Would knowing some German, Japanese or Chinese help you with your job? How about learning some Oceanography, Meteorology or even Astronomy? The following courses are part of the Shared Services courses being offered through Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). Beginning Chinese I CHI 101-E05N You will learn basic skills in standard Mandarin Chinese, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. While a brief introduction will be given to Chinese characters, the major emphasis is on learning to speak and comprehend Mandarin. Part I of II. [44233] • Virtual • 5 credits

Beginning Chinese II CHI 102-E05N You will learn basic skills in standard Mandarin Chinese, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Beginning German I GER 101-E05W You will learn basic sentence structure and general information about the geography, customs, and culture of German-speaking countries. This course will help you to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through a variety of strategies that address different learning styles. [44234] • Virtual • 5 credits

Introduction to Japanese II JPN 102-E05A A continuation of JPN 101-E06N. You will develop a greater proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Japanese while learning a limited context of vocabulary and structures. Through this course, you will be introduced to the Japanese culture. The class will require at least half an hour of listening/speaking out loud with a CD or sound file every day, and 2-3 hours of total preparation will be required each week. Oceanography I GOL 111-E05L/GOL 111-ES1LYou will be introduced to the principles of physical, chemical and geological oceanography. Through this course, you will develop an understanding and appreciation for the world’s oceans and processes, as well as the Earth’s environment. Oceanography II GOL 112-E05L/GOL 112-ES1L You will be introduced to the principles of physical, chemical and geological oceanography. Meteorology NAS 125-E05L/NAS 125-ES1L Through this course, which uses the American Meteorological Society’s text and materials, you will be introduced to meteorology. Weekly assignments and deadlines are part of this course, which includes web-based instruction and research. Elements of NAS 130-E0SL/NAS 130-ES1L AstronomyYou will be introduced to a survey of astronomy that includes a study of the physical nature of the universe, the solar system, stars, nebulae and galaxies. Pharmacy TechnicianGES 117 - 300 hours Learn the skills you need to become a pharmacy tech in a hospital or retail setting with the Pharmacy Technician Online Certification Training Program. You’ll gain the skills and knowledge to qualify for entry-level positions in pharmacies, and you’ll be prepared for national certification. This program pairs students with an instructor for one-on-one assistance and includes a forty-hour externship.

If you’re interested in becoming a pharmacy technician, this program is for you! No health care or medical office work experience is required to take this program.

Phlebotomy Technician ProgramAs a Phlebotomy Technician, the laboratory relies on you to collect quality samples from the patient to produce quality laboratory results. To do this, a phlebotomy technician must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe and reliable manner. This 88-hour course is intended for those who have no experience and want to become employed as a Phlebotomy Technician in a clinical laboratory or public health department setting. Students work in teams practicing on each other. The course includes 64 hours of classroom training and a 100-hour externship to provide you with a complete learning experience. Groundsman Training Course

This 128-hour comprehensive training program covers the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical distribution and transmission lines and equipment. Training topics include safety, protective equipment, knot tying, basic work zone, grounding equipment, transformers, flagging, CPR/First Aid, and a 10-hour OSHA course. This program has been approved by the Workforce Investment Board and the Virginia Employment Commission for those who qualify for their tuition assistance.

Teaching on the Crooked Road

Teaching on the Crooked Road EDU 295“The Crooked Road” is Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. “Teaching on The Crooked Road” introduces materials and methods for teachers to incorporate the musical traditions of Southwest Virginia into the K-12 curriculum. The course will examine the region’s history, musical styles, musicians and geographical venues. Instructional techniques will include storytelling, demonstration, audio and visual presentations, and field trips. Teachers and others who take this class will gain insight into bringing traditional music into their teaching through integration with SOLs, and have the opportunity to develop lesson plans for their classrooms and for sharing. Instructor, David Winship, is a retired public school educator from Washington County, Virginia, and a native of Bristol, Tennessee. He served as curator and education director for the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance (BCMA) during its formative years and serves on The Crooked Road’s Education Committee. David developed the Living Legacies program of the BCMA for the Library of Congress Folklife Collection and has worked with the Smithsonian Institution on educational materials related to traditional music.

The Manufacturing Technology Center (MTC) is a not-for-profit organization partially funded by federal and state resources. Our primary mission is to help industries in Southwest Virginia become more competitive. All MTC Project Managers have an average of more than 20 years of hands-on experience in a wide range of industries. Help Available for Dislocated Workers

A dedicated staff has joined Virginia Highlands Community College specifically to help dislocated workers in our region get enrolled, be successful on campus, and prepare for reentry into the workforce.

A U.S. Department of Labor grant allowed the VHCC Division of Workforce Training and Continuing Education to hire Adult Career Coach Teresa Taylor and Scott Hoagland, experiential learning and job placement coordinator. The grant program, known as the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT) program, is charged with recruiting dislocated workers and providing individualized services until they are working once again.

Taylor assists students by developing career and educational plans for them, assisting them in securing financial aid, helping them to utilize support services, and providing general guidance and encouragement. Hoagland is responsible for helping students acquire internships and other real-world training opportunities, and assist them in searching for jobs, developing a resume, and preparing for job interviews.

Diagnostic Approaches for Energy AuditsThis class is the second part of the energy auditor program. Although typically taken immediately following the classroom part, some students will take this class as a refresher in diagnostic procedures and equipment used in performing energy audits. This class will be conducted in a lab and/or field environment. Students will work with all equipment necessary to conduct full-scale energy audits. Diagnostic procedures will be covered to prepare students to take BPI or HERS field tests. Journeymen, Master Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC mechanics, and Gas Fitters are now required by the Virginia Board of Contractors to take a predetermined number of continuing education hours specific to their trade as part of the licensing renewal process.

Anyone obtaining or renewing a license must take continuing education in his/her respective profession. Plumbers, HVAC technicians and Electricians must take three hours of continuing education in their field. Gas Fitters must take one hour. (This one hour class for Gas Fitters is intended for Journeyman and Master Gas Fitters, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Fitters, and Natural Gas Fitters.)

All classes are recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation and the Virginia Board of Contractors. A workbook highlighting the changes is included in the cost of each class and will be distributed when participants arrive for class.

Do you have a cancellation policy?The College reserves the right to cancel any course that does not have sufficient enrollment. The decision is usually made two days prior to the first scheduled class meeting and all registrants will be notified promptly. A full refund is processed automatically. To help prevent cancellations, please register at least five days before a course is scheduled to begin.

Do you offer a Senior Citizen discount?In non-credit classes that have met sufficient enrollment, senior citizens (60 years of age or above) may register in a non-credit course, tuition free, on a space available basis. In the case of a class that has insufficient paying enrollment, all senior citizens will be required to pay the full tuition for the class. Limit three classes per semester, ed2go & certification classes are not eligible. Senior citizens eligible for tuition free classes must qualify and pay for any additional material fees.

Can I get a non-credit refund?In non-credit classes, full refunds will be given if a course is cancelled or if a student withdraws three days prior to the course. In order to receive a refund, request can be made in writing, by phone (276)739-2430, or in person.

Non-Credit Tuition PolicyNon-credit prices are listed beside each course and are for one class participant. Some may not include course material charges or supplies, which vary with each class.

Refund Policy for CompaniesA company that pays for an employee who is unable to attend must cancel enrollment at least three days prior to the class. Otherwise, the company will be charged.

When can I sign up?If space is still available in a class, registrations are taken until the first day of the class. However, we encourage you to sign up early to prevent a class from being cancelled due to low enrollment.
