Many of you know that Chimps Inc. and the International Primate Protection League (IPPL) are involved in a lawsuit regarding the custody of Emma and Jackson and twelve gibbons currently residing at the IPPL sanctuary in South Carolina. Th e federal lawsuit was fi led against Primarily Primates last year to ensure that the animals that were relocated to our sanctuaries would reside at their current homes indefi nitely. Th e month of March marks Emma and Jackson’s one year anniversary in their new home. Th roughout the year, Emma and Jackson have had the time to make family connections with other chimpanzees, overcome many of the psychological maladies that they arrived here with, regained confi dence and adopted proper captive chimpanzee mannerisms.

Issue 36 - Spring 2008

c 2008 Chimps Incorporated

Dear friends and valued supporters,We have had a few nice days since spring arrived, but not nearly enough. Our nights are still very cold. Th e crocuses and daff odils are poking their heads out of the dirt and will probably be beautiful by the time you receive this newsletter.

Once again, we are looking forward to another sell out crowd at our 8th annual Civil War Football fundraiser. Th e date for this year is set for Saturday, November 29, 2008. It is one of the rare times that Chimps Inc. opens its doors to the public and off ers a tour of the sanctuary. And it is a great opportunity to watch a fantastic game in our heated indoor arena. It is never too early to consider a sponsorship or donating an item to our silent auction. To join us this coming year, reserve a table, or learn more about this great fundraiser call us at 541.389.5853.

Th ere are no words for me to express how much I appreciate every one of Chimps Inc.’s members and supporters. One of my worst fears is being negligent in recognizing the benevolence of our devotees. Well, my worst fear came true when we mistakenly omitted some of our very dedicated Civil War Game supporters in our last quarterly newsletter. I humbly apologize and would like to take the time to recognize and thank: Believe In Angels, Lucinda and John Fournier, the Sunriver group, Prineville Power Sports, Peterson Machinery Co., Kettle Foods, Mountain Country, Bill Hollverstott, and Carol and Les Stiles. Th ank you so much for your years of support.

I am forever thankful for Paula Muellner’s dedication as Executive Director to the chimps and the sanctuary. She puts way over 100% of her energy, time and expertise to better the sanctuary. She is pivotal to our litigation with Primarily Primates. Paula spends many long hours on the phone and even more long hours on the computer. I would like to express my love and thanks to Paula for everything she has done to bring Chimps Inc. to a new level of excellence.

Don’t forget that we have our new data base up and running. Th e database is far superior to our past program and it allows us to better track our members and supporters. In view of that, if you have moved or changed any of your contact information please contact us so we can update your fi le. We are also planning our annual open house for our members, we have not chosen a date as of yet, but if you know of anyone that would like to meet the chimps and big cats and get a tour of the sanctuary please encourage them to become a member so they, too, can be invited.

Th ank you and have a wonderful Spring. Lesley Day

We would like to thank our dedicated volunteer, Brett Montage, for all of his hard work and dedication to the sanctuary. Brett is truly a “Jack of all trades” at the sanctuary; capable of landscaping, fi xing the irrigation, plumbing, and ensuring that all of the chimp doors are working accordingly, as well as creating novel enrichment for

the chimps and helping to clean the animal habitats. All of the chimps adore Brett, especially Topo, who seems to be particularly fond of him. Th e moment Topo sees Brett arrive he lets out a hoot and begins to playfully bob his head. He moves to the nearest doorway and eagerly waits for Brett to enter. Once Brett greets him Topo lets out a laugh and solicits a quick game of chase. Topo never seems to be too far from Brett, perhaps he is checking up on his handy-man work, but I think it is because he is waiting for another quick came of chase. Th is spring marks Brett’s one year anniversary at the sanctuary and we are looking forward to many more. Big pant hoots to Brett from all of the chimps and volunteers.

Th is quarter, Chimps Inc would like to recognize Brenda Hernandez for her outstanding commitment and dedication to the sanctuary. Brenda began volunteering in the spring of 2007, and since then has created some indissoluble bonds with the chimps. Princess Patti, Th iele and Maggie have offi cially renamed Sunday to “Glamour-day” because they know that Brenda will help beautify them with her shiny lip gloss. Herbie knows that he will get his exercise for the day because Brenda makes sure to run laps with him around the big outdoor enclosure. Brenda always goes above and beyond the call of volunteer duty; always staying longer to help out around the sanctuary or give a little extra attention to the chimps. We look forward to her big smiling face and fun-spirited personality. Th ank you for always going the extra mile.

My name is Heather Ross, I am a single mom of two extraordinary boys, Devon and Cody and a soon to be mother-in-law to Jesse. Th ough it seems to be a small family I also share my house with 32 special needs cats and a senior dog named Breezy. I began my own mission to rescue medically and physically disabled cats by providing them a lifelong home. I have always had a deep seeded love for animals with special needs and those that reside in captivity. Over the last 18 years I have worked with an array of animals. Prior to moving to Bend I worked with displaced, surplus, injured, and exotic animals in the High Desert of California. After moving to Central Oregon I worked as a veterinary technician with domestic animals. I am excited an honored to be continuing my work with animals at Chimps Inc. I look forward to growing with the organization and continuing to support conservation through education.

WELCOMING OUR NEW CARETAKER

One of the most amazing things about volunteering at Chimps Inc. is the chance to watch the two kids grow up. Like seeing a child’s fi rst steps, or being around when one fi rst learns to talk, we have the chance to witness fi rst hand Jackson and Emma take their “fi rst steps”. I was saying good morning to everybody

the other day and Emma playfully ran up to greet me. She sat on one of the ledges and gave a smile as usual, but this morning something was diff erent. She stared at a cut on my hand very intuitively and pointed at it. I gave her my hand and she most gently began to “groom” the cut on my hand. Now I’m used to this from the older chimps but I have never seen Emma do this before. It brings tears to my eyes to remember this now, especially since it took nearly a year for Emma to develop this vital social bonding behavior. It was a very powerful moment and one that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I know that through the teachings of the elder chimps in the family group, Emma had now learned how to groom and just what it really means to do so. We are so lucky to have a place like Chimps Inc. and I am so thankful to have the chance to volunteer there.

Chimps Inc. provides public outreach within our community through educational lectures and fundraisers.

Oh February 14, Valentines Day, a day of hearts, fl owers, snuggles and kisses. We were certainly not short on cupid arrows and love at the chimp house this year. It was evident that Herbie had his heart set on spending the day with Maggie, but Kimie refused to give up her main squeeze. When we realized that Herbie was trapped in a love triangle we knew we had to create a diversion. We swiftly pulled out all the heart printed goodie bags, pink and red colored enrichment toys, and sliced up strawberries to distract the girls. Luckily the plan worked, the chimps saw what we were up to and ran down from the second fl oor of the playhouse to see the delicious treats and fun toys. Kimie could barely contain her excitement; she desperately wanted

her pink tote bag. So, Kimie decided to sweet talk the caregivers by blowing us

kisses – it was the classic “batting of the eyes” scene from the romance movies. Jackson, too, found a new love – a little plush bear that was strapped up at the

top of the cage. He carried his new toy around with him all day; we never once saw one without the other.

All of the chimps took great delight in fi nding out the contents of their goodie bags, made up so generously by Helen Wallace, which were cheerios, red apples and pink stuff ed bears. Th e feelings behind times like Valentines Day are to appreciate the things and the people you care about. It gives all of us here, human and chimp, a chance to have some extra fun and make new memories. No doubt the chimps love their family, and there is no amount of goodie bags, treats, or special cakes that could account for how much we love the chimps!

Cupid Sneaks Down to the Chimp House

Th e chimps’ art will be featured this fall at the Umpqua Bank. Th e artists behind the unique paintings are our very own chimpanzee residents. Painting is just one of the varieties of enrichment activities we have to ensure the chimpanzees remain stimulated. Original artwork is painted on thick canvas, come unframed and will be purchasable. We will also be selling signed copies of the paintings for $50 each. Contact us to learn more about this rare opportunity.

On April 4, the chimps had their art début at the annual Spring Art Hop. Th e art was displayed at Pave Jewelers of Bend, Oregon.

John Voelzow, owner of Pave Jewelers sold his famous smoked salmon and donated all of the proceeds to Chimps Inc. We were able to bank $150. Th ank you John, Rod Kuehnast, Molly Espana and Ally Sexton for your support.

We would like to give a special thanks to Jenny Matthews and all of the woman at the Pilot Butte Retirement Center for the hard work you do on preparing our newsletters for the mail. Each quarter they fold and label all of our newsletters.

Big pant hoots to Allie Middleton, Maddie Dahl and Andie Miller from the Summit High School Roots and Shoots group. Every Saturday they pick up produce for the chimps and volunteer their time.

Th e chimps were overwhelmed with the novel enrichment, yummy treats, and great toys from the Tom McCall, Forest Grove and the UUYI Roots and Shoots groups located in Forest Grove, Oregon. Th ank you for your continued support.

Chimps Inc. would like to welcome Ginny Streeter as their new marketing coordinator. We are excited to have you as part of the team and look forward to working with you.

NEWS IN BRIEFS . . .

Th e Garden of Eatin’

It’s that time of year once again – gardening! Each year Chimps Inc. tills, builds and plants its very own organic garden for the chimpanzees. It just so happens to be Topo’s, as well as everyone else’s, most favorite thing to watch their caretakers do. In addition to the organic garden we plant scores of wildfl owers and edible fl ora around their enclosures, both for their viewing pleasure and their bellies. But we can’t do all of this landscaping and gardening without a little help from you. Th is quarter’s wish list is overfl owing with spring time gear. Chimps Inc. is in need of small hand shovels, gardening gloves, hand held pruners, vegetable seeds (of all types of produce), marigold seeds, pansy plants, rose bushes, trees and much much more, the list is endless. Visit our website for a more comprehensive wish list.

PAGE 9

One of Herbie’s unique personality traits is that he loves to be the center of attention, and would be content if all of his caretakers focused solely on him. One can only imagine how excited he was when March 26th actually was all about him, as we celebrated his twenty second birthday! Th e staff and volunteers started preparing for the party early. Th ey garnished the cages with colorful streamers and tissue paper and littered oodles of presents and toys around the enclosures. Th is year’s toys were unlike any before, in both quality and quantity. Tyler Rambo of R.A. Long High School in Longview, Washington had his Mrs. Navarro’s Senior science class put together an enrichment drive for Chimps Inc. Th ey

collected some of the most fun and unique toys. Amongst Herbie’s favorite new presents was an oversized dump truck,

which he pushed around on the fl oor, and a vibrant colored push-carousel, which he made spin by plunging it against his chest.

We polished off the day by singing happy birthday around a homemade monkey

chow cake. Herbie is exceptionally gleeful when he sees candles on the cake because he tests himself as to how many candles he can blow out at once. Although he was only able to blow out two, he acted as if extinguished all of them. He ran off hooting to the entire chimp family what he just did. Happy Birthday Herbie, and many more to come!

Birthday Boy, Herbie, turns 22!

Every quarter, Chimps Inc. honors a business in our community that provides vital support for our sanctuary. Big pant hoots to our friends at Kettle Brand for their kindness and generous support through the years.

With an eye on the future, Chimps Inc. is working on building a healthy endowment fund to protect the sanctuary’s long-term stability. An endowment fund serves as an investment in the future, providing ongoing fi nancial security to enable Chimps Inc. to continue its mission of chimpanzee conservation. We invite those who want to secure the vitality of the chimps, big cats and the sanctuary in perpetuity to join us by remembering us in you wills.

Th anks to the forethought of many of our departed supporters, Chimps Inc. has been able to accomplish many wonderful things to improve the lives of the animals we cherish. I hope that you will consider including Chimps Inc. in your estate plans. Please contact us at Chimps Inc., PO Box 6973, Bend, OR 97701 or call us at 541.330.8159 if you would like to discuss providing lifelong help for Chimps Inc.

Th ank you for ensuring the futures generations will have the opportunity to know and love the animals that we protect.

One morning I was cleaning up some of my used up shampoo and moisturizer bottles. Before I went to recycle them I looked at them and thought “perhaps the chimps could fi nd some enrichment in these?” Now, the bottles that I had were those oversized, push-down-squirt-tops, and there happens to be a little bit of moisturizer at the bottom. I added a little extra

water and brought them to the chimp house. Jackson had seen me passing them through the feed door and he ran over to scoop them up. Well, Jackson had a ball. He started pushing down on the top of the bottle squirting

out the contents inside and rubbing it all across his feet and in-between his toes. He made sure to massage every nook and cranny. He seemed to know exactly what to with it, almost as if he had done it before. Jackson was very happy to have the lotion and we will have to give him some for enrichment every now and then.

Spring means green and with that, new things are happening. Th e trees are just beginning to leaf, tulip foliage is emerging from the ground, and grass is sprouting up all over the yard, as well as along the country roads. In the spirit of the season, Chimps Inc. rustled up a few extra hues of green – but this is a little more than just the color:

Green your spring cleaning. Using simple ingredients such as baking soda, soap, and vinegar, you can make cheap, easy, and non-toxic cleaning products that really work! Save money, time, and your indoor air quality

Make your green thumb even greener! Compost your food scraps. Composting reduces the amount of waste you send to the landfi ll. In the process, you create free, healthy fertilizer for your garden

Make it a habit to turn off the lights when you are leaving any room for 15 minutes or more and utilize natural light when you can

Recycle your cell phones, ink cartridges and toners -support Chimps Inc. and stop deforestation. To learn more about this recycling program contact us at 541-330-8159 or visit our website at www.chimps-inc.org

When shopping for your greens use a reusable “green” grocery bag. Each year, Americans throw away some 100 billion polyethylene plastic bags. Reduce your plastic bags and reduce global warming

So this spring season make sure to enjoy the sea of colors across landscapes and to stop and smell the fl owers. Feel the earth on your bare feet and don’t be afraid to get a little dirty in the garden. But make this new spring season a little greener by becoming a little more earth-friendly.

Show your mom and dad how much you appreciate all she and he have done for you with a symbolic animal adoption in their name! All of the residents at Chimps Inc. have come to the sanctuary after years in the entertainment industry, private sector, or in sub-standard living conditions. Each story is diff erent and many are heart-breaking, but in every case there is a common thread: a sentient being that deserves a second chance at life and a permanent, loving sanctuary. By adopting a resident you are helping us provide spacious indoor/outdoor enclosures, connections to “family” groups, and fresh and natural foods in a peaceful home.

For a donation of $50 you will receive a beautiful adoption package on the particular individual, complete with an informative biography, personalized adoption certifi cate, glossy photograph, and packet of greeting cards with drawings of our chimps, and a one year subscription to our newsletter. For a limited time you can receive a copy of one of our chimps unique paintings, for an additional $25.

Adopt Topo - After about twenty years of adjusting to numerous residences, dwelling in small, windowless cages in roadside zoos, and working in the entertainment industry, Topo became our fi rst resident in 1995. Topo, has since reigned as the alpha male

Adopt Patti - Patti became the second member of our sanctuary. Raised by humans, Patti performed tirelessly for Marine World for 14 years before she became too unpredictable to have around the public

Adopt Herbie- We found Herbie living as a pet in a small shack made with chicken wire, and brought him to Chimps Inc. in 1998. Today, Herbie has plenty of space to swagger around proudly
