years to come. Legacy gifts provide meaningful support, ensuring ARF can continue our life-saving work in the future, while fulfilling your wishes and financial goals. Legacy support may include bequests, gifts of life insurance, retirement plans, IRA’s, or other support. Your legacy to ARF will one day provide a lasting promise of hope for so many animals and people in need.

We invite you to join our Legacy Society, ARF’s Circle of Compassion, by letting us know if you have included ARF in your estate planning so that we may express our appreciation. I would be happy to speak to you personally about how you can provide a lifeline to animals in need for generations to come.

What Will Your Legacy Be?

Purina Dog Chow Salutes Pets and VetsARF is proud to partner with Purina for their Dog Chow Service Dog Salute. From Independence Day through Veterans Day, Dog Chow Complete Adult with Chicken packages will feature Pets and Vets program participants Michael and his service dog in

training Zoe. Purina will donate a portion of proceeds from these specially marked bags to this program that pairs veterans with rescue dogs and provides free service-skills training. Thanks to Purina and ARF, more veterans experiencing service-related difficulties such as PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety, and more will receive the therapeutic benefits of a service animal… truly saving both ends of the leash.
