The mission of Opportunities, Inc. is to provide developmental and support services which assist

individuals in attaining a full life in the community.

In 1965, Shirley and Leon Pesek welcomed a beautiful baby named Michael. With all of the hopes and dreams of new parents, the Peseks were soon stunned to learn that Michael had Down syndrome. For the next few weeks and months, Shirley and Leon searched for services in the Texarkana area. They found nothing other than institutional care, but this was not an option for the Peseks. In their frustration, Shirley and Leon found other families facing the same situation. Thesefirstfamiliesjoinedtogethertoformaspecialschoolforchildrenwhohaddevelopmentaldisabilities. In 1966, the Texarkana Special Education Kindergarten, later Opportunities, Inc., opened in space donated by the First Presbyterian Church. A Board of Directors was formed, and a familiar face was asked to serve as a charter member—Leon Pesek. Intheforty-fiveyearssincetheoriginalfamiliesjoinedtogether,Opportunitieshasseenmanychanges, from six children served to 845 children, adults, and elderly who were provided services in 2009-2010. Day services and residential living programs are provided, and therapies ensure that children are ready to enter public schools. Some things have not changed, though. Opportunities still focuses on our mission to assist individuals in attaining a full life in the community, and Shirley and Leon Pesek continue to play a vital role in making this happen. Since its creation, Leon has served on the Board of Directors, and Shirley is a charter member of the Opportunities Foundation Board. For the Peseks, it is a labor of love. After Michael’s death in 1977, Shirley and Leon made a commitment to look after “Michael’s friends at Opportunities.” The Peseks are a special part of Opportunities history, even as they work to ensure a strong future for children and adults who have developmental disabilities.

Lifetime of Opportunities DuringaRotaryClubmeetingin1974,LarryCopelandfirstheard about Opportunities and the services that were provided for children who had special needs. Larry and his wife, Mary, quickly realized that Opportunities was the right place for their daughter Lynley, and, at the age of 2 1/2, she began receiving

day services and therapies. Lynley transitioned to public schools, graduating from Pleasant Grove School High School, and in 1991, she returned to Opportunities. Mary and Larry Copeland are thankful for the services that Opportunities provides for Lynley: “She attends the day work training program, and she is happy in the residential setting where she learns to live with others in a safe, comfortable environment. This allows her to enjoy a full social life with other adults and to gain skills that make her more independent.”

Just like Lynley, Sundi was a young child when she began receiving services at Opportunities. She also transitioned to public school and returned to Opportunities as an adult. SundiwasoneofthefirstresidentsinHousingOpportunities,aresidentiallivingcomplexforadultswhohavedevelopmentaldisabilities.Asanonlychild,itwasdifficultforSundi’sparents to allow her to move into the Residential program, but they knew that it was the best thing for their daughter. Sundi’s mother, Mae, said that it is absolutely wonderful not having to worry about her and, “I know she will be well taken care of when I am no longer here.”

Sundi attends OpportunitiesWork Training program, where she earns a paycheck and learns jobskills.In her spare time, she loves to sing and participate in Opportunities’ Sounds of Joy choir.

Spring has sprung in the Wellness Trails! Withtreesblooming,andjonquilsdottingthe ground, the children and adults of Opportunities are using the Trails to develop healthy exercise habits and learn about the natural environment. Thanks to generous

donors and friend, outdoor artwork decorates the Trails, and pavilions offer a shaded place for rest. Building on the idea of fostering health and wellness, Opportunities is a proud participant in Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Blue and You Fitness

Challenge. With 123 members, the “Opportunities for Wellness” team is utilizing the Wellness Trails on the Main Campus and is working towards a healthier tomorrow!

This past Christmas, 134 children, adults and families had a brighter holiday thanks to those

who supported Opportunities’ Annual Adopt-a-Family program. Donors provided much-needed

clothing, food and gifts for these families and truly made a difference in their lives.

Opportunities provides daily services, including specialized instruction and preschool readiness activities, to children who have developmental delays and disabilities. Since 2002, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Texarkana has provided generous funding to ensure that all toddlers and preschoolers enrolled at Opportunities have access to technology. Touch-screen computer stations along with therapeutic software foster emergent literacy skills, enhance speech and occupational therapy goals, and enable children to learn important computer skills.
