    CourseDescriptionWhenisviolencepolitical?Whatistheroleofviolenceinmaintainingexclusionarypoliticalregimesandinexpandingpoliticalrepresentationandinclusion?ThislecturecoursefocusesonturningpointsinLatinAmericanhistoryfromthenineteenthcenturytothepresentthatspeaktothesequestions.Thecoursehastwogoals:One,toexplorewhyandhowviolentconflictsacrossLatinAmericahaveshapedtheformalandidealdefinitionsofcitizenshipanddemocracyupheldbystatesandsocialmovementsintheregion,alsotransformingpoliticalidentitiesandleadership.Two,tounderstandhowthecollectivepoliticalactionofarangeofsocialactorsinLatinAmericahasinfluencedandinteractedwithglobalideologicalcontextsandutopias.ThecoursewillsituateLatinAmericanhistoryinclassicandcontemporaryconceptualdebatesaboutviolence,democracy,andcitizenship.Wewilltaketheoreticalquestionstothehistoricalarenabystudyingtextsofliterature,theworkofsocialscientistsandhistorians,andprimarysourcesthatillustratetheevolvingrelationshipbetweenpoliticalviolence,citizenship,anddemocracyacrossLatinAmerica.Allreadingsmustbecompletedbeforethemeetingforwhichtheyareassigned.Studentswillwriteweeklycriticalresponsepapersanalyzingthereadingsandparticipateactivelyinthesectiondiscussionsofthesetextsandthethemesofthecourse.Thecoursedoesnothaveamidtermorfinalexam.Instead,studentswillwritefour4-pagepapersconsistingofbookreviews.Grades20%AttendanceandParticipation(including10responsepapersonweeklyreadings) 20%Paper1,dueFridayFeb.1020%Paper2,dueWed.March820%Paper3,dueFridayApril1420%Paper4,dueonDateoffinalexam
