Topics covered will include basic information on ALICE (alert lockdown inform counter evacuate). An overall of how Campus Police responds to emergencies and what tools are available to Campus Police. Participants will gain a basic understanding of how to prepare for and what to do in an Active Shooter incident.

2. Online Course Design/Redesign: OEI Rubric for Exemplary Course Development, VOC-113

Are you developing a new online course in Blackboard? Does your current online class need a

little TLC? Are you interested in creating or modifying your course to fit in with the Online

Education Initiative Rubric? The focus will be on learner engagement, interaction and

collaboration, and assessment. This will be a hands-on workshop and your own course will be

used. While every discipline has unique pedagogical challenges, we will examine common

methods applied to online course development and explore specific applications as well. This

workshop is designed for beginners and advanced. So whether you’re just starting or you want

to freshen up an existing Blackboard course, I hope you’ll join us.

In spring 2015, Merced College participated in the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), a national survey out of the Center for Community College Student Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin. Courses were randomly selected to participate in this in-class survey. The data collected will be used to improve the Merced College student experience in terms of satisfaction and engagement. Come to this interactive workshop to learn more about what our students indicated as it relates to the current initiatives involving SSSP, student equity and others.

Are you teaching online, but find that your students are not finding academically appropriate materials for research assignments? Come find out how you can work with the librarians to create assignments for research, present library instruction videos tailored to your course content, design webpages specific to your discipline or just make the students aware of how much material is available to them as Merced College students online. ACCJC requires that we provide equal access to library services to students taking DE courses, and your librarians are working to make this possible. Join us in making our students successful.

This workshop will cover more advanced features of Microsoft Outlook, such as the calendar features and task lists. This will be an instructor-led use of the Microsoft IT Academy system available to all faculty and staff of the College. The learning outcomes for this session are: a. User will be able to use the Calendar tool to set and manage meetings, appointments, &

events.b. User will be able to use the Task List tool to create and manage task lists.c. User will create and modify folder structures for storing and sorting e-mails.d. User will be able to set and modify out-of-office and auto-response messages.

In this workshop we will discuss techniques that can be applied in any discipline that will engage students both in and outside of the classroom. We will discuss not only the benefits and drawbacks to flipping courses (aka inverted teaching), but how-to implement this technique in whole – or – in parts in any course. 10. Intermediate Excel (Instructor-led and Hands-on Session), room VOC-115Linje Johnson & Ahmad Ahmadi1:00-2:50pm

This session will introduce functions of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet slightly beyond the most basic fundamentals. Some basic knowledge of Excel and its uses is assumed, but only minimal expertise is needed to obtain benefit from this session. This will be an instructor-led use of the Microsoft IT Academy system available to all faculty and staff of the College. After this training, users will be able to:

a. Order ranges of cells or tables on various criteria.b. Manipulate multiple sheets within one file and make references across sheetsc. Insert and manipulate dynamic charts and graphs based on table data.d. Use various formula functions and construct complex formulas.

In this hands-on portion of the session, participants will learn how to use functions such as IF, SUMIF, PMT, COUNT, COUNTIF, COUNTIFS and VLOOKUP. We will also cover math functions such as SQUARE, MOD, and QUOTIENT. Graph and conditional formatting will also be discussed.

11. Leading a Focus Group: Tips and Tricks, room VOC-140Anne Dicarlo1:00-1:50pm

Need to complete a program review but experiencing survey fatigue? Or maybe just curious about what students or staff think about a particular topic? Join Anne DiCarlo for an interactive session with tips and tricks on how to plan, host, and analyze a focus group to get valuable insights from participants. A menu of online resources will be provided.

Colleges across America have GE classes to ensure that students are exposed to ideas outside their area of concentration. Some educators have argued that this should be termed Essential Education because it prepares students to integrate and apply the ideas they have learned. Merced College has 5 GE Outcomes which are associated with Communication, Computation and Technology, Cognitive Skills, Cultural Understanding and Personal responsibility.

For 2015-16, the Academic Senate voted to focus on the Global and Community Consciousness and Responsibility, which states that students will “Demonstrate understanding of different cultures and knowledge of historical eras and importance of community involvement” and be able to 1. Distinguish and understand diverse cultures, 2. Evaluate historical knowledge and relate it to current issues, and 3. Recognize the impact of local, national, and global involvement.

If you have a class with an assignment or activity which you feel covers any of these outcomes, we would like to include you in the Global GELO assessment. Drop in and see how you can help the college determine if our students are learning about the world and its cultures.

13. LaTex: Making Beautiful Documents (Without Using Microsoft Word), room VOC-113Dr. Brandon Tenn2:00-2:50pm

Have you ever wondered how publishers make math and science textbooks and journal articles typeset so nicely? The answer is that most of them do not use Microsoft Word - they use LaTeX /ˈleɪtɛk/.

In this workshop you will learn how to typeset various kinds of documents using LaTeX. I will show examples of how LaTeX can be used to make presentations, letters, syllabi, exams, dissertations, etc.

By the end of the workshop you will be able to format text, typeset equations, write a short quiz with both multiple choice and short answer questions, and draw some figures in metapost. The LaTeX typesetting system is $FREE$, platform independent, and even has online compilers.

15. DataMart 101 & Other Data Resources, room VOC-113

Do you what Merced College’s fall 2014 headcount is? How many foster youth did we serve? What

was the financial aid given in 2013-14? This and many other questions can be answered with

DataMart! The College submits so much data, from district demographics to award counts to

assessment information, to the Chancellor’s Office and it’s all available in DataMart. Come to this

high-level overview of DataMart to learn more about this great tool and see how your questions

can be answered with already-available data at your fingertips. This FLEX workshop will also go

through other data resources available to Merced College, including both internal and external.

Do you remember how excited you were to become an employee at Merced College? Do you ever need a reminder of why Merced College is a great place to work? Do you ever lose sight of our purpose….why we exist? Have you ever thought about what our mission, vision and core values look like in action? Sometimes we get so caught up in all the things that we have to do, that we lose focus of the huge impact that we are making in the lives of our students and in our community. You will have the opportunity to participate in this workshop with new employees, as this workshop was put together as an on-boarding program and is meant to introduce new employees to the rich history, traditions, and culture of Merced College.

The workshop highlights all of the amazing things that we do at Merced College. It is interactive, motivational, and fun, and will leave you inspired and proud to be part of Merced College!

I have all this data, now what do I do with it? Pivot tables are a great way to summarize and sliceand dice large amounts of data. This workshop will show you how to use pivot tables as well ashow to create a basic pivot table.

Join us to learn some tips and ideas on how to budget wisely. We will cover some key elements to successful money management and personal financial planning. Topics will include power of saving, budgeting, debt, long-term planning, etc.

22. Introduction to Camtasia, room VOC-113Manuel Costa11:00-12:50pm

This session will introduce attendees to the basic elements of using the Camtasia software package. This tool is used to capture events on a computer screen in the form of a video, complete with narration and the ability to zoom and pan for added clarity. This capability can be used to clearly show the steps of a process in any kind of computer environment, from how to build a macro in Excel to showing the steps for creating a post on Twitter. The complete workflow of building an instructional video will be demonstrated from start to finish, and if time permits the built-in basic video editor will be covered in detail. The finished videos can be shared on YouTube and other social media sites, e-mailed to specific individuals, burned to DVD, or distributed in a variety of other ways. No prior knowledge of this type of software is assumed or required.

Come learn the basics of healthy eating. You will have more energy, feel better and be more productive as a result. This workshop will cover things such as: "superfoods"- foods with incredible health boosting properties, and "lethal foods"- foods to avoid or greatly limit consumption of, healthy vs. unhealthy beverages and more.
