Ihopethatthisnewsletter/indsyouwell.IampleasedtoprovideyouwithourmostcurrentOklahomaChapterACPNewsletter.Ibelieveyouwill/indreadingthisinformativeandenjoyable.SinceIlastwrote,yourchapterleadershavebeenbusyworkingbothlocallyandnationallyonyourbehalfandonbehalfofourfutureinternists.
InFebruary,ourChapterCouncilmetbyconferencecalltodiscussChapterissues.The/inancialreportwasprovidedbyMichaelWeisz,MD,MACP;overall,the/inancesoftheChapterareingoodshape.WeheardseveralcommitteereportsincludingeffortsoftheEarlyCareerPhysicianCommitteeledbyDr.AndriaMedinaandtheLegislativeCommitteeledbyDr.MatlockJeffries.WealsodiscussedupdatesfromtheOklahomaCityandTulsacampuses.Dr.RhettJacksonisthisyear’sprogramchairforourannualstatemeeting,whichwilltakeplaceinOklahomaCityonOctober20ththrough21st.Thisyear’smeetingpromisestobeeducationallysound.Ihopeyouwilljoinyourcolleaguesandattend.Furthermore,Dr.JackEnde,President-ElectoftheACP,willbeoneofourfeaturedspeakers.Wealsodiscussedourmembership,andIampleasedtoinformyouthatourmembershipnumberscontinuetogrow.Wehavegrown4.9%largelyduetoresidentmembership,butwehavehadamodestincreaseinfullmembersaswell.

papers,includingonesonprescriptiondrugpricing,GMEpaymentreform,gunviolence,andphysician-assistedsuicide.Wehavebeenkeptup-to-dateandinformedabouttheactivityofthenationalof/iceonissuesaboutMOCandrecerti/ication.Asyoumayhaveheard,SteveWeinbergerwillfullyretirefromhispositioneffective2017andDarilynMoyerhasbeenselectedasthenewEVP/CEOeffectiveSeptember2016.DarilynisanoutstandinginternistandwillrepresenttheCollegeanditsmembersveryeffectively.Sofar,Darilynhasbeenoutstandingandwillcontinuetoservetheorganizationwell.

Medicine Day 2017OnFebruary21,2017,yourACPOklahomaChaptercollaboratedwiththeOklahomaStateMedicalAssociationinhostingtheannualMedicineDaylegislativereception!ManyofOklahoma’slegislativeleaderswerepresent.Dr.MatlockJeffriesspokeduringthereceptionaboutthevariouslegislativeissuesthatwillbediscussedinACP’supcoming“LeadershipDay.”Nearly150physiciansandmedicalstudentswereinattendance.Theyspokewithyourlegislatorsabouttheimportantissuesimpacting
healthcareinOklahoma—includingHB1013,ameasuretoallownursepractitionerstohaveindependentpracticewithoutanysortofphysiciansupervision;Medicaidreimbursement;maintenanceofcerti/ication;vaccinations;andtanningbyminors.

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder
PrescriptiondrugoverdoseskillnearlytwoOklahomansperday.InmanyruralOklahomacounties,opioidsaccountformorethanhalfofdrugoverdosedeaths.Accesstotreatmentforopioidusedisorder(OUD)isparticularlysparseinruralareasofOklahomawheretherearefewprimarycareproviderstrainedtoidentifyandtreatpeoplewhohaveOUD.ManyprovidersfeeloverwhelmedattheprospectofofferingtreatmentforOUDintheirownpractice.
TheMedication-AssistedTreatment(MAT)ExpansionProjectaimstoexpandaccesstoMATforpersonswithopioidusedisorder(OUD)bytrainingruralprimarycareprovidersandofferingresourcestosupportPCPsastheylearnhowtodeliverMATservicesintheof/ice-basedsetting.MATisanevidence-basedstrategyfortreatingpersonswithOUDthatcombinestheuseofmedicationswithcounselingandbehaviortherapiestoprovideawhole-patientapproachtotreatment.Itofferspractical,hands-onassistancetoyouandyourof/iceteamthroughtraining,case-basedconsultationswithaddictionspecialists,andmentoringbyexperiencedMATproviders.Practiceswillreceiveastipendtofacilitatedatacollectionforaplannedevaluationoftheproject.
Whoiseligible?• Internists,familymedicinephysicians,doctorsofosteopathicmedicine,physicianassistants,andnurse
practitionerswhoprovideprimarycareservices.• PCPsmustpracticeinthefollowingruralOklahomacounties:Adair,Cherokee,Craig,Delaware,Mayes,
Muskogee,Nowata,Ottawa,orWashington.• PCPsshouldeithercurrentlyholdordesiretoobtainaDrugAddictionTreatmentActof2000(DATA2000)or
ComprehensiveAddictionandRecoveryActof2016(CARA2016)authorizedwaivertodispenseorprescribeScheduleIII,IV,andVnarcoticmedicationsapprovedbytheFDA(e.g.,buprenorphine)inanof/ice-basedsettingforthetreatmentofOUD.
Whatisthebene/ittoPCPs?• PCPswillreceiveextensiveeducationtoenablethemtoobtainaDATA2000orCARA2016authorizedwaiverforprescribingbuprenorphineinof/ice-basedsettings,andeffectivelysupportingpatientsaffectedby,oratriskof,OUD.
• PCPsandtheirstaffwillreceivepractical,case-basedteachingandmentorshipontreatingpatientswithOUD,andguidanceonincorporatingMATintothepractice.TheprojectoffersbothaccesstolocalMATexpertsandremoteECHO-modelvideoconsultationswithpeersandaddictionspecialists(webcamsandsoftwareareprovided).
• PCPscanearncontinuingmedicaleducation(CME)creditsforattendingtraining,withanoptiontoful/illtherequirementsofthenewAmericanSocietyofAddictionMedicine(ASAM)FundamentalsofAddictionMedicine40-HourProgram.
• YourparticipationintheMATExpansionProjectwillhelpexpandaccesstoneededtreatmentforruralOklahomansexperiencingOUD,andwillhelpdevelopbestpracticesforruralprimarycareprovidersnationwidewhowanttoimplementMAT.
