CHS DRAGON NEWS
A Col l ie rv i l le H igh School PTSA Publ icat ion 2012 -2013
Dear Parents:
As I reflect back over the first semester and my first half-year as
principal of Collierville High School, I can’t help but think of how
fortunate I am to work in such a great school in such a supportive
community. Last May when I met with the faculty and some of the
students I asked them to tell me what they perceived to be the greatest
strengths of CHS. When I tallied up the responses the vast majority reported that a
sense of true community and the building of relationships helped this high school
stand out above all others. To put it briefly, I agree! The students, faculty, staff, and
parents of this school have made me feel right at home and I do feel a real sense of
care, pride, and compassion for others in this school.
As the second semester approaches midpoint, it is a good time to once again set goals,
both academically and personally. Parents, please take time to sit down with your
sons and daughters to discuss their grades and their future plans. Students, please
be open with your parents about your dreams and share with them your academic
goals. Our teachers and administrators will also be setting new goals and we’ll be
sharing those in the near future.
As always, please continue to be involved in your child’s education and feel free to
contact the school if we can assist in that endeavor. As the saying goes, it takes a
village to raise a child. Working together we can and will make a positive difference
for our students and our community.
Sincerely,
Russell T. Dyer, Ed.D.

1st Annual SCHOOLS FOR A CURE
SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2013
Gather your club or booster organization for an exciting opportunity to join with the
Collierville Community for SCHOOLS FOR A CURE. Take advantage of this chance to
partner alongside all eight Collierville schools working towards a common goal. It's totally
up to you to decide on a way for your students to participate! This first annual SCHOOLS
FOR A CURE will be held at Collierville High School from 8AM - 4PM on April 6th.
This is a chance to highlight your students by preparing a pay-to-play game for others to
enjoy, sell a product or snack, or any other method you might have to raise funds towards
the CHS goal of raising $5,000 towards a corporate donation to Collierville Relay for Life
cancer research. The carnival/fair outdoor atmosphere lends itself to any enticing activity
allowing children to participate and families to enjoy. The event will take place rain or
shine! It’s a great chance for service hours and team building. We hope your group or team
will choose to participate as well as share this opportunity with others. Please consider this
chance to get your folks together for a great cause and some springtime fun!
Contact Michelle Kelley at [email protected] for further details.

As this school year winds down, the counselors are working on upcoming events such as graduation, registration
for next year, and summer school. Graduation will be Saturday, May 18th @ 4:00 P.M. at Bellevue Baptist
Church. Graduation practice will be at 8:00 A.M. on May 16th at Bellevue Baptist Church. Ms. Wall will be
sending out specific information about the graduation ceremony to seniors and their families.
All students are in the process of completing the course selection and verification process for next year. We
encourage you to spend time discussing these selections with your child. At some point during the 4th nine weeks,
a verification form with your child’s course selections will be sent home for a parent signature. We will be running
a seven-period schedule next year, so all students must enroll in a minimum of six classes with either a study hall
or a 7th academic class. If your child will be taking any honor or AP courses next year, please have him or her
check to see if there is any summer work required in those courses. Most of the honor and AP courses require
summer work. Please encourage your son or daughter to complete this work early in the summer. Also, please be
aware that all students enrolled in an AP course are required to pay for and take the AP exam and all students
enrolled in a dual enrollment class will be required to pay the tuition cost.
We are in the process of planning summer school. Please call the guidance office @ 854-2340 at the close of the
school year if you have any questions concerning summer school. Please continue to check your child’s grades on
PowerSchool at https://ps.scsk12.org/public/ to determine whether or not your son or daughter may need to attend
summer school.
Looking ahead to the next school year, the first day of classes for the 2013-14 school year will
be Monday, August 5th. To view the complete 2012-2013 school calendar, go to the SCS home

I would like to personally thank the PTSA for their continued support and encouragement.

United 4 Students
The Purpose for United 4 Students is to promote parent, student and community involvement in the merger of the Shelby
County Educational System and to raise awareness among the Shelby County leaders (School Board, County
Commissioners, Judges, Legislators) of our Community’s commitment to the success of our educational system on behalf
of ALL students in the district. At this time, a united front is the most viable option to all schools.
Our first appeal will be to campaign to the County Commissioners, but be mobilized and ready to shift/add focus onto
other individuals or groups in a position to make decisions. There are two parts to our campaign:
(1) T-shirts – We will be creating a t-shirt with a logo on the front, with the words, “United 4 Students” . We will sell
these t-shirts at cost. The objective is to get as many people as possible throughout the county (including Memphis) to
wear these t-shirts (parents, students, supporters). When we have a particular event we need to rally, we can all wear the
same t-shirt. For those who cannot make those events, they can still show their support by wearing the t-shirts the same
day. We think this will make a huge visual impact to those in power, as well as get media attention.
(2) Postcards – we will be creating postcards. We hope to get thousands of these cards signed by parents and students to
take to the Shelby County Commission at a strategic date, to be determined later highlighting our message.
Cards will have a place for individuals to sign in agreement.
CHOOSE no reduction of services to students
LISTEN to the ideas shared by the community and parent body; APPLY input when making
decisions
EMPLOY accountability and REPORT budget activity
DIMINISH personal agendas in conflict with student success
Won't you please consider being a part of this effort?

FOCUS ON FRESHMAN
This is another beginning in a long line of beginnings in your
life. You have already completed the first semester of your
freshman year and should have a general understanding of how
high school works and some of the expectations you need to
meet during your first year in high school. Whatever your
interests now or upon graduation, below are some points to
consider and follow to make your next few years at Collierville
High School a success. • Get to know your counselor and your teachers. Counselors can
help with any number of issues, as well as, help you choose
what classes best fit your high school requirements, needs and
graduation plans. Your teachers can help you with any
difficulties in class, but they will also be the individuals you
will ask to write college and internship recommendations. It is a
difficult task to write a recommendation for a student you know
little about. • Take courses which will sharpen your skills for college and
enhance your admission prospects. • Talk with your teachers to determine the appropriate levels of
course placement for the next three years. Challenge yourself to
take honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment courses to stretch your
abilities and knowledge. Familiarize yourself with the
Advanced Placement (AP) course selections at CHS. • Review your high school transcript as you build it. Know your
GPA (Grade Point Average - points awarded for your class
grade divided by the number of courses and calculated at the
end of each semester) and class rank so you can determine
whether your achievements are in line with your goals, and
become aware of any improvements you might need to make. • Know your graduation requirements. See me if you have
questions. • Look into and participate in enrichment/service programs and
activities which will enhance your resume for college and
scholarship opportunities. • Begin to research careers and colleges. Use online resources.
1. College Foundation – cfnc.org
2. College Board – collegeboard.com
3. College Confidential – collegeconfidential.com
• Start a folder with all of your activities, awards, honors and
community service. A computer generated spreadsheet may be
a very good way to organize and store the information. • READ, READ, READ! The best way to prepare for the
SAT/ACT tests. Happy ending to your Freshman year! Best wishes for a
fabulous summer- Mrs. Jana J. Blanchard, Freshman Counselor
SOMETHING FOR SOPHOMORES
Well, this is your last quarter and last semester before you reach the halfway mark in your high school career. This is the time to go over your study habits, note taking process, and organizational skills to make sure you are working as efficiently and successfully as possible. Remember your teacher is your best resource to achieve this status per class. By talking with them, you can study and present more accurate and efficient information which in turn leads to an increase in self-confidence and class success. Tutoring to gain understanding and mastery of skills is available before and after school, especially on Fridays in the library or study hall from 6:45 – 7:15 am. Take advantage of this assistance.
Remember to check out 5 schools you are interested in
attending after graduation. Look for courses that you
need for their entrance requirements or an advantage for
when you get there. Major point here……….. There is
a place for everyone to continue their education
and to receive some money assistance! Don't forget
to bookmark and look through Mrs. Comella's website
for upcoming meetings with her or recruiters, summer
opportunities, and scholarship information. Course
selection forms should have been turned in by now to
Mrs. Bell and you will soon receive the verification form
listing your choices. This is when you go by and get the
Honors/AP form needing teacher signatures to attach.
The signed Honors/AP form attached to the verification
form and including any AP fees are due when
announced. Throughout this selection process, I
appreciate your patience and diligence in meeting the
deadlines I set for returns.
You will have a chance to qualify for exam exemption
this semester in May. To qualify, you must have a 90
average between Q3 and Q4 grades AND 3 or less
excused absences. Everyone HAS to take EOC tests and
remember the test is 25% of your semester grade. Be
prepared, well rested and ready for the days of testing…..
EOC, AP testing and semester exams. Study guides
should be completed and reviewed BEFORE you begin
exams; not just the night before you take them.
As it has been stated many times in reference to many
areas, the Class of 2015 IS smart, IS kind and IS
important. Reminder that you need to show not only
your intelligence, capabilities, and talents, but to also
promote your personal interests and volunteerism that
makes you special and different. INDIVIDUALITY…..
What makes you a fabulous YOU?
Please allow me or Mr. Fuller to know if we can help
with anything. We don't want anything to fester into
something bigger, when we could have addressed it at
the onset.
Patricia Bell, Sophomore Counselor
Brian Fuller, Assistant Principal 10th Grade
The Alive at 25 Defensive Driving Course
will be offered to all 9th graders in their Wellness Classes
in the month of April. This lifetime wellness curriculum is an
instrumental part of CHS, the Town of Collierville, and the
CHSPTSA's efforts to educate and encourage safe
teenage driving. This highly interactive program
encourages young drivers to take responsibility for their
driving behavior. We know that this course will help
change bravado to confidence for our teenagers.

Wow! It has been a busy Spring semester… course selections and
verifications, preparing for the ACT, and just keeping up with our daily
load of assignments and homework. I have probably said that the junior
year is the toughest well over 1,000 times. Now you are all finding out that
I was right! HOWEVER, hold on just a little longer… The light at the end
of the tunnel is getting bigger and brighter!
Here are some VERY important things that you need to remember:
MARCH 19th– ALL JUNIORS WILL TAKE THE ACT No registration is needed for this test. We have taken care of that here at
school. Teachers have been preparing their students through ACT focused
bell work and other small assignments. Also, all juniors took a full-length
practice test last semester and received the results on the first day back in
January. It is our hope that all of our 11th graders will feel confident and
READY to do well on this ACT testing. This test does count as a national
test date and scores earned can be sent to colleges and universities for
admission purposes. Remember, this test is FREE! Please make sure that
your child is at school ON TIME on Tuesday, March 19th. We are excited to
be able to offer this ACT to our juniors and we are expecting great results!
Thank you, thank you, thank you… to the army of parents that have helped
to get the ACT picnic ready! The Class of 2014 will eat like kings and
queens that day. It is always such a great way to celebrate all of the hard
work that’s been put into preparation.
Course Registrations and Verifications
I met with all students one on one during their English classes during
February in order for students to make their course requests. Course
verifications will come home in April for your approval. It is very important
that your child has looked into the admission requirements for the college
or university that they wish to attend. Please check with them to make sure
that they have done this. We cannot make changes to schedules once final
verifications have been signed in April.
Senior Year is coming! It is hard to believe that the beginning of our senior year is just around the
corner! You will soon be receiving information concerning senior pictures. It
is very important that you meet the deadlines to have pictures made and
selected for the yearbook. You will want to make sure that your child is able
to be included in their senior yearbook.
Finally, Let’s finish this year strong! Spring fever is a serious condition that most students suffer from after
Spring Break! Please help us by insisting your child be at school, study for
test and quizzes, and complete all assignments on time. If summer school
becomes necessary, I will have information on registration in the guidance
office after the first of May.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me!

I would like to congratulate Lina Zhang who is the Valedictorian for the Class of 2013! Lina has held this
position since her freshmen year and she has excelled in countless honors and AP courses. In addition to her
academic accomplishments, she is currently serving as the Senior Class President. She has left a tremendous
footprint on CHS and will be missed greatly!
I would also like to congratulate Jennifer Zhang who is the Salutatorian for the Class of 2013! Jennifer has
also taken countless honor and AP courses and excelled in all of them. She is currently serving as the Senior Class
Senator and playing on our Varsity lacrosse team. Jennifer has also made a lasting impact on CHS!
This year is not over yet so please encourage your student to keep working hard in his/her classes. Everyone must
pass his/her senior classes in order to be awarded a diploma in May. It is more important than ever for everyone to
come to school and to work hard!
Being the counselor for this group of 450+ students has truly been an honor and a blessing. I am so proud of
everything each student has accomplished and I have loved hearing what each student’s plans are for next year.
As you all know, this is my first graduating class and they will forever hold a very special place in my heart! I
have cried my way through all of the milestones this year and am looking forward to seeing each graduate walk
across the stage on May 18!

United States Presidential Scholar Candidates
The United States Presidential Scholars Program recognizes and honors some of our Nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Students have the opportunity to become Presidential Scholars based on two paths of accomplishment. The majority of the Scholars are selected on the basis of broad academic achievement. The academic component of the program selects students who have scored exceptionally well on the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment through the October scores of the senior year of high school. Approximately twenty males and twenty females are considered to compete each year from each state. One male and one female will represent each state and travel to Washington D.C. in April. CHS has had eighteen candidates during the past thirteen years. Congratulations
to our 2013 United States Presidential Scholar candidate Laura Wade!
