Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership and service programming. Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 3 million members and 1,285 chapters in 50 states, plus Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territories. In 1929 the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges.

Phi Theta Kappa offers a variety of campus, state, regional and national service, social and educational programs to its members. The letters phi, theta and kappa represent three Greek words that mean wisdom, aspiration and purity. Oak leaves and laurels are also incorporated into the Phi Theta Kappa logo. The oak leaves symbolize stability and strength of character, the laurel symbolizes achievement and success.

Throughout the world, academic institutions have created a wide variety of customs in an attempt to indicate the accomplishments of scholars through distinctive dress, color and ceremony. American academic regalia have developed from English traditions originating at Oxford and Cambridge, and they have been in continuous use in this country since colonial times. By the 20th century, institutions of higher learning in the United States had adopted a well-defined system of academic regalia which now includes the identification of the different academic degrees by distinctive gowns, hoods, and colors.

For example, the baccalaureate gown is worn closed and is identified by long, pleated front panels and long pointed sleeves. The master’s gown, worn open, has a very long sleeve, closed at the bottom. The arm of the wearer is placed through an opening in the front of the sleeve. Doctoral gowns also may be worn open, but they are distinguished by velvet panels around the neck and down the front of the gown. Three horizontal velvet bars of the color representing the appropriate degree also mark the sleeves of the doctoral gown.

In the United States, the hood is the most colorful feature of academic regalia. The bachelor’s hood is comparatively short, with the master’s a bit longer and the doctor’s reaching far down the wearer’s back. The outside of the hood is black, bordered with a band of velvet in the color representing the degree received. The hood is lined with the colors of the granting institution.

Caps or mortarboards eventually replaced the hood as headwear, which originally covered the head for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. The cap is the Oxford mortarboard shape, consisting of a head-hugging cap topped by a square flat surface of black cloth. A doctor may wear one made of velvet. A tassel, which hangs down on the left side, is attached and is of the color assigned to the academic field. Traditionally, the undergraduate moves the tassel from the right side to the left side of the cap after the baccalaureate degree is conferred.

Academic Regalia
