Statement of Mission

The Baptist College of Florida shall operate within the context of a Christian worldview to promote, provide for, operate and control a program of education and training for ministers and other religious workers through awarding certificates and associate and baccalaureate degrees in a co-educational post secondary setting. To fulfill its mission, the college seeks to develop those qualities in students that contribute to effective ministry. In the area of personal growth, we seek to foster a desire for knowledge; develop cultural awareness by introducing students to a wide range of knowledge; nurture the ability to acquire, evaluate, assimilate, and use information; and promote personal and social maturity. For spiritual growth, we provide the resources for gaining biblical and religious data; we also assist students in learning and living the Christian life. In terms of professional growth, students are enabled to gain the credentials that enhance opportunities for ministry, and they learn to master a specialized body of knowledge. At the same time, we encourage positive attitudes toward ministry and foster both an awareness of and a loyalty to the Southern Baptist heritage.

From The President...

Dear Friends,

As I write to you, I am overcome with gratitude to our Lord for His many blessings. In the middle of a worldwide economic turmoil, our Lord has shown Himself to be faithful in providing for us. The total enrollment for the Spring 2009 Semester is great-er than the enrollment a year ago. We had thought that folks might be kept from enrolling due to financial concerns. While those con-cerns are very real, we are doing everything that is possible to make the highest quality, Christ-centered, Bible-based education available. Primarily we are depending on God to do that which is impossible for us, and He is doing just that on a daily basis. During the last few months we have completed construc-tion of the new Administration Building on the campus. We are still in the process of unpacking boxes and finding our way in the new surroundings. Truly we are blessed by having some expanded space and some extra offices. This has come due to the blessings of our Lord and the generosity of His people through special gifts. Work is continuing on new student housing units on campus. We are expecting to have completed construction on new or renovated apartments for five families as well as new bed spaces for 56 ad-ditional single students in time for the Fall 2009 Semester. We are also making progress on a new program of Missions Aviation with the signing of a twenty year lease for four acres of property at the Tri-County Airport near the campus. We were able to pay the entire twenty year lease in advance through a generous gift from one of our dear friends. With the recent commitment on the part of an-other friend, we are also making progress toward the construction of our new Center for Missions and Evangelism. Recently I was sharing the information in the paragraph with a pastor friend and he jokingly asked, “Don’t you know that we are in a recession?” The fact is that the world economy is in a recession, BUT our Lord is in neither recession nor depression! No one is about to foreclose on His riches. We have placed our hope and trust in Him alone. For years we have sung the song, Onward Christian Sol-diers. I know that some folks have long ago dropped this hymn from their services. It seems to me that the song is more relevant now than ever before. As I look at our students and our graduates,

ture is secure in the hands of our Unchanging Lord. As He stated through the Prophet Jeremiah, our Lord has a plan to bring us hope and a future. He has been faithful in the past. He is faithful in the present. And He will be faithful in the future.

I want to thank each individual who has been involved in the work of our Lord through The Baptist College of Florida during the last year. You have giv-en sacrificially during difficult times. Let me encour-age you to continue your support of this noble venture in the service of our Lord. I promise you that your support is appreciated, and it will be utilized with the highest order of Christian stewardship and manage-ment. I am looking forward to all that God plans for us as together we move into His great future.

God Bless You,

I am reminded that we have the great privilege of edu-cating and training the Christian soldiers who will lead in the fight for the truth of God’s word and the ministry of the church. As I look at our faculty, I am reminded of the 1,940 years of ministry represented within this group. We are blessed abundantly by having some of God’s choice servants serving at The Baptist College of Florida.

The theme of this edition of Echoes is “The Fu-ture in the Balance.” I hope that you will spend some time looking at the front cover of this issue and think about where we are as a denomination, as churches, and most importantly as individuals. Truly when we put the weight of the cares and concerns of the world on one side and the cross on the other side of the scales, the cross always outweighs any challenge.

As we deal with increasing challenges and de-creasing incomes we are concerned about balancing budgets and cash flows. These are real concerns that must be dealt with the highest standards of steward-ship. However, the greatest comfort and certainty dur-ing these troubling times is the knowledge that the fu-

training in missions as well as the practical training needed in flight, maintenance, and operation in “bush pilot” situations. The college has leased four acres of land adja-cent to the north end of the runway at the Tri-County Airport where Jackson, Hol-mes, and Washington Counties intersect. Plans are for the construction of a 10,000 square foot hangar with 5,000 square feet of office and classroom space.

According to Dr. Thomas A. Kinchen,

President of the College, “This provides us with the unique opportunity to devel-op new tools for taking the Gospel to all areas of our world. For many years we have been training excellent missionar-ies to go into most areas. Now we will be able to equip those who will be going into areas that have been unreachable. I could not be more excited about the prospects for the future of this program.”

Mission teaching and experience are at the heart of the program at The Baptist College of Florida. One of the strongest new pro-grams of study at the college is the B.A. in Missions. A critical need in the field of inter-national missions is that of transportation of personnel and equipment into outlying areas of the globe. Missions aviation has been a vital component of various denominations, as well as church groups without specific de-nominational identity. In recent years, many denominations have worked with organizations that specialize in missions aviation. This enables many groups to receive benefit from a rather small avia-tion fleet rather than running their own pro-grams. BCF has an ongoing program of send-ing current students on mission trips in the United States and around the world. Numer-ous alumni of the college serve in missions literally around the globe. On almost every continent there are people groups that could be reached with the Gospel of Christ if there was adequate transportation to their remote villages. It is just such groups that make the need for missions aviation so great. Recently, BCF established a program that will provide the highest quality of classroom

Education graduate, Bobbie Kern Dotson (‘00), recently earned her National Board Cer-tification which is the highest standard of evaluation of general knowledge in teaching methods, learning skills, and specialty ar-eas.

Christian Education graduate, Rod-ney Peavy (‘98) and his wife, Bev-erly, have dramatically changed the way a community relates by shar-ing their four adopted children; three bi-racial and one Caucasian.

Christian Education graduate, Drew Stallworth (‘06) and his wife, Jessica Stallworth (‘06) Missions gradu-ate were appointed IMB Missionaries for service in Central & Eastern Europe.

BCF is partnering with Snowbird Wil-derness Outfitters in North Carolina to offer college credit through the Outdoor Leadership and Discipleship (OLD) School beginning this fall. The program not only provides college credit, but also an adven-turous combination of skill-sets for outdoor leadership, theological training, and disci-pleship. Students can earn national certifi-cation in areas such as whitewater rafting, making the curriculum a tremendous asset to individuals interested in camp ministry and outdoor adventure exercises. BCF Di-rector of Distance Learning and Assistant Professor of Leadership, David Coggins, stated, “If students have interests in camp ministries, this would be an invaluable op-portunity to get training and college credit for it!” There is even a scheduled mission trip to an orphanage in Honduras included in the course activities. For more informa-tion contact 800.328.2660 ext. 482.

BCF to Offer “OLD School” Adventure

The BCF registered trademark “Changing the World Through the Unchanging Word®” defines the mission of preparing men and women for areas of service in a classroom, church, concert stage, mission field, and ex-ecutive boardroom. BCF students and alumni continue to make a difference in every aspect of ministry and service.

The building was filled, and crowds were standing outside of the open windows in Cururupu, Brazil, as thirty-eight students graduated from the Leadership Certificate Program offered through BCF. “I have participat-ed in many graduations,” stated BCF President Thomas A. Kinchen who traveled to Brazil to present the certificates, “but I have never seen so many who have worked so hard and accomplished so much in the face of almost overwhelming obstacles. I am both humbled and challenged by the spirit of these people.” The first graduating class represents a monumental accomplishment in the mission efforts in the Brazilian interior as students have been creden-tialed and equipped to plant churches and spread the gospel.
