Spring 2011 “Every great city needs a great park that needs great friends!” John E. Popp’s widow bequeathed $25,000 for a memorial to her husband, a wealthy lumberman and music lover. In 1937 the Fountain was completed. It was designed by the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts. The Fountain’s center waterspout with the stylized dolphins was designed by Enrique Alferez. Hundreds of weddings and parties were held at the Fountain and thousands of visitors came to admire it. In 1990, it was completely restored with the Friends of City Park donating some of the money. Following Hurricane Katrina work began again. Area Near Popp Fountain is Flourishing For many decades, the focus of City Park’s activities have centered around the area border- ing Bayou Metairie, the Museum, the tennis courts, the Carousel Gardens, the Casino, the Botanical Garden, Amusement Park and Storyland. Suddenly, the focus has shifted and is now being shared with the area around Popp Fountain. The Fountain itself has been cleaned, restored and re-landscaped with physical help from the Friends’ volunteers and volunteers from all over the United States. A gift of $500,000 was presented by the Friends of City Park to help in the construction of the Arbor Room, a huge facility next to Popp Fountain, which will be used for parties and weddings and is scheduled to open by July 1. The new City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center nearby were dedicated on March 24 and will shift the tennis activity to the area near Popp Fountain. The Dog Park, which was partially funded with a $25,000 donation from the Friends of City Park, is in the same area as Popp Fountain and brings hundreds of people and their dogs to the park on a daily basis. A RENAISSANCE IN CITY PARK In the meantime, plans are being made for the construction of the Miniature Golf Complex to be built across from the Amusement Park. Some of the monies for the Complex will be a donation from Friends who have dedicated all of its funds raised at “Lark in the Park 2011” to the Miniature Golf Complex. The Renaissance of the Park following Hurricane Katrina continues and the Friends of City Park has had a great hand in it with physical labor and finances. Constantin, the culinary delights. The evening proved memorableunder a magical, full moon.

As the thematic campaign “Swing Fore City Park!” inspired bythe artwork of renowned artist, TimTrapolin gained momentum, sponsorbanners of distinction decorated thewrought iron fence near theMiniature Golf Course site. Manyrallied for the cause and helped scorea “Hole in Won” for City Park!

As we all know success breeds success and to date the Friends, working closely in conjunction withCity Park’s Capital Campaign, hassuccessfully raised funds for the firstphase of the project! An exciting feature of the project is that for adonation of $1,000 and above thedonor will be recognized on a per-manent plaque at the golf complex. In addition, $25,000 hole namingrights (for 10 years) equates to$2,500/year with 24/7 exposure to ahuge demographic market. That isless than the cost of some billboardsfor 1 month!! What a slam-dunk,natural choice and a wise marketingdecision!!

The night following“Lark in thePark”, Equest Farms hosted “Tails,But No Black Tie”, a premierequestrian event! This event is

unlike any other sports event held inNew Orleans!! If you missed it,please make plans to attend nextyear. It is such fun!

Upcoming Friends’ events include the Friends’ Fest on July 27,2011, and the ever popular MartiniMadness on Friday, September 16,2011. Ghosts in the Oaks in Octoberis also on tap!!

Dear FOCP Board Members & Volunteers,A very special thanks goes out to all of our board members and volunteers who

came together on Friday to put together a fantastic evening.Hats off to our three Lark chairmen, Joey, Leila & Mary, and all of their commit-

tees, whose tireless efforts resulted in a hugely successful event. We are extremelygrateful to all of our volunteers who came out that day to help with set-up, all of ourvolunteers who did all of the pick-ups from the restaurants and last but not least, all ofthose that worked that night at patron party, registration, ticket sales, will call, servers, runners, auction and more. We also extend a warm welcome to all of our new volun-teers that worked with us for the first time on Friday night. We are delighted to haveyou join our very loyal group of volunteers. We would also like to very speciallyacknowledge all of the Capital One employees who come out every year to assist usin so many ways. Without each one of you, it would be impossible to put on an eventof this size. We are extremely grateful for your continuous support of our FOCPevents and look forward to working with you again in the near future. Our very best to all,Suzette & Kathi
