Sweptupintothemagicalrealmofswans(andbirds),thiselegiacphantasmagoriaofvariationsandensemblesinlineandmusicisthesignatureworkofLesBalletsTrockadero.ThestoryofOdette,thebeautifulprincessturnedintoaswanbytheevilsorcerer,andhowsheisnearlysavedbytheloveofPrinceSiegfried,wasnotsounusualathemewhenTchaikovskyfirstwrotehisballetin1877—themetamorphosisofmortalstobirdsandvisaversaoccursfrequentlyinRussianfolklore.TheoriginalSwanLakeattheBolshoiTheatreinMoscowwastreatedunsuccessfully;ayearafterTchaikovsky’sdeathin1893,theSt.PetersburgMaryinskyBalletproducedtheversionweknowtoday.Perhapstheworld’sbest-knownballet,itsappealseemstostemfromthemysteriousandpatheticqualitiesoftheheroinejuxtaposedwiththecanonizedglamourof19thcenturyRussianballet.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlowasfoundedin1974byagroupofballetenthusiastsforthepurposeofpresentingaplayful,entertainingviewoftraditional,classicalballetinparodyformanden travesti,LesBalletsTrockaderofirstperformedinthelate-lateshowsinOff-OffBroadwaylofts.TheTrocks,astheyareaffectionatelyknown,quicklygarneredamajorcriticalessaybyArleneCroceinThe New Yorker,andcombinedwithreviewsinThe New York TimesandThe Village Voice,establishedtheCompanyasanartisticandpopularsuccess.Bymid1975,theTrocks’inspiredblendoftheirlovingknowledgeofdance,theircomicapproach,andtheastoundingfactthatmencan,indeed,danceenpointewithoutfallingflatontheirfaces,wasbeingnotedbeyondNewYork.ArticlesandnoticesinpublicationssuchasVariety, Oui,TheLondonDailyTelegraph,aswellasaRichardAvedonphotoessayinVogue,madetheCompanynationallyandinternationallyknown.

The1975-76seasonwasayearofgrowthandfullprofessionalization.TheCompanyfoundmanagement,qualifiedfortheNationalEndowmentfortheArtsTouringProgram,andhiredafull-timeteacherandballetmistresstooverseedailyclassesandrehearsals.Alsointhisseason,theymadetheirfirstextendedtoursoftheUnitedStatesandCanada.Packing,unpacking,andrepackingtutusanddrops,stockinggiantsizedpointeshoesbythecase;runningforplanesandcharteredbusesallbecameroutinepartsoflife.

Sincethosebeginnings,theTrockshaveestablishedthemselvesasamajordancephenomenonthroughouttheworld.TheyhaveparticipatedindancefestivalsworldwideandtherehavebeentelevisionappearancesasvariedasaShirleyMacLainespecial,The Dick Cavett Show,What’s My Line?,Real People,On-Stage America,withKermitandMissPiggyontheirshowMuppet Babies,andaBBCOmnibusspecialontheworldofballethostedbyJenniferSaunders.AwardsthattheTrockshavegarneredovertheyearsincludeforbestclassicalrepertoirefromtheprestigiousCritic’sCircleNationalDanceAwards(2007)(UK),theTheatricalManagersAward(2006)(UK)andthe2007PositanoAward(Italy)forexcellenceindance.InDecember2008,theTrocksappearedatthe80thanniversaryRoyalVarietyPerformance,toaidoftheEntertainmentArtistes’BenevolentFund,inLondon,attendedbymembersoftheBritishroyalfamily.

TheoriginalconceptofLES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLOhasnotchanged.ItisaCompanyofprofessionalmaledancersperformingthefullrangeoftheballetandmoderndancerepertoire,includingclassicalandoriginalworksinfaithfulrenditionsofthemannersandconceitsofthosedancestyles.Thecomedyisachievedbyincorporatingandexaggeratingthefoibles,accidents,andunderlyingincongruitiesofseriousdance.Thefactthatmendancealltheparts--heavybodiesdelicatelybalancingontoesasswans,sylphs,watersprites,romanticprincesses,angst-riddenVictorianladies--enhancesratherthanmocksthespiritofdanceasanartform,delightingandamusingthemostknowledgeable,aswellasnovices,intheaudiences.Forthefuture,thereareplansfornewworksintherepertoire:newcities,statesandcountriestoperformin;andforthecontinuationoftheTROCKS’originalpurpose:tobringthepleasureofdancetothewidestpossibleaudience.Theywill,astheyhavedoneformorethanfortyyears,“KeeponTrockin’.”

VARVARA BRATCHIKOVA.People’sArtistandCat’sMeow,waseducatedattheRevanchistInstitute.ShebeganhercareerasPistachiainV.Stolichnaya’sproductionofThe NutcrackerandachievedstardomasOdette/Odile/Juliet/Giselle/AurorainthefamousNight of the 1000 Tsars.Herrepertoireencompassesnearlyalltheworkssheappearsin.

NADIA DOUMIAFEYVA.NoonewhohasseenHeliazpopkinwillsoonforgetthespiritualathleticismofNadiaDoumiafeyva,achildofCaucasuswhochangedhernameforshowbusinessreasons.Herfieryattackcombinedwithlyricsomnolenceproduceconfusioninaudiencestheworldover,especiallywhenappliedtoballet.

LARISKA DUMBCHENKO. BeforedefectingtotheWest,Lariska’ssupremeagilityarousedtheinterestoftheRussianspaceprogram,andin1962shebecamethefirstballerinatobeshotintoorbit.Hurtlingthroughthestratosphere,shedeliveredhandymake-uptipstoanassembledcrowdofcelebritiesbackonearth,includingthenowlegendary“WhitneyHouston,wehaveaproblem....”

NINA ENIMENIMYNIMOVA’S frailspiritualqualitieshavecausedthiselfincharmertobelikenedtoalemonsoufflépoiseddelicatelyonthebrinkoftotalcollapse.Heradorablyover-stretchedtendonsexudeachildlikesweetnessthatbeliesheractualage.

HELEN HIGHWATERShasdefectedtoAmericathreetimesandbeenpromptlyreturnedoneachoccasion—for“artisticreasons.”Recentlydiscovereden omeletteattheEasterEggHuntinWashington,DC,shewashiredbytheTrockadero,whereherinexplicablerisetostardomanswersthemusicalquestion:Whoputthebopinthebop-shibopshibop?

NINA IMMOBILASHVILI,formoreyearsthanshecarestoadmit,hasbeentheGreatTerroroftheinternationalballetworld.TheomniscientandubiquitousImmobilashviliisreputedtohaveextensivedossiersoneverymajordancefigure,livingand/ordead.Thisamazingcollectionhasassuredherentreeintotheloftiestchoreographiccircles;therolesshehasthusbeenabletocreatearetoonumeroustomention.Wearehonoredtopresentthisgranddameinherspectacularreturntotheballetstage.

IRINA KOLESTEROLIKOVAwasdiscovered,alongwithRasputin’sboot,adriftinabasketontheRiverNevabykindlypeasants.HerdebutattheMaryinskyTheatre,St.Petersburg,wasmarredbyheroverzealousgrandjeteintotheTsar’sbox,impalingaGrandDuchess.BanishedfromRussia,shemadeherwayarduouslytoNewYork,whereshefounded–andstilldirects–theEcoledeBalletdeHard-Nox.Hermostfamousexerciseisthewarm-up,consistingofamartiniandanelevator.

MARIA PARANOVA’sremarkablelifestory–onlynowcomingtolightafter19darkyearsinnearhopelessconvictionthatshewasMamieEisenhower–willneverfullybetold.Thediscoveryofhertrueidentity(ataRepublicanfundraiserinChicago)broughthertotheattentionoftheTrockadero,wheresheisslowlyrecoveringhertechnicalpowers.

EUGENIA REPELSKII ThesecretsofMmeRepelskii’sbeginningslieshroudedbehindtheKremlinwall;infact,nofewerthansixlieinthewall(injarsofassortedsizes).Dancinglightlyoverpogromsandothersordidreorganizationalmeasures,Eugeniahasemergedasaballerinanonpareilwhosepungencyisindisputable.

MOUSSIA SHEBARKAROVA. AcelebratedchildprodigybackintheBrezhnevera,MoussiaShebarkarovaastoundedherparentsattheageoftwobytakingacorrespondencecourseinballet.Sadly,duetotheunreliableRussianpostalsystem,shehasonlyjustgraduated.

ALLA SNIZOVAenjoyedgreatsuccessasababyballerinaatthemereageof9.Beingachildprodigy,shedevelopedseriousallergyproblemsandcouldonlyperformshortpieces.Knownasthe“littleorphan,”MissSnizovajoinedtheTrockaderoontour,appearingcloakedinanenigma(completewithzip-outlining).Aconsummateactress,shehasdancedthepartofLittleMissMarkovaandthetitleroleofGlinka’sPopoy-the Sailor Man. OLGA SUPPHOZOVA madeherfirstpublicappearanceinaKGBline-upunderdubiouscircumstances.Afteraseven-year-to-lifehiatus,shenowreturnstoheradoringfans.Whenquestionedaboutherforcedsabbatical,Olga’sonlycommentwas“IdiditforArt’ssake.”Art,however,saidnothing.

GUZELLA VERBITSKAYAwasbornonalocomotivespeedingthroughtheUralMountains.Shequicklyrealizedthelimitationsofhernativefolkdancingandquainthandicrafts.AfterherarrivalinAmerica,shelearnedeverythingshenowknowsaboutballetfromaseminarentitled“EvilFairiesonthePeripheryoftheClassicalDance.”

YAKATARINA VERBOSOVICH. Despitepossessingawalk-inwardrobesolargethatithasitsownpostcode,Yakatarinaremainsatrueballerinaofthepeople.Indeed,sheissolovedinhernativeRussiathatin1993thegratefulcitizensofMinskawardedherthekeytothecity.Thatmightwellhaveremainedthe“goldenmoment”ofthisgreatballerina’scareerhadtheynotsubsequentlychangedthelocks.

DORIS VIDANYA. ThelegendaryVitebskViragofirstachievedrecognitionasachildperformer,appearingwiththefamousSteppeBrothersintheworldpremiereofDyspepsiana(basedonanunfinishedparagraphbyM.Gorki).AsafavoriteofNicholas,Alexandra,Olga,Tatiana,Maria,Anastasiaandtheczarevich,LaEffhrvia(assheisknowntoheradmirers)wascompelledtofleeSt.PetersburgdisguisedasaKarskyshashlik.UponarrivalintheNewWorld,sheestablishedherselfasthePrimaBallerinaAssolutadeKalamazoo,atitleshestillretains.

TATIANA YOUBETYABOOTSKAYAcomestotheballetstageafterherhair-raisingescapefromthesuccessful(butnotterriblytasteful)overthrowofhercountry’sglamorousgovernment.Shemadeacounter-revolutionaryfigureofherselfwhenshewasarrestedforsingle-handedlystormingthePeople’sMuseum,whereherfabulouscollectionofjewelswasbeinginsensitivelydisplayedalongsideamachinegun.TheresilientMadameYoubetyabootskayaiscurrentlytheproprietressofAmerican’sonlymailorderCourseinClassicalBallet.

JACQUES d’ANIELS wasoriginallytrainedasanastronautbeforeenteringtheworldofballet.Strongbutflexible,goodnaturedbutdedicated,sensiblebutnotgiventounbelievableflightsoffantasticbehavior,Mr.d’Anielsisanexpertonrecoveringfromballetinjuries(includingthedread“Pavlova’sclavicle”).

ROLAND DEAULIN. Havinginventedtheconceptofthe“badhairyear”or“annushairibilis,”FrenchbornRolandnowdevoteshissparetimetosellinghisnewlineofMichaelFlatleyWigsontheQVCshoppingchannel.

PEPE DUFKA. TheballetworldwasrockedtoitsfoundationslastmonthwhenPepeDufkasued182ofNewYork’smostardentballetloversforlossofearnings.Mr.Dufkaclaimsthatnineteenyearsofconstantexposuretorottenfruitandvegetableshasledtopainfulandprolongedboutsofleafmould,cabbagerootfly,andbottom-endrot.Sadly,thishistoriccourtcasecomestoolateforaformercolleaguewhoselegswererecentlycrushedbyageneticallymodifiedavocado:hewillneverdanceagain.

KETEVAN IOSIFIDIwasdismissedfromtheKirovBalletin1991whenheblackmailedthehornsectionoftheorchestraandforcedthemtoplayPapa Don’t PreachinthethirdactofRomeo and Julietwhilehevoguedenpointe.ThoughKetevan’sappreciationofhighcultureissecondtonone,hestillthinksthat“primadonna”meansanysongrecordedbeforeLike a Virgin.

BORIS NOWITSKYhasbeenwiththegreatestballerinasofourtime;hehasevendancedwithsomeofthem.OneofthefirstdefectiveRussianmalestars,heleftthemotherlandforpurelycapitalisticreasons.Amazingly,betweenhisappearancesontelevisionandBroadway,aswellasinmovies,commercials,magazines,specialevents,andwomen’snylons,heoccasionallystillhastimetodance.

YURI SMIRNOV.Attheageofsixteen,YuriranawayfromhomeandjoinedtheKirovOperabecausehethoughtBorodinwasaprescriptionbarbiturate.LuckilyfortheTrockadero,hesoondiscoveredthathedidn’tknowhisariasfromhiselbowanddecidedtobecomeaballetstarinstead.

In1996,RayColganapproachedJasonNeulanderabouttheideaofcreatingascience-fictionradio

serialtobeperformedliveininstallmentsandmaybeeventtobeairedontheradio.Neulanderjumpedontheidea.HeinvitedJessicaReisman,JuliaEdwards,andLisaD’AmourtojoinRayonthewritingteamandThe Intergalactic Nemesiswasborn.Theoriginalconceitwasthatthewriterswouldprovidetwo15-minutescriptsperweekforfiveweeks.NeulandergotthesescriptsonaFriday,rehearsedwithactorsandsoundonSaturday,andperformedthetwoepisodesonSundayforfiveweeksatLittleCitycoffeehouse.Becausetheprocesswassoquick,thewritersnamedthemaincharactersaftertheactorswhoplayedthem:BenWillcott,MollyRice,andJaphyFernandez.BuzzMorangrabbedstuffoutofhiskitchentomakethelast-minutesoundeffects.Thefirstweek,morethan100peopleshowedupatLittleCitytocatchtheshowandweekafterweekthecrowdsstuckitout.Morancapturedtheshowonacassette-tapefourtrackandthenextsummerKUTairedtheshowinserialformatontheirSundaymorningshowSoundsight.Andthatwasthat.Orsotheythought…In2000,BuzzboughtaportabledigitalrecordingstudioandsuggestedtoJasonthatSVTremounttheshow,cutitdowntoanevening-lengthformat,performitagainandrecordatruebroadcast-qualityrecording.Again,NeulanderjumpedandaskedRayandJessicatohelphimrewriteit.OnMemorialDay2000,thecrewsetupshopattheStateTheatretoacapacitycrowd.TheonlyoriginalcastmemberwasBenWillcott,sothenamesoftheothertwomaincharacterswerechanged.TheperformancewasreceivedsowellthatRayandJasonimmediatelyknewthatthenextsummertheywouldhavetocreateasequel,whichtheydid.

Return of the Intergalactic NemesiswasperformedandrecordedinJune2001,bothshowswereperformedinrepin2002,andKUTairedathree-parteditoftheshowonits“BestofPublicRadio”series.Andthatwasthat.Orsotheythought…InJanuary2009,NeulanderapproachedartistTimDoyle,whohadcreatedthebackdropsforvariousproductions,aboutdevelopingacomic-bookversionofthestory.Asthetwocollaboratorsbeganworkonthecomic-book,CliffReddaskedNeulandertobringtheshowintoDellHallattheLongCenter.Inthatmeeting,Neulandercameupwiththeideaofcombiningthecomic-bookartworkwiththeliveshow.InSeptember2010,theLongCenterpremieredthisnewformofentertainmenttoanaudienceofover2,100people.Currently,theprojecthasspawnedtwosequelsandisinthemidstofamulti-yearinternationaltour,includingtheKennedyCenterinWashingtonDC,theNewVictoryinNewYorkCity,andmorethan100venuesaroundtheglobe.

Therewillbea20-minuteintermission.Comicbooks,sound-effectsgadgets,posters,shirts,andZygonianSlimeavailableinthelobbyatintermissionandaftertheperformance.Thecastwillbesigningbooksaftertheshow.ThisproductionreceiveditsworldpremiereattheLongCenterforthePerformingArtsinAustin,Texas,2010.NewYorkpremiereattheNewVictoryTheatre,2012.
