In 2015 we celebrated 35 years of service to pediatric families with an anniversary party at our St. Pete West House, complete with a proclamation from Mayor Rick Kriseman. It is astonishing to think that in 1980 we were the first house in Florida and there were only a handful

of Ronald McDonald Houses in the U.S. This charity is like the little engine that could, gathering speed and increasing our presence around the globe. Now there are 357 Ronald McDonald Houses in 37 countries, and 203 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in 23 countries. Even more incredible is that our own Tampa Bay chapter has cared for 52,000 families and touched the lives of thousands more.

We have made huge advancements in our services, care and safety of families, thanks to the generous support of our community. Three of our four houses have already undergone remodeling, with our St. Pete East House almost complete, just in time to celebrate a milestone birthday - 20 years! If you haven’t visited in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised. We have also implemented 24-hour awake staff at the St. Petersburg East and Central Houses to facilitate late-night check-ins and check-outs for families.

2015 was a fulfilling year, and our community made it clear how much they admire and support our mission and our care of pediatric families. ImageFirst’s donation of laundry service has made an enormous impact on the lives of our families, who no longer have to delay their departure because of laundry, and has made our operations more seamless. The outpouring of love and generosity this past holiday season was beyond our expectations. Thank you for helping us make a huge difference in the lives of families like the Blevins, the family featured on our cover who endured a traumatic year but still give thanks that they have a home at Ronald McDonald House.

Fondly,

In 2015 we honored 23 high school students from our eleven-county area at a special awards luncheon. These outstanding students received scholarships for a pre-paid two-year Florida college tuition or equivalent tuition to use at an approved accredited institution. The students, along with their families, school counselors, and administrators enjoyed a delicious lunch compliments of the McDonald’s Tampa Bay Co-Op and were recognized for their hard work and perseverance. McDonald’s owner/operators and RMHC Board members attended to honor the recipients and hear about their academic and community achievements.

Ronald McDonald House offers families a place to call home while their child is receiving critical medical treatment in area hospitals. For 35 years, our Ronald McDonald Houses have provided a “home-away-from-home” for 52,000 pediatric families in need of comfort and care during a most difficult time in their lives. Annually, 2,000 families come through our doors looking for a quiet place to rest and find solace, including 700 day use families who visit our Central House inside All Children’s Hospital to take a break from the stress of their day. Three Houses in St. Petersburg care for families with children receiving treatment at All Children’s Hospital and nearby clinics (St. Pete East, St. Pete West, and St. Pete Central). The Tampa House, located adjacent to Tampa General Hospital, cares for families with children at Tampa General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital of Tampa, and Shriners Hospital. At Ronald McDonald House, families receive much more than accommodation; they find a safe, convenient, and home-like environment. Volunteers at each of our Houses strive to engage families and help them through difficult times by offering pet therapy, arts and crafts, bingo, game nights and so much more. Community organizations like Boyd Hill Nature Preserve bring wildlife to our Houses to entertain the families, Amos the Wonder Horse and Lucky Star the Circus Horse make visits, and our dog therapy volunteers visit the St. Pete East House daily to provide the kind of love and comfort that only a dog can give. The stories we hear from families repeatedly state that they do not know what they would have done if Ronald McDonald House had not been available to them. No other charity in our local community provides this service to pediatric families.gloBal impacT

More than 40% of families served at Ronald McDonald Houses have children in the neonatal intensive care unit. At least one RMHC core program provides care for families being served at 89% of top children’s hospitals worldwide. 94% of hospital administrators agree that Ronald McDonald Houses reduce parental stress and 93% agree they reduce costs for families.

Families saved an estimated $700 million in out-of-pocket lodging and meal expenses due to the presence of Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room programs. The benefits and impact of Ronald McDonald House on pediatric families are numerous:

• Positive overall hospital experience• Better perceived quality of life• Proximity to hospitals• Strengthens coping abilities• Higher quality sleep• Provides spaces to play

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year

about 775 babies in the United States are born with an omphalocele.

Many babies born with an omphalocele also have other birth defects, such

as heart defects, neural tube defects, and chromosomal abnormalities.

Counting Their BlessingsBy Alison Barrick

The Blevins Family has had to bear the weight of the world this past year. Their 18-year-old son Austin desperately needed medical help that could not be found near their home in Worthington, Ohio. Tom Blevins humbly explains that he and his family lost their home, their jobs and their car while struggling to find care for their son. Tom’s wife Jennifer spent hundreds of hours researching treatment options and care providers for Austin after the doctors admitted they had tried everything they could. This tireless research would bring them to All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine (ACH) where they put all their hope into one doctor.

Austin Blevins was born with Omphalocele, a birth defect of the abdominal wall leaving his intestines, liver, and other organs protruding through a hole in his belly button. The organs were covered in a thin, nearly transparent sac. Austin spent his first three months of life in the Intensive Care Unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, undergoing numerous surgeries to correct his condition.

Following these early surgeries, Austin would be healthy for a long time, and then scar tissue would cause a bowel obstruction requiring more surgery. Austin has endured multiple surgeries in his young life as well as extensive aftereffects without complaint. He keeps a smile on his face despite the two ostomy bags and a feeding tube that are required for sustenance.

Last year Austin needed yet another surgery to correct his bowel obstruction, but this time the outcome

was different. During the surgery his bowel was nicked three times and he almost died on the operating table. His hospital stay lasted nine months. He was released for just one week before being readmitted for another two and a half months. Fortunately, the family lived within an hour of the hospital and was able to care for their son while continuing to work.

Despite Austin’s medical condition, Tom and Jennifer were trying to make the best of things; he as a fence installer, she as a heavy equipment supervisor for road construction. Neither of them foresaw that Austin’s illness would cause their world to fall apart, but the bills and time off work during the latest surgery became too much to manage. To make matters worse, after Austin’s last hospital stay, he came home with a large gaping hole where his belly button should be. The doctors explained that they could not stretch the muscles back together to close the wound. They declared there was nothing else they could do for Austin. Tom and Jennifer refused to accept this outcome and began researching doctors all across the country that might be able to help their son.

Jennifer was hopeful when she came across Dr. Paul Colombani at ACH. She was optimistic when she learned that he had expertise operating on patients with Austin’s issues, as well as a prestigious resume that included attending to President Ronald Reagan after his assassination attempt. Her mother had relocated to Bradenton, Florida, so it seemed like she had finally found an answer to their prayers. Jennifer drove down to Florida in June 2015 with Austin and his 16-year old brother Dalton.  Tom

Page 5: Spring 2016 Newsletter & 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

arrived in September after staying behind to get their affairs in order.

In Dr. Colombani, the Blevins family found a champion for their son. He has already made a big difference in Austin’s health by repairing his bowels, removing scar tissue, and closing two fistulas.

Austin is still having ups and downs and there are more obstacles to overcome. Even as one problem is fixed, another infection or fistula appears. Although his stomach is still wide open, Dr. Colombani has made it clear that he will not give up on Austin. He and the team at ACH are committed to doing what it takes to give Austin a healthy future. In Ronald McDonald House, Tom and Jennifer have found a place to keep their family close. Since arriving in Florida, the Blevins have called the St. Pete East House their home. The House has provided them with the ability to solely focus on Austin and his progress. They are full of praise for the support, help and hospitality offered to them by the staff and volunteers. Jennifer and Tom have made lifelong friendships and have found that sharing their daily ups and downs with other families has made a big difference in their quality of life. This is a challenging scenario for any father but Tom takes it in stride, commenting, “We’re together as a family thanks to Ronald McDonald House. We couldn’t ask for a better life.”

Despite the struggles this family has faced, they celebrate the joyous moments and have high hopes for the future. Upon Tom’s arrival in Florida, the whole family visited Coquina Key Beach. Tom couldn’t hold back tears when he held hands with his wife

and two sons as they walked into the sparkling Florida water for the first time. With the hope they have found since coming to Florida, the Blevins are starting to plan their future. They want to find a home in Palm Harbor where they have found a good school for Dalton. A talented baseball player, who was being scouted by several teams in Ohio, Dalton has sacrificed a lot for his big brother.  Although he has had to put his dreams on hold while his parents sought help for Austin, he acknowledges with a smile that he is young and there is still

plenty of time for him to follow his dreams.

The future is bright for Austin, an inspiring young man, full of light and smiles. His parents say that he only worries about others and never himself. Due to his health issues Austin is schooled online and finds escape in his iPad while he patiently waits for the day when he can eat and drink again. Dr. Colombani continues to work to close the hole in his stomach that will allow Austin to lead a more normal life. Through all their struggles this past year Jennifer acknowledges how grateful they are. “We went from ‘no one can help us’ to finding the right doctor.” Hope is now a reality.  The Blevins are a fine example of a truly united family, standing strong as one in their pursuit of a healthy life for Austin. They are grateful for each blessing that comes their way and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay is honored to be a part of their story.

More than Just a Name on a Wall…Since launching the “Adopt a Room” program in 2014, 39 bedrooms have been adopted in our four Ronald McDonald Houses. This commitment by generous partners has helped care for families staying in these bedrooms for 28,470 nights over the last two years! Other community partners have adopted 10 common rooms in the Houses helping to create spaces where 2,000 families each year share meals, discuss their day and bond with others facing similar challenges.

The companies, families and individuals who are a part of our “Adopt a Room” program help to sustain each House in a significant way by sponsoring all of the families who use the adopted room throughout their stay. But their support provides much more than just a room; it greatly aids in our mission of keeping families close, so they can focus on what is most important – their hospitalized child.

The commitment of our “Adopt a Room” donors is so appreciated but there are still more spaces and families to care for! If you are interested in learning more about our “Adopt-A-Room” program please contact Chelsea White, Development Manager at [email protected].

LeAVInG A LeGACY… no SUPER POWERS reQuIred

As a supporter of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay (RMHC-TB) and a believer in the mission of creating a home-away-from-home, you take time out of your life to give to families with a hospitalized child. In leaving a legacy, you ensure that your desire to support families in need continues long after you’re gone.

We understand that your commitment to take care of our families does not negate the desire to take care of your own. “Keeping Families Close” is what we do and that is important for your family as well. There are simple ways to provide support to RMHC-TB while still ensuring that you take care of those close to your heart.

1. InCLude a gift to RMHC-TB as a percentage of your residual estate, ensuring your donation is proportionate to your estate size no matter how it changes over the years.

2. nAMe RMHC-TB as a contingency benefactor so a donation is made only if named beneficiaries are no longer living.

3. LeAVe highly taxed assets to RMHC-TB since we are a tax exempt organization, alleviating the the tax impact on your estate.

4. LeAVe your gift in honor of a family member as a way of acknowledging your continued love for them.

Your tax or financial planning professional can help you decide on the best fit for your estate and your plan can always change as your life moves forward. What matters most is that your legacy is a reflection of the actions you have taken throughout your lifetime. The families we serve are so grateful for your support today and RMHCTB would be honored to help your legacy live on into tomorrow. For more information please call CEO Janice Davis at (813) 258-6430, ext. 1 or email her at [email protected].

Lighting the Light

Each year, RMHC of Tampa Bay honors an individual or company that has made a significant impact on our organization. This past year’s recipient has made an enormous difference in the daily operations of our houses.

Doing laundry at any home is not an easy task with a growing family. At Ronald McDonald House it is especially daunting with 80 bedrooms, four Houses and nearly 2,000 families annually. Thankfully, ImageFirst Healthcare Laundry Specialists stepped in to help us with this massive task. Throughout the month, they pick up our linens to thoroughly clean, fold and return them. No more families rushing to wash their sheets and towels before they return to the hospital or home; no more volunteers lifting heavy baskets up the stairs or elevators; no more wear and tear on expensive sheets because ImageFirst makes sure that this heavy burden is handled by their dedicated staff.

In just over two years ImageFirst has donated more than $66,000 in inkind services. According to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay’s CEO Janice Davis, “ImageFirst is a dream come true for us! Making the lives of our pediatric families less stressful is our primary goal, and this donation truly makes a difference.”

Giving a Heart for The House That Love Built©

Tampa Bay is a generous community! Our four Houses were the fortunate recipients of many gifts and service projects during the holiday season as our amazing community showed their support for our families. Individuals and groups outdid themselves this year, bringing car loads of items to help our families enjoy the season. Tampa Bay Lightning Captain Steven Stamkos generously continued his commitment to our families by serving as our spokesperson and giving us a lead gift. Thanks to the hard work of our friends at FKQ Advertising, this extensive appeal included television and radio ads, billboards, website banners, mall kiosks, McDonald’s trayliners, and a mailer to RMH friends. On a warm December evening, the Tampa House hosted over 100 guests at our annual holiday open house where friends,

volunteers, RMH families and staff gathered to celebrate the season. Guests were treated to a delicious feast graciously provided by the chefs from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and served by vP Brian Ford’s sons, an annual tradition for many years. Carlo Lovasco was on hand to provide the perfect musical ambiance. As always, the evening’s highlight was Santa’s arrival, where the children eagerly waited in line to sit on Santa’s lap and whisper their Christmas wishes.

RMHC CEO Janice Davis presented the 2015 Friends Award to ImageFirst Healthcare Laundry Specialists for making a huge impact on our operations by donating laundry services to all four houses. Thank you to all our donors, friends, and volunteers for Giving a Heart for The House That Love Built. Your donations provide for more than 2,000 family nights!

The Fred scarcelli, Jr.RMH Charity Golf Classic Never a dull event for our attendees, golfers from around the country who gather at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in mid-November to enjoy two days of golf in support of our Ronald McDonald House families. Many took advantage of the Beat the Pro contest with Tom DeCaprio to see if they could outdo his shot on a par 3. While some were successful, the real winners were our families from the $1,560 in donations. Attendees gathered in the evening for a delicious dinner, live auction of a Buccaneers suite, player awards, and casino games. Thanks to our generous sponsor Majestic for donating all the embroidered golf shirts for this event! The evening’s highlight featured a presentation from Connor Lewis, published golf historian on pre-1930 golf. Everyone LOVED Connor’s zebra golf cleats and matching bag - it turns out he’s a pretty good player too! This golf classic is one of our signature events, netting close to $100,000 for the operation of our four Ronald McDonald Houses. Please visit our website to view the complete photo gallery. This year’s tournament is scheduled for November 18-19. Watch your mailbox in August for the brochure!

The 2015 Guy Harvey Fishing for Hearts Tournament was another great success. Guy Harvey was on hand to present awards to the winners in each category (trout, redfish, snook, Grand Slam & most fish caught), and mingled with the guests while they enjoyed some tasty dishes at the RumFish Grill after a long day of fishing. Sponsored anglers received an overnight stay at the Guy Harvey Outpost. All anglers received a fabulous goody bag & custom shirt donated by Majestic, and their choice of Bimini Bay’s SaltLife sunglasses featuring the latest in water repellent technology. The event got off to a great start on Thursday evening with an angler social at RumFish Grill. On Friday, anglers were shuttled to Loggerhead Marina where their boats departed for a day of fishing with some of the best fishing captains in the state. Thanks to our generous donors and participants we raised $84,000 to benefit the families served by RMH & Athletes for Hearts. We expect this year to be even bigger and better! Stay tuned for event details on this year’s tournament, scheduled for September 29-30.

Our Community Makes a DifferenceEach year, Alan Brown and Brian Sloan from southwest Airlines put on the Hook, Line & Sinker Fishing Tournament to benefit RMH. Together they manage all the logistics involved in running a deep water tournament on the East Coast each year for SWA employees from across the country. This is a huge feat for just two people who also work regular jobs at our Tampa airport. Last year their tournament raised $21,250 as net proceeds of the event, a remarkable achievement. What’s even more amazing is that these proceeds pay for 265 family nights! We are most grateful to have these wonderful friends, who consistently support us year after year.

suncoast Credit union has been a very generous partner to us since 1998, supporting our events, encouraging their employees to volunteer, and raising funds for us through various fundraisers. Last year, they pledged $100,000 to renovate the St. Pete East House kitchen. As you can see from the photos in this issue, those funds have been put to good use creating a more inviting and polished kitchen for our families and meal groups to enjoy. Thank you, Suncoast Credit Union!

suncoast region Porsche Club holds an annual event called 48 Hours at Sebring (in addition to other events) to raise significant funds for the operation of our houses. In 2014 they raised $18,500 and in 2015 raised $19,310. We are most grateful for these wonderful friends.

Alpha delta Pi epsilon Lambda Chapter at usF has raised funds through their annual Cheer, Toss & Tumble event. Last year these young women raised almost $9,000!

In 2015 we welcomed a new generous donor, Insight, who pledged $20,000 for the renovation of the St. Pete East Dining Room.
