H ey Fam! I trust everyone has been
doing well and that you have all
been cruising through this first half of the
year!
Spread Luv has had an exciting first few
months of 2014. Hopefully you have all
been able to catch the release of our FNB
ad? The ad features the team at a Career
Day last December with the amazing
youth of New Breed Generation. It was a
super exciting day where we were all
happily followed around and interviewed
by Volcano’s production crew. The ad
has shed some light on our work and
we’ve been getting all kinds of luv from
South Africans from all walks of life. A
huge thank you to FNB, Volcano, New
Breed Generation and our fantastic
volunteers who joined us on the day! In

Next on behalf of the entire team, a warm
welcome to our new Marketing Director,
Mpho Mono! Mpho is a professional
marketing manager with Adams and
Adams attorneys and several years of
experience in marketing. We are lucky to
have Mpho graciously volunteering her
time to help Spread Luv grow from
strength to strength! In addition to this,
Lee-Anne Cobus, a seasoned Spread Luv
Director and engineer by profession, has
moved into management of our financial
portfolio. Welcome to your new gig Lee!
This year, Spread Luv also began an
exciting partnership with Wits Roteract, a
student based organisation that does
volunteer work all over the city. Roteract
members will volunteer at all of our
events and assist us with some new
projects going forward. Welcome to the
fam team Roteract!
Recently we had a fantastic career day at
Mncube Secondary School in Soweto.
What made the day all the more special is
a fantastic donation received from Marcia
Love. Love donated four boxes of books
to our learners! We thank Marcia for her
amazing generosity and hope that this

Featured Career Day - Memezelo Secondary School
On January 2014, Career Day was held at Memezelo Secondary School in Soshanguve and in conjunction with the good people of Alexander Forbes. The
day started bright and early with the team hopping on the Gautrain to head to Pretoria. From there Alexander Forbes organized transport for us to get to the
school. We had an army of volunteers from Forbes to take the learners through their financial paces. Other than that we had lawyers, doctors, engineers,
accountants and more, all guiding the goals of a very enthusiastic group of learners. It was a perfect summer Career Day, check out all the awesome
pictures below!
This is a new addition to our newsletter where volunteers can tell us a little about their experience at Career Day. Refentse
Mokale, a chemical engineer from Sasol, joined us at Mncube Secondary School and this is what she had to say
“We had a fun time with the learners and I myself learnt some things I didn’t know before then. The session made
me notice the amount of information the learners still lacked and the gaps they still needed to fill. I believe that the
information the learners got from us was adequate for them to start making decisions and taking actions (in terms of
bursary and varsity applications) with regards to the career paths they had chosen for themselves, although they still needed
to make more research of their own. They now know a little more about other career opportunities and can therefore make
better choices. Many of them seemed enthusiastic and very much excited about their future.
I’m thankful for the opportunity to be able to impart my knowledge to the learners and I would most definitely do it again.”

The Spread Luv Movement is a growing, dynamic non-profit
organization focused on providing effective career guidance to
learners with limited resources.
A desire for outreach and social upliftment led a group of young
women into different outreach campaigns and eventually to the
Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre to host an early
Christmas party for the children who lived there. During this visit
we met and spoke to several of the older learners and realized that
many of them lacked information and hope to better themselves.
Passion combined with desire to do better saw the beginning of the
career guidance focus of the Spread Luv Movement.

There are approximately 2.1 million young women between the ages of 12 and 18 living below the poverty line in South Africa. As is to be expected, these
young women fall in with the vast majority of our nation's youth whose quality of education is frequently negatively impacted by the lack of infrastructure
and economic resources in the townships and rural areas in which they live. Of late, there have been reports of another disadvantage, suffered only by these young women, that further threatens both their right to education and basic human dignity- menstrual health and sanitation.
As is the case in most Sub-Saharan African countries, menstrual hygiene remains a taboo in most parts of rural South Africa. The abject poverty under which these regions subsist also results in households only spending money on basic necessities which normally do not include menstrual sanitation
products. Due to the high cost of sanitary towels, young women often resort to using rags, old clothes, newspapers or leaves as an alternative which can
often be detrimental to their reproductive health. More often than not, at the risk of soiling themselves in public, these young women stay home during their menstrual cycles which means they miss approximately a week of school every month.
Happy Days Pads is an organization that was founded by Brand Strategist and Social Entrepreneur, Ramona Kasavan to combat the high level of school absenteeism due to menstrual health and sanitation issues. The organization not only hands out sanitary pads to young women in townships and rural areas
but also seeks to educate them about female reproductive health through open dialogue. Happy Days has mentors who teach young women about intimate
female issues such as menstruation, HIV and sexual orientation. These mentors also encourage young women to understand their bodies and break menstrual process taboos. It is within the core values of Happy Days Pads that seek to instill a sense of empowerment amongst young women about their
femininity, confidence and self-esteem that makes Happy Days an Organization We Luv! (Click here and find out more on their website).
