    PCHS LIBRARIAN KATHLEEN GRIMSHAW-HAVEN

    IS ALSO A GENEALOGIST

Having been born in Paterson and raised in Clifton, I’vealways been interested in local history, so I was very excitedwhen I learned the Historical Society was looking for a librarian.I used the library here years ago to do my own genealogicalresearch, and I actually did some work here as a Rutgers graduatestudent back in 1996. After getting my Masters in

Library Services from Rutgers, Iworked as the Head of InformationServices at Exxon and then movedon to become a Knowledge Analystfor Novartis Pharmaceuticals. I wasa part-time reference librarian atRamapo College and currently apart-time reference librarian atWilliam Paterson Universitywhere I’ve been since 1986. I continue to do my own

genealogical research, staying upto date by attending various genealogical seminars, and I’malways on the look-out for a new Web resource. My hope isto organize our library and archival materials in a way that willmake them more accessible and easier to use for both genealogistsand local historians.

Guest Speakers at our April Meeting, Charles Eckhardt, in CivilWar Uniform and Bob MacAvoy presented “Our Brothers GoneBefore”, New Jerseys Civil War Veterans.

Architectural Historian, Clifford Zink, presented “Dutch BuildingTraditions in New Jersey” at our March meeting.

From time to time I had written for various types vitalrecords from about 1848 through 1878 and received copies ofledger-style pages. As only one person on the page was ofinterest to me, the others were forgotten. Later, I realized theseother entries may be useful to other researchers, and I wentback to start transcribing them. Many of these entries did not

have a great citation and were not always a legible copy (otherthan the names that pertained to me), but I have tried to clarifythe names on the documents.Perhaps (hopefully) this will inspire others to transcribe the

records they have in their notes.

Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased formermilitary members may now request copies of military personnelrecords online from the National Personnel Records Center. The new Web-based application was designed to provide bet-

ter service on these requests by eliminating records mailroomprocessing time. Also, because the requester will be asked tosupply all information essential for NPRC to process therequest, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask

veterans for additional information will be minimized.Veterans and next of kin (a surviving spouse that has not

remarried, father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother) mayaccess the application at http://vetrecs.archives.gov.
