Presidents Message Earlier this year we held a fundraiser to sell lines for placement of an Ad in the catalog for the Columbia Terrier Association all Terrier Show.

The show will be held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, Timonium, Maryland on Friday, April 22, 2011. Thanks to many of you we were able to fill two (2) pages in the catalog. We have reproduced the list of names as they will appear in the ad.

Funds raised from the ad will be used to pay for veterinary care, food and other sup-plies for the rescued Westie’s. On behalf of Westie Rescue, our thanks to those of you who once again supported this fundraiser and our efforts to provide continued care for our rescued Westie’s.

Spring brought beautiful weather for the Super Pet Expo in March and the week-end was busy with the Westies attracting plenty of attention. Our Westies did their part in this exciting event. Annie and Andy worked diligently covering the Friday night shift; on Saturday, Boy and Marshie greeted everyone with tail wags and kisses from the kissing booth; and on Sunday, Andy and Cosmo worked the morning crowd with a happy dance for the visitors. No one could resist those adorable faces! Our volunteers welcomed visitors and answered questions about our rescue program. We accepted donations for Westie themed items. Toby The Therapist Submitted by Mary Ann Kalwarski

Dogs are the best medicine and Westies are the best of the best! I recently fell and fractured my left arm. My three little dogs pitched in to encourage me to keep moving, but Toby was the one who really helped push me through the physical therapy exercises.

Toby’s hilarious facial expressions as I endured the rigorous exercises encouraged me to work through the pain whenever I wanted to give up. I’m sure he was anticipating lots of treats when I did those “wall crawls” with my hand on the kitchen wall. He must have thought I was reaching for the treat jar. Lying on the bed, he would peek over and “count” as I stretched out on the floor lifting a cane back over my head and down to the floor (notice, he got the bed). When I did my pendulum swings, Toby sat on the chair wagging his tail and trying to lick my face.

Toby made certain that I got plenty of fresh air by insisting on walks outside on those freezing and windy winter days. We also kept to a strict feeding schedule so that we wouldn’t miss breakfast, lunch or dinner. I’m positive that he was only helping me keep up my strength! My boy was a perfect little therapist!

Easy No Sew Toy

Step 1: Cut three (3) pieces of fleece 3” wide by 30” wide long. Step 2: Tie a knot in one end of the fabrics leaving about 4 inches from the edge. Hold the knot between your knees and braid the fleece strips. Step 3: Tie a knot in the end of the braid. Now you have made a dog toy.

10th Anniversary Celebration Press Release Westie Rescue, Inc. has collected the best recipes from group members, family and friends and compiled them into an attractive keepsake cookbook.

We will begin selling these one-of-a-kind cookbooks in June for $10.00. They may be purchased from any member of the organization at our Whine N Westies events. All proceeds will go to providing spays, neuters, vaccines, microchips and medical treatment for our rescued Westies. The cookbook contains a favorite celebrity recipe in addition to 130 well-loved recipes including appetizers, main dishes, desserts and many others. Daisy Dishes Submitted by Durie White

Hi, readers-it’s Daisy: I always look forward to this time of year. The cold winter months are about to end and my favorite social season has arrived. This year, Fat Tuesday fell on March 8, so the Mystic Krewe of College Bark held its Mardi Gras Pawrade the preceding Sunday. The Westie Meetup group our people joined on our behalf hosted this annual event. Of course, my sibs and I wore our purple, gold and green collars-Laissez les bons temps roulez! The Pawrade itself was rained out, but we enjoyed the savory smells of gumbo and other “Nawlins” fixings while frolicking with other canine guests in attendance. In addition to Westies (definitely the majority of invitees), we rubbed paws with a Scottie, a poodle and a Jack Russell. Next up on the social calendar is the Dulles Pet Expo. Chanel, Mystic and I are not enamored of the crowds at the Expo, but since our people volunteer to staff the Westie Rescue Inc. booth, we have asked them to serve as our personal shoppers during their off-hours. Certainly there will be merchandise suitable for our refined taste. The one negative experience I have endured during this otherwise lovely time of year was a visit to our vet to have my teeth cleaned. But even that trial was mitigated by the fact that I was in a locale that has been frequented by a celebri-ty. Our vet’s Scottish Deerhound won the 2011 Westminster dog show! Yes, readers, I set paw in a space tread upon by the owner and acquaintances of Hickory. I have asked to “friend” her on Facebook, but so far, no response. I’m sure it’s an oversight. Our friendship with Marty the Maltese garnered us an invitation to attend a White Tie and Tail Doggie Prom to benefit United Maltese Rescue. The invitation has been extended to both people and leashed, human/dog-friendly pets. My people plan to attend with Marty’s people and we may accompany them if my personal shopper finds suitable attire for my sibs and me. Speaking of attire, I must go through my wardrobe to unpack my spring clothes and put away the winter kilts. So ciao for now. Your dishing diva, Daisy

Alumni News… Hi Glenda, I wanted to say thank you one more time for so much! We met up with Rick on time with no trouble and Allison and I were so happy to meet Duffy! He is a little doll and has made himself right at home. He slept with me last night and doesn't seem a bit out of sorts. Thanks so much for taking such good care of him and letting us make him a part of our home. Also, thanks for the goodie bag and food! My best to you and Rick and the girls, Kathi

Please accept this donation in honor of Frosty our beloved little friend and neighbor. His loving owner is Katherine Chenault. Thank you very much.

The Kirk family

Happy Spring. Paddy is doing well at my neighbors. My 4 year old Westie, Peggy Ann is a great companion. She has been very helpful since my heart attack last April, getting me out of bed and walking at least twice a day—good for cardio rehab!

Regina Van Doren

Thanks for the note pads. As previously reported by email, Alfie passed away in August 2010.

Best wishes to “Westie Rescue” in the future and thanks for all the love and happiness Alfie gave me.

Sincerely,

Linda Long

In Memory of Bayle Rainbow Bridge February 9, 2010 Bayle was quite the charmer, clown and entertainer. She was a great keeper of the many secrets that I told her. Definitely had a Westie "tude" when she wanted to. She was the social butterfly of the neighborhood. When we went for walks....she went to socialize, not take care of "business". She was smart and knew many words and knew how to get what she wanted. She loved people, especially the kids, other dogs, as long as they weren't in her house, squirrels, rabbits, rides in the car and opening presents. She was my fur baby & companion and loved by all that knew her. Bayle did not like dressing up in her many pretty sweaters and coats. She would just stand there and not move until I took them off her. Now Bayle has gone to Rainbow Bridge. I love her and will always miss her. Thank you for the honor, of allowing me to share my life with her. Till we meet again Bayle.....my sweet ba-by.... Dee Smith Dear Karen & Bob, Thanks so much for Kenzie’s toys. She loves playing with them and her green bear is still her favorite. I can’t tell you how much we love this dog. She has brought such joy into our home. We have been walking many miles. I think she has her heart set on a ten-minute mile and we may get there soon! She is still barking at the animals on TV and was ready to take on two whales a few days ago. Thanks for this wonderful dog. Susan
