L ate 2015 and early 2016 has seen a lot happen for our company, and we’re eager to get you all caught up in the latest issue of JusticeFacts! As many of you will know, we’ve just completed our annual customer satisfaction survey and I’d like to thank you for your participation. We’re sharing the result with you in the article included below. The results are gratifying in that we’ve made good progress in the areas you told us need- ed work, but I want to assure you that we understand that we still have work to do. We are continuing to focus on quality by investing in new personnel, new tools and we’ve successfully requal- ified as an ISO 9001:2008 registered company. We’ve already started preparing our quality system for the move to ISO 9001:2015 and we expect that work to continue for the foreseeable future. The same period has been a busy and productive time across our company. If you take a look at the new customer section of the newsletter, you’ll see that our business development department has some important announcements about new cus- tomers and our product management and prod- uct development departments have made a lot of progress in releasing new versions for LIMS-plus, LIMS-plus DNA and most recently CIMS. Our work in the areas of software development process and product management are paying clear dividends and our capacity expansion efforts are resulting in our ability to de- liver better software more quickly. providing forensic case management software. I’m extremely proud that we’ve been able to maintain so many relationships over such an extended peri-od.

This year, we are working hard on developing the relationships we have with other companies that offer complementary products in the forensic space to deliver solutions that offer the best possible val-ue for our customers. You’ve already heard about some of our efforts in past issues of the newsletter, and we continue to expand both the number and

the depth of those relationships. SAP's Crystal Re-port is one such partner, and this month’s customer service article is dedicated to helping you get more out of that tool as it is integrated to LIMS-plus. We’ve made tremendous progress in the develop-ment of our integration tools and you can expect to see some exciting announcements in the future.

This has been a busy and exciting time for Justice-Trax and I want to thank you all for your trust in us. We deeply appreciate your business and are work-ing hard to earn it every day.

We are proud to announce the release of the first version of JusticeTrax CIMS as of May 1, 2016. CIMS is a stand-

alone inventory management solution for tracking of laboratory consumables. The browser-delivery model of this software product allows authorized users to access the application from virtually anywhere in the lab, to maintain inventories and storage locations of not only laboratory reagents but any consumable materials along with their lot numbers, expiration dates, MSDS documentation, NFPA placard data and other relevant information.

Upon successful login, users are directed to the personalized, interactive Dashboard that summarizes essential information including: The current status of existing orders; Sortable lists of consumables that require re-order based on their remaining quantity, approaching expiry or re-order schedule; and even assignments of reagent Quality Control processes.

CIMS provides tracking functionality for Raw Materials from any Vendor and also supports the creation of Laboratory Prepared Materials based on

configurable recipes where two or more Raw Mate-rials can be combined to create analytical reagents. Users are able to create and receive Orders consist-ing of one or more vendor-provided materials so that the process of validating incoming inventory is streamlined, consistent and auditable resulting in potentially significant time and cost savings to Laboratories.

Our annual Customer Satisfaction Survey almost always yields useful results, and this year was no exception. We use this information to improve our applications,

processes, training, and communication. Some of the recommended improvements are already in process, and others will be addressed.

In general, the survey results suggest that there is some hesitancy among LIMS-plus v3 and v4 users to transition to v5. This may be because of features, additional setup requirements, or misun-derstanding of the offerings of LIMS-plus v5. Since its release, we have made numerous improvements and feature additions based on user feedback. We recommend that if you have not recently spoken to someone about transitioning to v5, reach out for more information and a solution tailored to your situation. We’ve heard your concerns about the costs to upgrade loud and clear, and we’ve been hard at work addressing those concerns. You can expect some announcements in the near future that will go directly to the heart of those concerns.

We also found that there continues to be interest in training, particularly where it can be delivered online. With the launch of JT Academy in Janu-ary of this year, we hope to meet more customers where they are, providing self-paced training beyond the typical documentation users expect.

Training courses for Portal, DNA, and LIMS-plus v5 are already available. Currently, v5 only includes courses on creating and using Dynamic User In-terfaces, but additional courses will be continually added throughout this year and beyond.

2015 Customer Survey Results

LIMS-plus v5 has improved substantially over the last year, and the differences in satisfaction levels between LIMS-plus v3 and LIMS-plus v5 have been greatly reduced. However, there is still much that we plan to do to improve LIMS-plus v5, including increasing reliabil-ity and simplifying installation.

LIMS-plus v3 vs. v5

Most respondents use LIMS-plus v3 rather than LIMS-plus v5. However, some use of LIMS-plus DNA and LIMS-plus v4 was also reported.

Meet the Staff: Peter LowryA native of Portland, Oregon and - of course - a serious devotee of the Oregon Ducks football team, Peter Lowry moved to Arizona about 18 years ago. He started at JusticeTrax a little more than three years ago as a senior developer and currently is the Senior Lead Developer for the LIMS-plus version 5 application. Peter is married with two children ages 9 and 4.

Since coming on board, he has mostly been involved with LIMS-plus Version 5. He leads a team of five development and two QA individuals, and works with product development and the Management Team to determine what features need to be added, what bugs need to be fixed, and to work with his development team to implement these requirements. In addition, he is involved with customers through the Customer Care Department as needed.

When asked what he would like to tell customers about his main task, he said, “Our main task is to produce a quality product. We want to make the users’ jobs easier and make them more productive.” For the future, Peter wants to see continuing improvements in perfor-mance and quality as well as greater integration between other applications JusticeTrax is developing or already has in house, e.g. LIMS-plus Portal, LIMS-plus DNA, and ChainLinx.

Peter tells me that his time at JusticeTrax has been an enjoyable work experience for him. He truly enjoys working here! His enthusiasm is catching, and that together with his ex-pertise in software development make JusticeTrax a key player in the LIMS industry.

Every organization is unique, and that’s why JusticeTrax spends a lot of effort serving and supporting the specific needs of each organization, including multiple types of public agencies and private companies. Providing this diverse support within a single code base is not without its challenges, however, and we need to work harder to make sure that we communicate the additional features more clearly.

Kevin Ardoin graduated with a degree in chemistry from LSU in Baton Rouge. He worked on the bench for the first 15 years of his career, and for the past 10 years has been the crime lab director of the Acadi-ana Crime Laboratory in New Iberia, Louisiana. His experience includes analysis of controlled sub-stances, fire debris, and blood and beverages for the determination of alcohol content.

The Acadiana Crime Lab services eight Parishes (the Louisiana equivalent of counties). Kevin started working at the lab in 1991 just when the laboratory’s founding

Director, Travis Owen retired, and has been there for 25 years. During that time he has seen many changes. The lab has been accredited since 2001. When Kevin started, there were eight employees; today there are 20. Naturally, DNA testing accounts for the major portion of his staff and accounts for six personnel, which include the supervisor, CODIS Administrator and Technical Leader. There are three trace evidence and firearms examiners, four chemistry examiners and the remainder are support and clerical personnel.

The Acadiana Crime Lab was one of four Beta test sites for JusticeTrax LIMS-plus and was the first of these sites to “go live” on August 1, 1996 – almost 20 years ago! Kevin reports that they have been using the drug module since the beginning and are currently evaluating the DNA module (LIMS-plus DNA). Since they have been using the system, they have been very happy with the way it helps them to keep track of cases and work assignments, and to maintain work-related statistics for the laboratory’s operation.

Louisiana’s forensic science delivery system is different from many other States. The State Police Laboratory was originally established in 1937 to serve all of Louisiana. By the 1970s, with the ex-plosion of drug cases and the availability of grant funding from the U.S. Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, the State passed legislation to cre-ate other regional labs to assist with the increased work. The new labs were set up as “Commissioned laboratories.” Sheriffs, District Attorneys, and Parish government representatives governed each Commission lab. The governing body was responsi-ble for the operations through the laboratory di-rector. Funding for the Acadiana Crime Laboratory is through local court costs, based on convictions, traffic offenses, costs of investigation, and funds through conditions of probation.

At the Acadiana lab, police agencies transport their evidence to the laboratory where it is logged into the LIMS-plus system and given a laboratory case number. The description of the evidence and chain of custody is created in the application. Case as-signments are also logged into the tracking system. Once the case is completed, the evidence is stored at the lab until the submitting agency picks up the evidence. Laboratory analytical reports are ac-cessed electronically by the submitting police agen-cies by means of a JusticeTrax ancillary product, iResults, eliminating the need to fax or mail reports. The laboratory uses Crystal Reports to generate the analytical reports and information for, among other uses, DNA grants to provide data on backlogs and case output.

Have you ever tried to print a crystal report only to find that the report takes a LONG time to generate? The culprit of this long load time might be the default printer

that is stored in the report template.

When a Crystal Report is created, it stores the de-fault printer of the machine on which it was devel-oped. This may cause issues when generating the report if your users do not have access to this print-er or if the printer becomes offline for any reason.

To avoid default printing issues, open your report template inside Crystal Reports. Select File – Page Set Up and select the No Printer checkbox. Re-save your report and as always, log out of the appli-cation and log back in to see the changes take effect.
