John O’Conor (In conjunction with the Annual Harold Protsman Classical Period Piano Competition)
John O’Conor has earned a worldwide reputation as a masterful
interpreter of the Classic and early-Romantic repertoires. A native of
Dublin, he studied in Vienna with the renowned pedagogue Dieter
Weber, won First Prize at the Beethoven International Piano
Competition in Vienna in 1973, and made a special study of
Beethoven with the legendary German pianist Wilhelm Kempff. Since
then he has performed around the world.
His recordings on the Telarc label have brought him particular fame.
CD Review described his boxed set of the complete Beethoven
sonatas as “Beethoven playing at its best.” The New York Times
named his recording of the Beethoven bagatelles as the best
available and his recording of the John Field nocturnes spent many
weeks on the Billboard charts. His recently released recordings of the
complete Beethoven piano concertos with the London Symphony
Orchestra, conducted by Andreas Delfs, have been greeted with
great acclaim.
He has been decorated with l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the

Continuing – Feb. 9Baron and Ellin Gordon Self-taught Gallery“Woman, Image and Art”
The majority of known, collected and discussed self-taught artists are men. Images of women in cultureoften express artists’ idealization, ambivalence orwariness – a force to be controlled. The womanmay be seen as a seductress leading men to sinand ruin. These complicated roles ascribed towomen defy easy explanation. Lewis Smith’s “ThreeWomen” are circus performers demonstrating theirskill and strength. Their costumes are form-fitting andseductive. Though strong, they must be feminineand alluring, never masculine or dominating. Incontrast, Annie Blandings’ “Barn” portrays couplesdancing, rapt in each other. The woman is anadored partner that holds the family together. Thedrawing itself is pure and ethereal.

Meaning in art can come from recognizablesubjects and identifiable narratives, or it cancome from the manner and degree to which theartist’s hands have worked the material. In mostcases it is a combination of all of these factors, but different works of art emphasize one oranother to varying degrees.
This show will juxtapose disparate objects in orderto highlight thematic and visual connectionsacross time, style and locales.
