  • Be flexible. That was the advice of alumni Jeff Miltzow 07 and Ryan Wories 09, who shared their career journeys with business students during an interview on February 16 with Dr. Lynn White, professor of business and the Colleges 2014 Professor of the Year. Miltzow and Wories majored in accounting and marketing, respectively, at Trinity. Miltzow advised being willing to switch roles. Dont hold out for the perfect job, he said, explaining the value of learning something from every experience. Similarly, Wories emphasized the importance of keeping an open mind during the job search and taking opportunities that seem to veer from an intended career path.

Miltzow and Wories also expressed an appreciation for their liberal arts background, something they said employers value. They advised students to talk with potential employers about their involvement in clubs, organizations, and leadership roles. The event was representative of the many opportunities students have to learn from alumni. In January, students had the opportunity to connect with nearly 20 companies and organizations in the Chicagoland area through the special course Exploring Chicago Business. Alumni and friends of the College served as guest speakers and welcomed students to visit their respective businesses.

New Book Reviewed by the Los Angeles Times and The New Yorker

On the outskirts of the Petrified Forest in the Painted Desert of Northeast Arizona is a pile of rocks, hot rocks, that had been stolen and eventually returned. Many of the ones that find their way back are accompanied by letters of apology from people who claim the ancient pieces of wood bring bad luck.

Photographs of the rocks and facsimiles of some of these conscience letters comprise the new book Bad Luck, Hot Rocks by Ryan Thompson, chair of the art and design department. The book, co-authored by Phil Orr, recently received positive reviews in The New Yorker and the Los Angeles Times.
