W e also have two courses a imed atyounger writers: The Furnace, a blazin' performance poetry infernoand Muso Journo a practical introduction to music journalism.A number of exciting developments have taken place at Spread theW o r d recently, including the m ove to new prem ises. W e are nowbased on Lambeth W alk, not far f rom the South Bank and Water looStation (see m ap at the back of broc hure). We have a ded icatedworkshop space which is already enabling us to offer a widernumber o f opportunities to you, including our new writing group:Tricks of the Trade. Spread the W ord's staff team has alsoexpanded and we welcome Jenneba Jalloh as Education Officerand Nick Murza as A dm inistrator.Education initiatives this season include an oral history projectfocusing on the lives of m en who arrived in London's LadbrokeG r o v e from W est Africa and the W est Indies in the late 1940s; thereis also an after school creative writing project with fifteen youngpeople from Brent's Looked After Children's Unit.Turn to the back o f the broc hure to f ind out m ore about Spread theWord's other initiatives such as The Literature List.Y o u may notice that un-tongue-tied, a semi-staged reading f romtwo highly acclaimed poets and their poet-translators l isted in ourspring/summ er brochure, features again this seas on.     Spread the Word 's ne w writing group offers experienced writers theopportunity to read and give critical feedback o n each other'sfiction. The aim is for writers to advance their work to its finalstages of developme nt in a supportive and friendly group.     Exploring writing about travelWhat d o e s it mean to write about a place when you are just avisitor? What are the boundaries between travel journalism an dtravel writing?Travel writing is an increasingly popular genre, which canencompass techniques m ore commonly assoc iated with writingf ict ion, serious non-fiction an d even poetry. This two day intensiveworkshop wil l give writers the opportunity to think about thedemands an d opportunities of writing travel literature. For thepurposes of the workshop the techniques of travel literature wil l b eapplied to more familiar landscapes. W e wil l also consider how ourperceptions change when we leav e familiar places and enterunfamiliar ones.A n introduction to the genre wil l be fo l lowed by exam ples o fdifferent kinds o f travel writing an d dedicated exercises which willask participants to consider a variety of approaches to travelwriting. Th e afternoon sessions wil l be spent in assisted writing,where participants wil l have the opportunity to get direct feedbacko n their work.Tutor: Jean McNeilJean McNeil is originally from Nova Scotia, Canada, and has l ivedin London since 1991.     In this semi-staged reading two highly acclaimed poets, on ewriting in Persian and the other in Russian, both sharing th espoken Azeri language and cultural h eritage, perform togetherfo r th e first t ime with their English poet-translatorsAzerbaijan wa s divided in two at the end of the Russo-Persian wa rin 1828. Born either side of the A r a z R i v e r and the border betweenIran an d what was the U S S R , these tw o young women no w findthemselves outside the land of their birth, in London, writing in theirmother tongue an d also working with poets here to see their worktranslated into English.T h e s e poets deal with the grand themes of love, anguish, home anddisplacement with a tender strength that at once pays homage totheir poetic traditions and at the same t ime is totally fresh.Poets: Negar Hasan-Zadeh, Ziba KarbassiP o e t Translators: Richard McKane, Stephen WattsDramaturg: Caroline BergvallCaroline Bergvall is a poet and a performanceartist. She has recentlyedited the P e r f o r m a n c e R esea rch issue onT r a n s l a t i o n s (Summer 2002).Negar Hasan -Zadeh wa s born in 1975 in Bakuin what was the U S S R Republic of Azerbaijan. Shepublished her f i rst collection of poetry in Russian in2000 and in 2001 became the youngest member ofAzerbaijan Union o f Writers. H e r book O n th e W i n g s O v e r th eH o r i z o n (which has been translated into English by RichardM c K a n e ) was awarded the National Public P r i z e as the bestpoetry book of 2001 by the National Academ y of Azerbaijan.H e r latest Russian collection Tw o S u n s wa s published in March2003. Her poems have been published in Russia, Germ any,Australia and the UK.Ziba Karbassi was born in Tabriz, northwestern Iran. She and herfamily w ere force d to leave their country in the mid-1980's an dcame to Britain as political refugees. In exile sh e quickly becamerecognised as one of the forem ost young Iranian poets. For f ivey e a r s she has been the youngest member of the Iranian Write rsAss ociation in Exile. Her four books (in Persian) are S c o r p io n U n d e rT h e Pil low (1996), W i t h A Brok en S t a r In M y H ear t (1998), T h e S e aW i l l D r o w n (1999) & J izzz (2002). S he has read and been translatedinternationally and is a me m ber of Iranian PEN.Richard McKane is a poet, translator and interpreter. Origami is the art of paper folding.Through readings, group discussion, a ginko - a haiku walk - a n dlive demonstrations, this one-day workshop will introduceparticipants to the art of making haiku and origami and show howthe two can be combined to create visually striking objects.Participants are welcome to br ing haiku poe ms they have alreadywritten for feedback as wel l as paper they would l ike to use tocreate or igami ob jects.Spread the W ord will provide al l art materials whe re nece ssary.Tutors: Paul Conn eally and Miki MiyaraPaul Conneally is a haiku poet, artist and Education & RegionalDirector of the World Haiku Club.
