The vibrant tulips on our cover are by Amy Kaufman, a Newton born-and-bred artist who is acclaimed for her unique painted monotypes and paintings. Amy received her B.A. from Brandeis University and her M.F.A. from University of Pennsylvania. She is a Corporate Artist of the DeCordova Museum, a member of the Boston’s School of Museum of Fine Arts Medici Society, and a juried artist member of both the Cambridge and Cape Cod Art Associations. Amy’s art is showcased in prominent private, university, and corporate col-lections nationwide. She has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout New England, Pennsyl-vania, and New York. Her paintings are in the Hollywood movie Bride Wars (starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway), and her art was featured in the annual Southern New England Home magazine. One of Amy’s pear paintings was selected as part of the first juried exhibition at the Newton mayor’s office and was used for the announcement. Bouquet, a mixed-media piece, was chosen for a full page in the Newton Art Association’s brochure. Displayed along the fence by the Newton Free Library, her Squares was a juried selection as part of Newton’s FenceART banners. Visit Amy this April during Newton Open Studios, and see more of her work at: www.kaufmanart.com.

notesTo paraphrase the president of that hair club in those com-mercials: I’m not just a student of Newton Community Ed and a volunteer; now I’ve been hired!

I joined NCE as a volunteer in 2014. Since then I’ve helped in numerous capacities: covering our South office in late summer afternoons while Kids programs are running, help-ing Brenda run our Lifetime Learning program for seniors, helping Ursula with our Celebrate Newton craft fair, and proofing our catalogs and Kids brochures, to name a few. This September I was officially hired to manage the Kids Program onsite coordinators; in this capacity I’ve driven all over the city to look in on our after-school classes at the elementary and middle schools. Many of these schools are familiar to me, but the desks and chairs seem closer to the ground than I remember!

Growing up in Newton, I attended the Spaulding School, Meadowbrook Junior High, and Newton South. (Uh oh! Now you can figure out how old I am!) My husband went to Ward, Bigelow, and North in the days of the underground tunnels (two build-ings ago). My Mom graduated from Newton High School (when there was only one “Newton High”), and my two children also went through the Newton schools and graduated from South.

My parents and I were always active volunteers in Newton, for our PTOs and other organizations. The annual pumpkin sale, spring fairs, and sports banquets are ingrained in my memory. You may have seen me on Election Day over the last 25 years working at the polls; I’m currently Warden of Ward 8 Precinct 2. Or if you have enjoyed Sunday concerts at the Newton Free Library, you may have seen me there as a volunteer as well.

I was delighted to join NCE as a volunteer, because over the years I’ve taken so many NCE courses—from Belly Dancing to Digital Photography to our Mindfulness lec-tures, where I’m learning the value of living and working more compassionately and effectively. I hope you can take chances as I have done to learn new things and meet new people. Who knows where that may take you! And I hope to meet you you in the NCE office or elsewhere in my travels around town.

rEAL LOvE WITH SHArON SALZBErGTo love ourselves, we must know ourselves. To love one another, we must know one anoth-er. But our assumptions, distractions, fears, expectations, and personal sense of unworthi-ness obscure these kernels of truth. We yearn for connection with others -- but our minds get in the way, constantly spinning judgments about how we are fundamentally alienated from one another. As William James wisely ex-plained, our view of the world is truly shaped by what we decide to hear. We can train our-selves to change--to hear more of what is out there -- and to listen less to our limiting (and often self-condemning) thoughts along the way. Using core mindfulness and lovingkind-ness techniques, and other meditation exer-cises, Sharon Salzberg will guide participants through the process of seeing through layers of habit, whether rooted in fear, self-condem-nation or other mental conditioning, to find a truer meaning of love for themselves, their loved ones, and those they don’t know, but with whom they share this planet. This talk is suitable for both new and experienced media-tors, and will include guided meditations, and a question & answer session.

GOING SOLAr: WHAT’S rEALLY INvOLvED IN ADDING A rOOFTOP SOLAr SYSTEMCraig Forman, InstructorYou have seen them popping up on rooftops all over town—solar panels. You’ve probably also been flooded by suppliers offering to give you a free quote. Due to generous finan-cial (tax) incentives and relatively high cost of electricity, MA is actually one of the best states in the country for adding a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system. But selecting a supplier, understanding the real potential, and getting the project completed can be much more complex than the solar suppliers portray it. We will discuss the various com-ponents of a rooftop solar PV system and what it can do for both the environment and your household budget. We will investigate purchase versus leasing, what to look for when selecting a supplier, system design, financing, how to calculate break even time, and all the steps you need to follow bringing your rooftop solar system online.

BASIC DrAWINGGary Tucker, InstructorDrawing is the most approachable form of visual art. It is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and chal-lenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us—and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in ba-sic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In ad-dition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. Bring a 9x12 sketch-book, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener. Using a variety of me-dia such as pen, pencil, conte crayon, colored pencil, and others, you’ll learn how to create dimension and mass in your art. Focusing on this way of rendering, we’ll draw from still life, natural forms, and figures, as we explore abstraction in our work. We’ll also review some artists that are known for their technique, including Rubens, Michelangelo, Seurat, Rembrandt, and daVinci. SArGENT’S METHOD OF DrAWING Jack Neylan, InstructorJohn Singer Sargent’s paintings are world-re-nowned for their technique and beauty. However, during his lifetime as an artist and teacher, Sargent spent much of his time drawing. Sargent saw drawing not only as a valid medium in its own right, but as the fundamental medium for any artist. Learn Sargent’s techniques for drawing in both graphite and charcoal. You’ll begin with rec-reating his drawings and then gradually work towards creating your own work utilizing his methods. The course will culminate in two live-model sessions. Bring graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, and an 18x24 drawing pad to class. A $10-$20 model fee is payable to the instructor. No experience necessary.

PANOrAMIC PHOTOGrAPHY WOrkSHOPSteve McGrath, InstructorIt used to be that panoramic photos were taken only by professional photographers with wide-angle lenses and other expensive equipment. Now you can create your own beautiful panoramic pictures by combining multiple images with any photo-editing software on your computer. Modern family life is challenging. Days filled with work, chores, homework, and activities leave many families feeling over-whelmed. Mindfulness has been shown to be an effective tool for reducing stress and increasing resiliency. Through discourse, guided meditations, and question and answer we will explore the power of mind-fulness practice as it relates to family life.

finding Your Quiet Place: mindfulness Skills for Children and families

Being a parent can be stressful. When your child has a meltdown, or won’t follow directions, it can be difficult to keep your cool—let alone help your child to calm down and focus. Mindfulness can help. In this talk, two mindfulness authors and clinical social workers will share their experience teaching parents and children how to pay attention to the present moment with kindness and curiosity. Participants will practice exercises that they can do to build more harmonious family relationships.

Deborah Sosin, LICSW, MFA, is a writer, GrubStreet instructor, and clinical social worker specializing in mindfulness. Her picture book, Charlotte and the Quiet Place was named a Bronze

Winner by the National Parenting Publications Awards. Her essays have appeared in The Boston Globe Magazine, The Writer’s Chronicle, and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.

growing up mindful: encouraging Compassion and Connection in Children and teens

As our own practice deepens, many of us are seeking ways to share mindfulness with our children to prepare them for a world that is often less than compassionate. We cannot protect them from every challenge, but we can offer them the lifelong gift of mindful awareness. Mindfulness builds resilience for dealing with life’s challenges from childhood onward, and helps cultivate emo-tional, cognitive and spiritual intelligence in place of more stress, confusion and distraction. Dr. Willard will have copies of his new critically acclaimed book Growing Up Mindful for sale at the event.

Christopher Willard, Psy.D. is a Boston-based psychologist and educational consultant special-izing in mindfulness with adolescents and young adults. He has been practicing meditation for

over 15 years. He currently serves on the board of directors at the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy, and the Mindfulness in Education Network. Dr. Willard teaches at Harvard Medical School, has published five books, consulted to dozens of schools and institutions, and has led workshops on four continents.

LOvING COMMUNICATIONMichelle Schou & Michael Koran, InstructorsYou’re facing a tense exchange with some-one you’re close to ... a worrisome meeting with your supervisor... a conflict over your child’s behavior... or are “beating yourself up” for making a mistake. And you would like to simply create more loving commu-nication with others and yourself. So how can we more compassionately communi-cate? It’s all too easy to repeat old patterns: miscommunicating, feeling defensive, and re-acting quickly or with anger. To more successfully communicate we’ll learn skills described in Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life. Exercises each week will help us listen to ourselves and others with empathy to discover what we really feel and need. We’ll start with an intention to connect. Our first step will be to learn how to share evalua-tion-free observations. Separating feelings from thoughts will help us find what we and others really need and lead us to make doable requests. Learning these commu-nication skills will help our relationships with parents, children, friends, colleagues and ourselves—inspiring joyful giving and receiving. To help you get the most out of class, the instructor suggests that you get a copy of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life from the library or book-store, and bring it to the first class.

WrITE YOUr OWN OBITUArY (Or SOMEONE ELSE’S)Alice Lesch Kelly, InstructorAn obituary is an important document—a celebration of a person’s life. But for many people, it is written hastily by grief-stricken family members who lack important infor-mation about their loved one’s accomplish-ments. You can make sure your obituary says what you want by writing it yourself now, in this workshop. Or you can work together with your spouse, parent, or other loved one to write their obituary in advance. Obituaries can be written at any age, and can be added to in the future. By spending time writing an obituary beforehand, you can make sure it is a thoughtful, accurate reflection of a life well lived, rather than just a list of milestones.

ArCHErYDelicious Bow & Arrows staff, InstructorsFun fact: Newton was home to the nation’s first organized archery team, The Newton Archers, circa 1935. Honoring that legacy, NCE is pleased to offer this still-popular sport. Archery is a great option for those who prefer a noncompetitive individual sport to team sports. Certified instructors from Delicious Bow & Arrows will determine your dominant eye, explain the rules, and get you started, providing individualized instruc-tion throughout the class. Archers will learn technique, form, and accuracy. Equipment is provided. All levels welcome. Grades 3 & up.

MAkING THE MUSICALJaime Alberts, InstructorHave you ever wondered how to write a mu-sical? There’s only one way to find out! Join other musical theatre lovers for an in-depth exploration: we’ll study music and lyrics, talk to the composers and playwrights who make them, and finally, write an original musical. In last year’s trial run of this class, we talk-ed to composer Gaby Alter (Band Geeks), playwright Stephen Karam (The Humans), songwriter Joe Iconis (Smash), and others. Prior experience in playwriting or compos-ing is not required, but a general familiarity with musical theatre and comfort playing an instrument or singing is strongly recom-mended. Grades 9–12.

On with the Show

NEWTON SUMMEr STAGEDan Fabrizio, DirectorChris Roppola, Music DirectorBrad Jensen, Choreographer NCE is thrilled to bring back Newton Summer Stage, the wildly-popular summer theatre program for high schoolers. Summer Stage got displaced for a few years in the transition from the old North to the new North, but now it’s back in the state-of-the-art theatre wing of our wonderful new high school, with a new staff that’s raring to go!Join us this summer as we tell the story of Conrad Birdie, the rock and roll star who gets drafted into the army, as he stages one last publicity stunt in the small town of Sweet Apple, Ohio. Hone your acting skills, train your singing voice, and learn exciting choreography as we rehearse the much-beloved musical Bye Bye Birdie. Our experienced team will guide you through five weeks of rehearsals, culminating in two

fully-produced performances. In addition to working on the fundamentals of musi-cal theatre, you’ll explore the many other aspects of a theatrical production—design, construction, publicity, and more. No previ-ous experience necessary! Grades 9–12.Auditions will be held in late March/early April (the exact dates are TBA; check course ID KS152-S16 on our website for updates). Registration will open for cast members once casting is done. If you’d rather work behind the scenes, email: [email protected].

Ages & GradesAll grades listed are for Fall 2016. Please make sure you enroll your child in the ap-propriate class for his or her grade.

refundsOur summer classes fill fast, so we ask you to carefully consider your options before reg-istering for a class. If you change your mind before May 27, you can have a refund minus a $25 processing fee. After May 27, no re-funds or credits will be given. A transfer may be possible, space permitting. There is a $50 fee for each transfer.

Special NeedsIt is extremely helpful to us if you make us aware of your child’s special needs. Some classes are better suited than others for in-dividual kids, and we can help you choose an appropriate class. However, most of our teachers were not trained as special educa-tion teachers, and if your child receives spe-cial attention during the school year, we may not be able to provide that level of attention in our programs.

Behavior PolicyWe have a “three strikes and you’re out” policy. We expect students in our classes to follow their teacher’s instructions and treat each other and their teachers with respect. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will bring this to your attention. If your child’s behavior continues to be inappro-priate, you will receive a call from the NCE office and may be asked to remove your child from the program for the day. If after that there is still no change, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no re- fund will be given. We have a zero-toler-ance policy for inappropriate physical behav-ior. If a child inappropriately touches or acts to harm others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn with no further warnings, and no refund will be given.

How To Make A Full DayChoose the morning and afternoon pro-grams you want (making sure they’re run-ning at the same location) and sign up for lunch too. Our staff will take your child from the morning class to lunch and from lunch to the afternoon class, and you can pick up from there. There is no need to sign up for lunch if your child is enrolled in a class that runs from 9–2:30 or later, as they will have lunch as a class. Lunch is not offered for kids who are enrolled in a single half-day pro-gram. You must bring your own lunch.

Extended DayOur staff will bring your child to the des-ignated Extended Day location and you can pick up there. Extended Day runs until 5:30pm. We will not pro-rate our fee for Extended Day, but you are welcome to send your child for fewer than five days. Please let us know if you plan to do this. Please be prompt; there are no late pick-ups!

Snacks & LunchPlease bring your own snacks for half-day programs, and lunch as well for full-day ones.

AllergiesPlease let us know ahead of time. We want to provide a safe environment for all of our students, so we’re glad to alert a student’s class when we learn of any specific allergies. However, we may have difficulty accommo-dating you in our cooking classes.

What To Do When A Class Is FullAlways sign up for the waitlist! It’s free, and we often get last-minute changes. You can always turn down a spot if it’s offered to you.

PhotosWe may occasionally take pictures of kids in our classes for use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval for this.

Self-DismissalIf you provide your child’s teacher with a signed note from you, your child can self-dismiss from his or her class.

Discounts/ScholarshipsWe do not offer discounts on our Kids pro-grams. Partial scholarships are available on a limited basis for Newton residents. Call us for more information.

How To Find Your ClassCome to the main entrance of the school and you’ll have help from there. We’ll have color-coded signs and friendly staff to guide you, and in some cases we may send you specific directions by email too.

Late Pick-Up FeesLate pick-ups will be charged as follows: 1st time: $25 for each 10 minutes you’re late. 2nd time: $50 for each 10 minutes you’re late. If you’re late three times over the summer, you will be asked to withdraw your child from our program and no refund will be given.
